What? Shooters have progressed? According to who?

We have Halo 3. Which is Halo 2. Which is Halo 1. Which is 1998.

We have COD 4.... nuff said.

We have BioShock... which was a great game, but not much of a shooter.

Team Fortress 2? Again, a great game, but I wouldn't call it a shooter.

UT3... in the same boat as Halo and COD... a refinement of an existing and great franchise. Something doesn't have to be all new to be great; just some tweaks, a new graphics engine, and tried-and-true gameplay. I fucking love this game.

I wouldn't lump CoD4 and TF2 into the 'same ol stuff' category. CoD mixed things up with its new online leveling and gameplay setups compared to any of the WW2 CoD games, and TF2 is only old if you compare it to, well, TFC, which was released almost 10 years ago.

Still, it's not so much that UT3 is still just an Unreal Tournament game which makes it boring, it's that UT3 is just UT2004 with new paint.

It's all a matter of opinion. I love the new coat of paint, the vehicles, warfare mode... the gameplay just feels weightier and better. If Epic had changed anything too much it wouldn't be UT, and that would suck.

Moreover, are you guys talking about the PC version? Because the console version is slowed down 20%, and has you dodge my jumping in a particular direction. You guys'll probably like that a lot more.

So, which is longer, the PS3's delay, or the PS3's exclusivity window?

Neebs: We can. Unreal Engine 3 has a working 360 version (Gears of War anyone?), and the heavy duty gameplay logic is all done in UnrealScript (a dumber, slower Java that's proprietary to Epic), which is complete cross-platform. Honestly, the only things I would think holding UT3 back is the user generated content, specific integration with Xbox Live, and fixing the myriad of bugs that invariably pop out when you're switching platforms.

Considering that The 360 is a FPS oriented system, and the PS3 isn't. I predict sales to go up, way way up.

I don't envy anyone playing UT anything with a controller.

Halo it's not.

Neither do I, I'm just saying that there would be more people playing with X360 controllers than PS3 controllers.

Joystiq, you idiots, the terrible sales are for the PC version. We don't know how the ps3 version is selling yet, but if the Epic forums are any indicator-- damn well.

UT3 is a damn fun game. It isn't "revolutionary" (although, truth be told, I don't think a single game for years has been worthy of that word). But it takes the UT gameplay and takes it up a notch. What is fully deserving of the word is mod support, which you console owners probably don't appreciate. It means that you could be getting this year's 'counter strike' for free.

And I just want to say it bluntly, so I can get it out in 2007: I fucking despise all of console- hugging retards who love to falsely prophesize the PCs doom.

And all of you who, surely have never played Crysis, so distant are your feeble lives from PC gaming, but who are 100% sure that the gameplay is terrible. It isnt', dipshits. The gameplay is phenomenal.

I would agree with you about Crysis. One of the best games ever. I also agree with all the "console- hugging retards". I mean i got a 360, but i also play tons of PC games. Its called balance my friends. Some games are amazing on PC while other are amazing on 360(not ps3).

I envy you. I was so close to buying a 360 during the Halo 3 blitz with Mass Effect around the corner. I don't have an HDTV though, and I've gotten too used to gaming at high resolutions to switch back to SD.

Crysis, hilariously enough, because everyone likes to say it is only a "graphical showpiece" or a "tech demo" has some of the most innovative shooter gameplay of the year. The weapon customization, while available elsewhere, is executed so flawlessly that it genuinely adds to the game. The suit is just perfect; particularly when I play half-life, I miss it. You really can approach any objective however the hell you want. Sniping one by one, going in Rambo-style.

And the story, while nothing groundbreaking, was done so professionally and cinematically that it neared perfection.

Meh, I get so pissed off when people put it down out of envy and spite.

Yeah, cloak -> run a short distance -> wait for cloak to recharge and repeat until you get near enemies is really innovative gameplay. The weapon customisation is nice, I will give you that. The first half of the game was fun, but from the alien section it descended into below mediocre gameplay conventions (an escort mission where the NPC gets stuck on pieces of debris? Come on Crytek, you're pissing all over me now - do some QA).

It's certainly not the revolutionary shooter everyone is pegging it to be. The storytelling in it is almost laughable (if i wanted to just shoot stuff, I'd play UT3/TF2). On that note, this accurately explains Crysis: http://www.dumdeedum.com/planetcrap/crysis.html

This is coming from a PC gamer whose last serious foray into consoles was close to a decade ago with the wonderful Nintendo 64.

Honestly, Steve, I felt the suit was very balanced. What difficulty were you playing at? I tweaked my AI so that I got Delta level difficulty, but I kept the suit powers from normal so that I wouldn't have to duck behind a crate to wait for them to recharge. =P

I liked the story in an action movie kinda way. It never seemed corny or forced to me, and I liked all the characters-- psycho is funny, and prophet is a badass.

Ive said this many times before, but Crysis is for creative people. From playing it, it becomes easy to see for an unimaginative and no-creative person, its probably average. If you just cloak from bush to bush, wow that sounds boring as hell. When the koreans look up and see a jeep 30 feet above their heads which eventually crushes them, or the grenade under the car which blows the car into the house killing everyone but you-thats where the fun is. The more ADHD 12 year old you have deep inside you, the better.

I was playing it on the hardest difficulty available (I will give them credit, making them speak in korean was clever). I'm not saying the game is bad, but it's just not worthy of the "ZOMG BEST GAME EVAR 99%" that all the braindead reviewers seem to be bestowing upon it - did they just get a copy with the first fun half of the game in it or something? Maybe Crytek paid off review sites like IO/Eidos did.

