Vanguard was a fun game; one of the first to use the "Insert Coin to Continue Playing" arcade games as well, if I recall.

True story, I had that theme stuck in my head for 10 years... and I would watch Flash Gordon to try to dislodge it... but it wasn't until I booted up my already-old-for-the-time Atari 800 and played a round of Vanguard that I realized THAT was the particular key that was stuck in my head.

Boy, am I glad that's over.

Doo-dooooo... doodly-doo doodly-doo doodly-doodly-doodly-doodly-DOO DOO!!!

Horizontal? Only part of Vanguard is horizontal.
Starts horizontal, then angles down, horizontal again, angles up, then it becomes a vertical scroller until you reach the boss.

I remember pouring coins into it, as well as Gorf, back in the day...

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who read the headline, then the article, and realized that to me, yes, it is that Vanguard.
