- B-Wings (Arcade) - A vertical shooter that we're sure will remind you of an intense game of Ikaruga -- OK, that's a lie.
- Express Raider (Arcade) - Can't remember ever seeing this in the arcades. Be a wild west desperado and relieve people of their cash.
- Vanguard (Arcade) - No, not Sony Online's flop. This is a horizontal space shooter from 1981.

Vanguard was a fun game; one of the first to use the "Insert Coin to Continue Playing" arcade games as well, if I recall.

Vanguard also had the Hawkmen Theme from Flash Gordon (1980). :D
Terry @ Jan 3rd 2008 11:21AM
True story, I had that theme stuck in my head for 10 years... and I would watch Flash Gordon to try to dislodge it... but it wasn't until I booted up my already-old-for-the-time Atari 800 and played a round of Vanguard that I realized THAT was the particular key that was stuck in my head.
Boy, am I glad that's over.
Doo-dooooo... doodly-doo doodly-doo doodly-doodly-doodly-doodly-DOO DOO!!!

Horizontal? Only part of Vanguard is horizontal.
Starts horizontal, then angles down, horizontal again, angles up, then it becomes a vertical scroller until you reach the boss.
I remember pouring coins into it, as well as Gorf, back in the day...

I loved Phoenix and Pleaides.

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who read the headline, then the article, and realized that to me, yes, it is that Vanguard.