The AI was frustrating as well, come to think of it. Especially when it came to foliage. They, by some miraculous form of evolved sight, could shoot flawlessly through it while I usually ended up emptying a clip into a tree because I couldn't see a bloody thing. And the helicopters could see where you were the moment you decloaked - even if you were laid face down in a bush. Yeah, IR, I know, but it doesn't make it less frustrating.

Again, the story was just awful - it wasn't even 'good' in a way B-movie stories are. It's just bad. Epic sci-fi plot my ass.
And as an English guy, the generic "BLOODY HELL MATE WANKER" musings of Psycho got old fast (I can hear that by simply stepping outside my house).
I'd heard rumours/hearsay that they had rewritten it (the story) some time before release - makes me wonder what could have been worse than the current one.

I can wholeheartedly say I am not looking forward to another installment of fighting metal tentacle monsters. If I wanted to see those I'd go watch one of those hentai movie things.

tl;dr: Overrated game is overrated.

@ Jeff.

One of the best things about the 360, is that you dont need a HDTV to enjoy high resolutions.

The 360 allows you to use VGA monitors (via a £10 lead), or DVI (if you have a HDMI 360), and has support for numerous monitor resolutions.

Thats the biggest thing holding me off buying a PS3, i have no HDTV, so the PS3 is a SD console to me, as i only own a monitor.

HDMI->DVI. Blam, PS3 on your monitor.

And I'm not totally sure how much £10 equals to in US dollars, but VGA cables from Microsoft here cost about $40.

yea dude seriously. thats not a good excuse not to buy a PS3, that just means you havent done your research lol. if the 360 can do HDMI to DVI then what makes you think the PS3 cant do it too? just head on over to http://www.newegg.com and you can buy some generic cables and they will work fine (my HDMI cable for my PS3 was like $5).

after just one glance at the site, i already see a HDMI to DVI cable for $8 and a DVI to VGA adapter also for $8. so $16 and your set.

I do like the choice of a VGA cable with the 360. I was shocked to find the PS3 has no such cable so I'm stuck with one playing it on composite. Or just not playing it at all which the case seems to be.

Oh and to balance it out - screw the Wii for no official VGA cable.

well i dont know if i would call it a port. as alot of people have already pointed out, the first demo was on 360. Epic simply did what all developers need to do, developed the games on multiple consoles simultaneously rather than one and port. i would think that with all the headache and delays developing on 360 and porting to PS3 adds, it would probably cost more than simply doing separate games.

either way, im not even gonna hate on the short timed exclusivity since we all knew it was multiplat from the get go. 360 owners are getting a pretty good game in UTIII.

Unless they make big gameplay changes and enhancements, no, 360 owners are not getting a good game.

This is not really a rumor.

UT3 was, for the most part, complete while the PS3 version was in development. I believe the online portion of the game needed additional coding and tweaking, but was put on hold to concentrate on the PS3 release. Keep in mind the 360 version shares the same codebase as the PC version, which was released a while back. If memory serves, the 360 version was played by an gaming magazine quite some time ago, which wrote a preview article about the experience.

UT3 on the 360 was never off. Being released after the PS3 version was a conscious effort by Epic and Sony who helped get the Unreal Engine optimized for the PS3.

My guess is that they thought this would be a system seller for the PS3. To date, it's sold modestly well... which there are a number of theories why it hasn't sold better. I do suspect the 360 version will outsell the PS3 version, however I don't expect UT3 to reach Gears of War like sales.

Irony: there's a mod that puts Ut3 in a second-person view based on Gears of War, and a Marcus Fenix character model.

Guess which platform won't get to see it? =P

If you're refering to the 360 platform, don't automatically assume it won't have user created mods. Epic stated that they planned to discuss such an option with Microsoft when it came time to finishing UT3.

There's no technical reason why it's not possible. However it's up to Microsoft to allow such an option.

We do know that Epic does have a relationship with Microsoft, being the ones who convinced them to add additional memory to the 360 specification. And Epic was responsible for one of the biggest selling games on the 360, which was sold by Microsoft.

Perhaps in a way, offering such an option on the PS3 first was a way to test the waters.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

I'm not sure if user generated content on the 360 would end up being a great thing or not. Conceptually it is a good thing, but I remember playing the original Unreal Tournament eons ago online and continuously having to download new maps to play on different servers. A lot of these maps were not great maps, and having so many different maps meant that it was much harder to learn them. Epic could easily port the best user-created content to 360 via Xbox Live download. That way in a sense the PS3 version would be like the minor leagues. Some people will complain that content that is free on PS3 might be sold to us on 360, but I would rather pay $5 for the 10 best maps that everyone else is also getting and that can be integrated with matchmaking, than have to wade through 200 crappy free maps just to find good ones that might get lost amid the swamp of crappy material.

Anyone saying UT3's low sales on the PC is due to the cost or knowledge of maintaining a gaming PC is a moron. If UT3 was anything more than a re-polished UT 2K4, maybe it would have sold more. But it's basically Mortal Kombat in FPS format, and PC gamers have seen it all before, and they're bored with it, especially with quality games like CoD4 and TF2 that bring something fresh to the table at the same time. Orange box sold ike mad on the PC in retail and through Steam, and you can see those numbers where you log on to play online where there a CRAPLOAD of high volume servers running.
Console gamers maybe eat up UT3 because it's pretty and faster than what they're used to, but PC gamers have been there, done that, Rein needs to get his team working on something original and fresh to maintain that part of the market.
