Nokia delays N-Gage service ... again

Nokia's new N-Gage-as-gaming-platform concept was originally supposed to blow our minds in September ... and then November ... and then December ... and now – according to a Reuters report published today – it will be delayed into "early 2008" due to "delays in software testing." Nokia spokesperson Karen Tuutti explained, "We found one more issue which had to be solved before we could open the service." We presume that would be the issue of convincing gamers to pay any attention to the now comically delayed service.

You just can't help it can you? lol I just sold my year old Wii and bought a brand spankin' new PS3! I'm lovin' it, maybe it's not better than the Xbox 360 but it's pretty damn good.

Note: If you like the Wii, go ahead. I personally don't like it, but that's what opinions are for.

I'm buying a PS3 sooner of later but not before MGS4 and when it gets better exclusives.

I found nothing of interest on the Wii. I got the PS3 for 320, Brand New. I play resistance on it, good enough for me. I sold the Wii for 350.

I don't understand how a company convinces itself that something like this is a good idea. Is (was) there any way that they could ever turn a profit with a business plan like this? I mean, it boggles the mind. I don't understand how anyone was able to get enough people to buy into an idea like this, especially when a nearly identical service fell flat on it's face, BY THE SAME COMPANY!

Actually it wasn't a service, it was a device. And yes it was horribly pathetic.

But this is the first unified mobile platform for games in the US and I'm fairly confident this will turn out much better than former methods.

Nokia has sunk way too much money into this already. They pretty much have to finish and sell it to recoup some of the losses. There will be a few people foolish enough to buy this thing, so why not bank on it?

Despite delays, I'm still pretty excited for this. This is the first major step for mobile gaming in the US and, over time, could rival Japanese mobile gaming.

Mobile gaming works in Japan since the area of coverage is the whole country. It's hard for coverage of even the largest cities in the US. Also the phones in Japan are much more capable in graphics and battery life.

Which is why I think the N-Gage platform will be a catalyst for improving mobile gaming and maybe even the way cell phones are manufactured.

N-gage won't take off in the US, if for no other reason than Nokia phones in general don't do very well here. They have maybe a 10% market share, and that's mostly on low end phones.

No, the only way mobile gaming will take off in the US is if either A: there is a gaming platform across all major phone manufacturers and a game download store available on all carriers; or B: Either Nintendo or Sony makes a phone that can play existing DS or PSP games. By that I mean that the cartridges/UMDs fit into the phone or can somehow download their content onto the phones internal memory.

Of the above scenarios, the most likely is that Nintendo will make a DS phone that can accept DS cartridges. I will put the probability at 5%.

Why the fuck do we want mobile gaming to be successful? Do we want Valve, ID, Epic, and other talented American devs to start focusing on cell-phone games like frigging Square-Enix is?

i'm with jeff here

i use my cell phone for calls when i'm out and about. the people who need more complex devices like blackberries for business are generally too busy using it for business to game (my dad included)

Well you have to look at mobile gaming like portable gaming. The best portable games are ones you can play in short sessions and for businessmen and women that's exactly what they need to kill some time.

We want mobile gaming to broaden the casual market and to create new jobs for the game development industry.

But back to the point, if you believe that those American devs are really all that good, then you should be able to enjoy their games regardless of the platform.

Seems like you never had to wait for your next flight to X city for a conference, with nothing to do on your hands but wait... as a businessman.

Mobile gaming is popular because it really is gaming on the go: you bring your cell phone everywhere, but not necessarily your portable console (unless you have extra pocket space and aren't too afraid to attract attention from curious strangers).

It's a normal step to technological convergence. Gaming is not really defined by how powerful your machine is, but by how entertaining the product.
