Devil May Cry 4 opening cinematic is very cinematic indeed
We've been impressed by the footage we've seen of Capcom's newest demon slaughtering simulator, Devil May Cry 4. It has all the elements we've come to expect from the DMC series: acrobatics, dismemberment, and extreme cases of early-onset leukotrichia. However, after paying attention to the jaw-droppingly beautiful opening cinematic for the game, we are left with one major question: What is Nero listening to on those headphones? Sure, high octane techno-rock is a pretty safe bet, but we guess it's possible that our crimson clad protagonist can't juggle baddies unless he listens to ABBA. Guess we'll find out when the game hits U.S. store shelves in February '08.

Why so final-fantasy like?
I was almost expecting ultros to be in the opera house.
Obie @ Dec 29th 2007 5:20PM
Nero? I thought the protagonist was called Dante?
Maybe I should shut my yap and actually played any of the DMC games?
brandon_r87 @ Dec 29th 2007 6:00PM
I haven't played any DMC games either, but I think you are right that the older games were Dante. DMC4 switches main characters to Nero though.
Dombay @ Dec 29th 2007 5:22PM
God, don't you just hate it when monsters attack on your way to a show?
sully @ Dec 29th 2007 5:25PM
You would think, if he was in a hurry and could jump 40 feet in the air like that, he'd just use rooftops and get there a whole lot quicker. Avoid the bad guys too.
ThornedVenom @ Dec 29th 2007 6:18PM
It's not because you can kick ass that it grants you permission to trespass on private property. ;)
hvnlysoldr @ Dec 29th 2007 8:13PM
And let the monsters crash the show?
I hate females, They smell bad @ Dec 29th 2007 5:38PM
I hate the internet sometimes!
What's the point in buying the game, when everything is going to be shown to you before the game is even released!
An I already know what people are going to say, "Then don't watch it" "Simple right" "You stupid idiot"
The element of surprise is gone in videogames.
sinergy @ Dec 29th 2007 5:42PM
I came here to say the same thing. I refuse to watch this vid!! ;p
brandon_r87 @ Dec 29th 2007 6:06PM
Then don't watch it you stupid idiot. Simple, right?

!!!!!OMG SPOILER!!!!!
Bu, but nothing really happened.....
elmersglue @ Dec 29th 2007 7:15PM
I'm pretty sure this is a video that even Capcom could care less if you saw. They'd actually want you to see it because it gives absolutely nothing away and it looks pretty. Stop bitching, how often do you see a game video on the internet that spoils a game for you? It's just the intro...
ShortFuse @ Dec 29th 2007 10:16PM

games are $60 a pop now. i dont mind ruining the surprise of the VERY beginning of a game to make sure my money is well spent. simple, right?

Sounds like you need to learn some self control. When there is a game/movie/tv-series that I really want to enjoy, I do everything I can to make sure I don't read about it or watch trailers/preivews. The content is shown to help draw in new people, so if you already know you want to buy it, I'd stay clear of it.
Kokos @ Dec 31st 2007 2:52AM
I'm happy I can see it now, so when I get the game I can skip it.
playwhutyalike (hates games lists) @ Dec 29th 2007 5:40PM
Will our protagonist get with the singing opera tranny? Tune in to find out. Same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel.
Rob Accomando @ Dec 29th 2007 5:44PM
yeah, she needed some lipstick maybe.
Obie @ Dec 29th 2007 5:53PM
Lol, I didn't notice she was a girl till I saw the bewbs. They need to take some notes from Namco how to render some CGI chicks.
Brian Fantana @ Dec 29th 2007 5:47PM
The chick did kind of look like a dude. Strange, considering everyone usually looks like a chick. And why do Japanese developers use shitty music in all there games?
jackbauer @ Dec 29th 2007 6:00PM

