"Somehow, the math just didn't add up. Any game being worked on by the creator of Final Fantasy and the developers of Chrono Trigger should be the most legendary RPG ever. How did Blue Dragon end up a repetitive, boring, ugly mess? We may never know."

You have the incorrect variables in that equation. Let me rewrite it for you, with the current known values:

"Somehow, the math just didn't add up. Any game being worked on by the driving force behind Final Fantasy: This Spirits Within and the artist who can't draw anything but the same 4 characters should be the most stock RPG ever...and Blue Dragon solidly was! Why did we hype it up knowing all this? Well, we may NEVER KNOW..."

Reaching hands, you are blind

Fear and awe in your eyes
Without us you can't see
Searching hands, you are blind
Staring down eternity

Hope, despair in your mind
Prick your hands 'till they bleed
Show you what you can't find
Staring through eternity

For me, GH3 was so bad it made me look back fondly on being raked over the coals for $40 (I got it on sale) for the 32 "track pack" that was GH 80s.

It just doesn't click. I actually liked the little movies of the band getting put in jail and such. But the rest is bad, bad, bad. The gameplay didn't feel right, it was so criminally bad I have to wonder how Activision could have signed off on it before shipping it. I had to conclude they either didn't care enough to get it right or test that they did get it right. This I understand was later fixed in the patch that lets you adjust A/V lag and corrected A/V sync somewhat on PS3s with Dolby Digital turned on.

In short, if you can't make playing "La Grange" fun, you screwed up pretty badly. I was so looking forward to playing that song.

Apparently Activision and Red Octane were quite sure they held all the cards, that making the controllers and getting the song lineup was the tough part, that any company (say, Neversoft) could write a guitar rhythm game. They were very wrong.

I had the same problem with lag on the Wii, it made songs unplayable, but, it hasn't happened for a while. I do like it alot though, better (guitar only) than rock band, especially the guitar (*shutters*)

I have to say, in defense of Guitar Hero 3, that while it did have lag, no surround sound on the wii, and problems, that I was still able to have fun with it. It is my first Guitar Hero game, and it actually had several songs that I enjoyed - but then again, I've never been a fan of Metal, and there were many songs in this game that were far from it (I'm looking at you, Weezer & Kaiser Chiefs).

I've played the others, but maybe this just holds a special place in my heart because it's the only one I own.

So many people have complained about Mass Effect. I haven't played the game but is the gameplay really that mediocre? I have seen a lot of videos and it does seem quite mediocre...the whole 3rd person shooter mechanic has been done way better in other games, the AI seems to be really stupid, etc.

ME is an RPG. if you go in expecting call of duty: space marine, you will be disapointed. Any FPS fan will find the combat rather simple and straightforward and woefully unbalanced (by the end of the game, you are god and enemies fall before you with little effort).

What ME tries to be, is an interactive movie or novel and the greatest amount of effort is spent on trying to get you to feel emotionally connected with the characters and the story. The gunplay really is secondary and the game is DESIGNED that way.

So, if you like immersive story telling in your RPG and think that story is more important that gunplay, then ME is for you. If you liked choose your own adventure books as a kid, then ME is for you.

If you want COD: Space Marine, then ME is not for you. If you can't see the forest for the trees, then ME is not for you.

eugene, KOTOR was also an RPG, and a pretty damn great GAME. Chrono Trigger was an RPG, and is one of the best GAMES of all time. Although I don't like it so much, Super Mario RPG is a GAME that most people seem to love. There are obviously many other RPGs I could go on with but that would just get boring.

Mass Effect is just the same as BioShock, a piece of crap game that gets massive fanboy praise for a bunch of things that aren't crucial to a fun game playing experience while ignoring the massive faults that make it (talking about BioShock here) about as good an FPS as Turok 3 is.

I'm definitely not saying that story and stuff isn't important, but by far the most important thing for a game to do is play well, and be super fun, which Mass Effect largely fails at doing.

chris,

Uhm, okay. You just said what I said, but really aggressively. I didn't say ME was the best game ever or that it was a good FPS. I just said it's a game for people who are more interested in story and character development and not so much on the shooter elements.

ME has many faults, some technical and some design issues. Some people can get over them and other people will get hung up on them. If you're the type that gets frustrated over clunky UI, inconsistent framerates and texture pops... then you probably won't enjoy ME. If those things don't bother you, then you'll get more miles out of it.

The combat gameplay, while sometimes glitchy, is easily superior to 95% of RPG's in my opinion. Comparing it to Oblivion makes me giggle at how much better ME is. The problem is that the combat is close enough to a shooter in quality that people compare it to one. It is not.

I loved the game and plan to replay the last half or third of it (Letting Ashley live this time, sorry Kaiden) along with all sidequests that I skipped. I usually never replay single player games.

Hmm... not sure what Chris' problem with BioShock is... I loved that game. The combat is great. But ME OTOH, I just can't get into. I know it's not meant to be a 3rd person shooter, but since the battles are set up that way it should at least be competent with respect to those games... it's not. The various texture/frame issues don't bother me, but the clunky battles just killed the game for me. May as well have just made the game a full on menu driven game if you're not going to handle real time combat correctly.

OK dude, were you hoping to get a cookie for slamming on a game people liked? Bioshock wasn't crap - hence it being liked by so many people. Maybe it wasn't designed for you with only what you wanted, but to call it crap is pretty lame. Of course it wasn't perfect, but is sure was better than most everything else last year.

Anyway, I thought ME was a fun storyline, but there was a lot of work left to be done on the fighting side of things. The gunplay was not very entertaining, and the vehicle mechanics made me want to kill. Some of the enemies were very frustrating due to the weapon system, while others were way too easy.

