With the princess saved and the galaxy once again at peace, it's back to the status quo for the Wii, as Hudson has kicked off the new year by confirming plans to bring Deca Sports – a new "casual sports" title that promises to use the Wii remote in "unique yet accessible ways" – to the States this summer. The minigame comp will include ten different sporting events "for players and sports fans of all ages," which no doubt means casual gamers or those simply looking for a reason – any reason – to play the Wii.
Deca Sports'' laundry list of events reads like the developers dropped a bunch of activities into a hat and pulled them out at random, with beach volleyball and archery sharing space with snowboarding, soccer, and super cross. Other events include badminton, basketball, curling and figure skating. The game even includes kart racing, making this collection, if nothing else, eclectic. Still, while this sort of offering worked great as a console pack-in, now, more than a year after the Wii first seduced us with its sultry waggle, we can't help but feel that it's time for something meatier.

I wonder how figure skating game will incorporate the use of Wiimote.
Maybe you are supposed to use a Wiimote as a goldbar and bribe the other judges.

You hit the other skaters over the head with it.

I'm looking forward to the curling...
Honestly though, this Sports Island (I think that's the new title) has been getting some decent previews. If the girlfriend will play it and it has a couple of good drinking game qualities it may be worth it.

Sports Island is the EU name. Deca Sporta was the JP title, which has been slightly modified to Deca Sports for NA.

if soccer moms would stop buying this crap then companies would quit making it. You'd be surprised how many copies of games like "Carnival Games" and "Game Party" I sell every week.

But no more than Mario Galaxy or Guitar Hero III... you know, real games.

What I find interesting is that so many people are hating on the Wii. NO really, can't we just like a different kind of system and keep our angry snips to ourselves. I deleted mine after I wrote them, although it was tempting to compare avatars to D & D.

yup, i've given up hoping nintendo changes. They sold out big time with the wii, allowing crap title after crap title on the wii just for some easy money. Part of me can't really blame them though, because when they were an actual game company they kept getting smoked by sony and microsoft.
Still, after growing up with nintendo and some good memories in the early-mid 90s, a little bit of my gamer side dies everytime i see shit like this come out.

Then you're looking back with rose colored glasses. Sure, the NES had Super Mario 3 and Battletoads, but it also had Yo Noid and Castelian. In fact, it probably had the worst ratio of bad to good games of any console ever (save maybe the PS1).
The SNES might have had Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World, but it also had Dream TV and Revolution X.
Every generation of consoles has it's share of bad games, and if the worst we're going to get for Wii is a glut of mediocre minigame collections then they're doing quite well. Sure, I'm sick of them too, but it's just par for the course.

I'll be honest:
I enjoyed Revolution X as a kid. What was so bad about it, anyways? :S

These types of games have inundated the DS market in Japan for a while now. It's just another pattern that, most likely, will not be repeated in the US. Certainly no one reading joystiq is going to buy this, so it's pretty pointless to use this game in order to put down the Wii.

At this point, we should just create an association against crappy Wii minigames.

It's kinda sad that you're all just jumping on the "all mini-games suck" hate wagon, kids.
If you've been paying attention, you'd know that this one looks to actually be a promising, good game.
Honestly, there's a bigger glut of FPS games than there are mini games right now.