"Jaw-droppingly beautiful opening cinematic.."
?????
The models look like they're in cinematic ps1 games, ff quality. I mean come on, the girl looked like a 7 foot man.
mr nimblewick @ Dec 29th 2007 7:46PM
Wasn't it in-game? Still, I expect more out of te 360 and PS3.
kevinski @ Dec 30th 2007 8:12AM
I was actually pretty surprised by this cinematic. In-game or not, the character models are pretty horrible when you consider the consoles that this game is being released on. And the hair just looks embarrassing. How can developers still not know how to render convincing hair in games? This just looks amateurish by today's standards.
And that woman singing looks kinda...mannish.
ThornedVenom @ Dec 29th 2007 6:21PM
The opera was too uncanny-valley for me: it did not look like she was really singing that.
The fighting animation was gorgeous though, with the giant sword flinging and all. Heck, the whole intro concept is cliché nice. But the eyebrow/facial animation towards the end troubled me. =/
Am I the only one in this situation?
Phi Nguyen @ Dec 30th 2007 2:02AM
I felt the same way. As a singer myself, I felt a strange disconnect with the video. The audio is off ever so slightly and the 3d model is not moving at all for little things like breaths and articulations. It's like she (he?) is just mouthing the words out ala Ashlee Simpson. Yeah... I went there.
Phi ^_^
Platy @ Dec 29th 2007 6:22PM
yay !
more developers should learn with lucarsarts and do cool efects to their logos !
capcom is learning =D
bigsofty @ Dec 29th 2007 6:29PM
Getting kinda sick of fancy pre-rendered animation like this taking up 99% of the disk and the last 1% dedicated towards repetitive simple gameplay that is desperate to be hidden by the devs... Zzzz...
The Ides @ Dec 31st 2007 5:13PM
You're kind of... misinformed. That was in-engine, like all the DMC game cutscenes. Does no one here play the games? Plus, if you don't like this sort of game, don't play it. There are certainly enough fans of this series to render your opinion useless.
Klepto @ Dec 29th 2007 6:30PM
Holy god was that lame.
Jerk Face @ Dec 31st 2007 10:06AM
Just don't steal my stuff, okay?
Jeff @ Dec 29th 2007 7:15PM
Is this series worthwhile? I've never played any of the others, but this has looked pretty cool thus far, and I notice it's coming out for PC...
Action/adventure?
HighFiveJesus @ Dec 30th 2007 3:22AM
No idea what you're getting yourself into. Also i can't help but scratch my head at the control scheme on the PC that doesn't result in broken fingers. I suggest a pad.
Phi Nguyen @ Dec 30th 2007 2:13AM
I've only played DMC3: SE and it's very much a button masher. There are combos both with and without gunplay and air juggles and various fighting "styles" to choose from. In the game, you basically walk around and kill all the baddies in a room to get to the next room. When you defeat enemies, they drop orbs that you can use to upgrade your weapons/fighting styles. There are very simple puzzles and pretty cool boss battles as well. Thinking about it, the DMC series to me continues the Final Fight/Streets of Rage style of gaming in a sense, just modernized a bit.
Nice to see you representing the Crysis peeps,
Phi ^_^
Au @ Dec 31st 2007 2:32PM
DMC is the Ninja Gaiden of PS2....In other words, play it, it's good.
Also, it's only as much of a button masher as you are a poor gamer. Try playing the game on normal difficulty =P see how far you get.
maylon @ Dec 29th 2007 8:00PM
Big ol' yawn. Capcom wont be getting my $60.00 plus tax.
propanol @ Dec 29th 2007 7:24PM
Pre-rendered cutscenes suck. Seriously. At this point, everything should be done in-engine. If you can't accomplish that, you should either:
(a) rethink your approach to cutscenes
(b) stop developing games altogether
Au @ Dec 31st 2007 2:35PM

labrats5 @ Dec 29th 2007 7:36PM
Maybe it is just cultural difference, but 99% of all Japanese written songs have terrible lyrics. That song was among the worst.
Also, about halfway through the video, was that Altair from Assassin's Creed in the audience?
Phi Nguyen @ Dec 30th 2007 2:18AM
Dude, I think Kingdom Hearts' theme song beats this one out in terms of crappy lyrics (which is funny considering I actually like thats song's music.) Seriously, look it up if you want a good WTF look on your face. It makes me laugh every time I hear that part about "meet(ing) your father".
*Hums song*
When you walk away
You don't hear me say please
Oh baby, don't go
Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight
It's hard to let it go
*End Humming*
Cyro @ Dec 30th 2007 10:43AM
@Labrats5: Thats exactly the same thing I was Thinking. Is that Altair ? LOL!
Lard @ Dec 29th 2007 7:51PM
I *hate* Opera.
ShortFuse @ Dec 29th 2007 10:17PM
I think Opera is a wonderful web browser.
mr nimblewick @ Dec 30th 2007 12:31AM
Opera rules. IE and Firefox will never sell well in Japan.
Bluebrake @ Dec 29th 2007 8:02PM
Are we sure that chick didn't used to be a guy? They did a good job on his voice though.
And this isn't Devil May Cry. Not until I hear some godawful actor spouting horribly cheesy action one-liners.
Secura @ Dec 29th 2007 8:37PM
I have never played a DMC game before. I feel left out.
Cicadymn @ Dec 29th 2007 9:27PM
Does anyone else think he looks excessively stupid with those headphones around his neck? What does he have to listen to an iPood while killing monsters? Are we going to see some product placement just so the developer can afford to make the game?
Psaakyrn @ Dec 30th 2007 7:46AM
Zune on 360, Walkman on PS3.
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Dec 29th 2007 9:33PM
LOL! He almost missed the performance! But if I was that girl I'd think that he was listening to other music the whole time because of those headphones on his neck.