Besides that, the idea that you have to keep running around the ship to talk to people standing in the same spot is really annoying. How about lighteding up on the static BS if on a ship and letting the characters walk around? Its not like they would get lost.

ME wasn't a bad game to me - it just wasn't great like I had hoped for.

I thought the combat was quite good in ME. It's not perfect, but it's at least half as good as a squad-based game like GRAW and that's pretty good for a game which is really about interviewing people mostly anyway.

I was comparing it to Oblivion in my head though just a little bit ago, and Oblivion is so much better. It isn't broken into little bite-sized worlds like ME is, meaning you can run from town to town or across town, and each area isn't just a linear walk to the end and back. But the biggest comparison is to look at the side quests. In Oblivion, the writing and world design is fantastic on the main quests and side quests. In ME the main quest is fantastic, but the side quests aren't very fleshed out. You drive around outdoors in an annoying vehicle trying to get over some crag, then blast some baddies at a distance with your cannon. Then you go inside and there are one of 3 or 4 layouts for the interior, slightly broken up by doors that won't open (but the rooms behind are still on the map) or boxes in the way.

Oh yeah, and Oblivion didn't have elevators.

Now that I think of it, perhaps Mass Effect is in the right spot at #9.

Although I wouldn't rip its head off and shit down its neck like some above, I think Bioshock was GREATLY overrated. In the end, it's a beautiful shooter with a chump story that was lifted from a better game anyway. That's enough for me to enjoy it, but #2 no way.

Blue Dragon just outright pissed me off. It had 8-bit Era character development, and 16-bit era story, with presentation values that were total ass. The gameplay was typical, but in an RPG, I don't even care -that- much about that.
What I wanted was a great story, which I did not get, and character depth, which flat out isn't there at all.
Shallow, shallow, SHALLOW piece of crap that all parties should be ashamed of. (Though, I'm sure it appeals to that story hating archaic loving Dragon Quest crowd)

Does the era really make a difference in story and character development? As mentioned in the article Chrono Trigger had one of the best stories I can think of and that definitely isn't a modern game.

Nope, doesn`t even appeal to the Dragon Quest fans. It`s too "western" in it`s design, and is just full of weirdness that doesn`t sit well.

It seems like they just sort of tossed the team together and told them to make a game. Without any specific leader - they were all "leaders" - the game doesn`t really have any solid path. So it takes the boring, crappy, middle path.

Chrono Trigger's story is SHALLOW, and the character depth is kiddy pool deep. You're sure you're not letting nostalgia and a general hatred for videogame stories cloud your judgement, or something? I see that often with fans of CT, FF4, 6, IX, Half-Life 2, FFXII, etc.

I guess if you loathe videogame stories and character depth, and don't mind the 8-bit gameplay, DQ8 is superb!

I think that the people wanted Mass Effect to be a FPS so bad that they forgot that they were playing a Role Playing Game. You know, a game in which you assume the role of a character and follow their story. But I guess If the characters dont go to a battle screen, line up in neat rank and files and take turns attacking each other, then it isnt considered a RPG by the gaming community.

I loved RE4 for the Wii. It completely changed the game for me. In the GC version, it felt like you were kind of marching through, always having to keep your aim focused where you're most likely to shoot.
But swinging the Wiimote around like a gun make it so awesome to peek around corners and whip your aim around thoughtlessly whenever you hear a noise coming from one direction.
Plus, you could actually hit all the targets in the shooting range games.

For me, it made RE4 go from an 8/10 to a 10/10.

The controls are fantastic and reason enough why Capcom should make a real RE game for Wii, be it a remake or new.

Mass Effect is on my top 5 list this year, yea the story was awesome but the reason it ranks high for me is the....gameplay. The only reason I completed 2 full playthroughs, all sidequests, is because I love the battle gameplay a lot. I played it the correct way, stopping every few seconds to select commands for your teamates and yourself...this is an RPG not a FPS.

I love MLB sims, since I'm a huge baseball fan, but if you had played the Wii version of The Bigs, you wouldn't have put it on your list. I was starving for some Wii baseball action, but I found this game unplayable. Luckily I got MLB 08 coming out soon enough, and MLB Power Pros is good enough to hold me over for a bit.

"Not only does it feature one of the worst soundtracks ever featured in a Guitar Hero game (I only really enjoyed about five or six of the songs)"

So you have no taste in music and that makes the soundtracks bad? Bravo on showing us you have no clue what you are talking about and that we shouldn't give a damn about your opinion.

You caught me -- because I preferred the soundtracks in the first two Guitar Hero games, I clearly have no taste in music.

Or maybe, it's that "Raining Blood", "Cliffs of Dover", "One", "3's and 7's", "Stricken", "Before I Forget", "Miss Murder", "Holiday in Cambodia", "Black Magic Woman", "Black Sunshine", "Story of My Life", "Talk Dirty to Me" and ALL of the unlockable songs were downright painful to play through.

Every rhythm game is bound to contain songs you don't particularly care for. Guitar Hero III just had more than the average bear, in my most humble of opinions.

Personally, I think Guitar Hero III had the best songs in the series, but they weren't good choices for the game. I mean that just because a song sounds good doesn't mean that it will be fun to go through the motions.

I thought the same thing about Sweet Child O Mine from the second game. Fantastic song, but absolutely no fun to play on Guitar Hero.

On the other hand, Rock Band had a lot of meh songs that turned out to be fun as hell to play. I'm not a big fan of Tom Sawyer, but I find myself playing that song over and over just because the feel of the song is perfect.
