The above trailer for the PS3-exclusiveStar Ocean IV was ensconced in the Japanese release of Star Ocean: The First Departure – a remake of the original Star Oceanfor PSP. The internet, being what it is, collectively willed the bits to fly from their UMD-prison and manifest themselves on YouTube of all places, where the entire world could enjoy them. Before the 360 owners worry they won't be enjoying the title, remember developer Tri-Ace is working on the awkwardly titled Xbox 360 exclusive Infinite Undiscovery. So everyone's happy, right?
My problem is that I am currently sans PS2. I have a DS and a Wii (And my PC). The selection is a little more lacking there. There are some, I know. I am pretty excited about FFIV.
Any recommendations anyone have for me, given my current systems?
Only in the JRPG category. There is no way you can say the 360 gets no name games in GENERAL. And the lack of good JRPG's all about the system's lack of popularity in Japan.
But the 360 is loaded with excellent A-list titles - just not in the role playing department. There are a few good ones (Mass Effect, Blue Dragon) but not many traditional JRPG's.
Honestly I found that good though. I'm tired of playing the next Final Fantasy(and it seems that that's what squeenix is planning to fill the ps3) so it's nice that 360 users are getting something new.
Yes, I meant in Japan. It just seems that companies like SE are just handing out "what-lefts." They released some no-name space shooter before and they released the 3yr old FFXI on the shiney new hardware.
Silpheed is NOT a no name shooter. From Sega CD to 360, Silpheed is a series with a devout fanbase. This is like saying Konami put that no name Gradius game on PSP.
The 360 is getting Last Remnant. That is a huge game from Square. Also, they had Eternal Sonata firtsest. Now the games actually selling is a whole different story.
If Konami brought that stateside, people would explode. I mean, seriously. You're talking the cost of the system plus game and a few more thrown in for the same price as just a copy of Suikoden II on Ebay.
Pff, I didn't say anything about FF12. I hated FF12, it was just an offline MMO. Have you noticed at all they have these CGI videos for FFVII? And even a movie?! Gee... who would've thought they'd make more than 1 game that utilizes CG animation..
Because Blue Dragon, Trusty Bell (Eterna Sonata), and Enchanted Arms had those developers fucking ROLLING in the dough for putting them on 360, right?
Look, it's simple. 360 isn't a good place for JRPGs. They've been trying. Don't even say they haven't. But I mean a game developed by JRPG's holy trinity (Toriyama, Sakaguchi, Uematsu) couldn't make a scratch for fucks sake. You have a dream team which hasn't been united since Chrono Trigger and Blue Dragon was a failure. PS3 has actually proven itself viable for the Japanese focused games as Dynasty Warriors 6 and Gundam Musuo have both done well. Few JRPGs have dropped on PS3 so far but those that have have performed moderately well. So considering Star Ocean's appeal in Japan with a cult following in the US, does this announcement truly blow your mind?
interesting, we just had a Japanese developer talk about how Japanese game development is behind the times and dated and here we have another jrpg that looks like every other jrpg.
You are soo correct....but then again....the bottomline is money. It does shock me that new and original games or "a breath of fresh air" are really struggling in Japan.
GODHAND, OKAMI, KATAMARI DAMACY to name a few......
Wow, so every JRPG has space colonies? And OH NOES! DIS GAMES HAS GRAFX LIEK STAB OCIONS GAMES BEFOES!
Seriously. Let me see if I got this straight.
You're bashing this game based on a very early trailer in which we see a space colony (very common in Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest... been done before!) and a couple characters that look like they belong in a Star Ocean game (note to haters: deviate from fanbase expectations, lose fanbase. Simple math) overseeing a huge valley from a temple.
Well, I don't know about you but I think they should stop development right now. I mean, next thing you know, they'll be making a dystopian future FPS or a WWII inspired game. And that cuts directly into western developers pools of unoriginality.
did I say the game sucked or was going to suck, for what it is? Did I say it looked like garbage? No, I did not. You see, that is bashing.
What I did was question the purpose and creativity of yet another sci-fi fantasy jrpg with characters that all look like like they're 12 year old doe-eyed boys. Hey, I know that's the "japanese style" and "that's what they expect", but it doesn't mean it's not played out to hell and back. Japanese game development is for the large part, in a big rut and it's my opinion that crap like this is why.
Can you honestly tell me that you think this game is going to bring something revolutionary to the table or will it simply be another epic story game for fans of that genre, ie, a cash in game? answer honestly.
I don't see how creating a game for fans of a genre = cash in game. As for whether or not it will bring something revolutionary to the table, no, I don't. But why is that a bad thing? After all, if I go into a theatre to see a Pixar film and the entire thing is live action, I'd feel ripped off. Just as the people who are going to buy this game are not buying it because it's the most revolutionary game in existance. They will buy it because it's Star Ocean... 4.
I mean, if we're going to jump down the whole West vs. East development arguement... AGAIN... show me where the West is breaking boundaries at every possible point. You entire arguement is that Eastern developers lack a innovation and you're basing this arguement on a series which has been established since Super Famicom.
Now if we were discussing White Knight Story, Eterna Sonata, or even Heroes of Mana, we could have a discussion on "mixing things up." Or even if we escape the JRPG genre which has their own cliches, we can look at other eastern deved unique titles.
Have you played the Star Ocean games? they DO NOT feel like your typical JRPG...
"did I say the game sucked or was going to suck, for what it is? Did I say it looked like garbage? No, I did not. You see, that is bashing."
I don't usually comment this way, but its upsetting when someone just bashes another country/culture...
you might have not used those exact words, but guess what? your comment does imply, although indirectly, that the game will suck.
Once again, Japanese developers (and in a way the Europeans too) are more advance, and in a way, tend to think most of the time outside the box, unlike the US developers...
And for the record, none of the Star Ocean's have felt like "cash in", I seriously feel that almost everygame brings something new to the table, so to bash a game, because its not on your console of choice, or because its from a country that you aren't from is simply idiotic...
PS: EVEN KANE AND LYNCH BROUGTH SOMETHING NEW FOR GODS SAKE!
Japanese culture makes me love Okami, Katamari, and Ouendan/EBA. I like anime, I read a wee bit of manga, and I think it's a unique and kind of fun experience to get on a train where during rush hour hired men come along and push people in the doors, so that if your hands are in your pockets you can't get them out until the next stop.
But it does not make me critical of Japanese culture to point out that in the realms of art direction and game mechanics, JRPGs seem to have remained more stagnant than most other games.
Hello. There seems to be a problem with the article. According to tri-ace, there is no announced platform: http://www.tri-ace.co.jp/en/product/index.html . I believe next-gen is wrong.
I wouldn`t say for certain that it *isn`t* an exclusive... However, at this point, there is pretty much NOTHING in Japanese on the web that implies any exclusivity. In fact, nothing that points to either console, really. Tri-Ace developers have been quoted as much preferring the 360.
I`m not about to put my faith in one English site with no confirmed sources. Sure, they could be right, but if they are I`m willing to bet it`s luck. Being as Star Ocean does sell so much outside of Japan, it would actually make more sense for them to release it on the more world-pervasive 360.

Very pretty. I haven't played a good JRPG in too long.

Essentially 360 get the no-name games.
The architecture at the end is reminiscence of the Infinite Undiscovery trailer.

So is the PSP remake coming to the US?
I'm sick of all of these good JRPGs out on the PSP in Japan but not in America (Star Ocean remakes, Tales remakes, Breath of Fire, etc)

That next-gen article was NEVER verified ands the only supposed statement of a console for the game.
