Foreign reviewers have received copies of Devil May Cry 4 on PS3, and have revealed a few new details about the game. First is an annoyance that we're sure many will complain about: the 5GB install to remove the game's load times is not optional. When the game releases, you'll be forced to endure minutes upon minutes of waiting as the game copies gigabytes of data to your PS3 hard drive.
There's good news, though. The game will use the PSN for ranking modes. You'll also be able to collect achievements in the game (like in the Xbox 360 version) and you'll be able to see what achievements your friends have collected (a la Xbox Live).
Finally, SIXAXIS controls have been added to the game. By tilting the controller, you'll be able to control the camera. It's not a significant extra, but it is a nice, subtle way of using the PS3's tilt functionality.

I'd only complain if I had a game console that normally only comes with a 10 to 20 gig drive. But nah, my game console has a 60 gig drive.

Uh, I *do* have a 20GB HDD on my PS3, so yeah I'm a bit pissed that I'm *required* to give up 1/4 of my hard drive if I want to get the PS3 version of this. Of course, my 360 just red-ringed on me, so it's not like I have a lot of other options (until my coffin gets back to me).
That said, the game looks cool, but a) is it going to be God-damned impossible like DMC3? and b) am I going to have to hold my arms perfectly motionless if I don't want the camera to move?

Well at least the PS3 drive isn't a perprietary drive, you can buy any standard laptop drive and up the storage space, unlike the 360 that has a Microsoft X-box only drive in a special casing. That's all I'm really trying to say. I'm sure DMC4 will be difficult, but not as insanely difficult as 3 was. From what I understand they added a bit more balance by allowing Dante to switch stances during gameplay and not by going to some statue. Also Nero has some kind of Devil Bringer to help chain combos, I guess to many people complained that combos knocked back villians to much thus breaking combos. So the Devil Bringer allows you to knock back, then pull back the enemy to you to continue your combo chain.
So now you can do Killer Instinct level combos. ULTRA COMBO!

One does hope that the camera control isn't obligatory.

I'm pretty sure it'll be optional like in Heavenly Sword. Anyone else use the tilt-camera in that one?

I thought PS3 'achievements' were called 'accomplishments'?
I forgot what game I was playing and it said "accomplishment completed".

The install doesn't bother me in the slightest. I mean, the only people who have to worry about that would be those that keep loads of videos on their hard drive ... but I'd imagine most of them have already upgraded to like 100gb hard drives...
I can kind of see the tilt function working, but it could also just turn out annoying. I hope we have the option of turning it off in any case, 'cos it may well just end up ruining the game for some if you can't.
Not all that bothered about achievements, but I'm sure others will welcome their inclusion.

Problem with the install, imo, is that the game is no longer ‘plug and play’. I always considered that to be a ‘feature’ of console games as opposed to PC games where you always have to spend a long time installing them before you can play them.
If next year you’re long done with the game and un-installed the game data, and a friend comes along who wants to give the game a quick try, you have to tell him to either wait 10 minutes for the game data to install or to try another game. That’s annoying.

Thinking about it, the tilt frees up an analogue stick. I actually like the idea of being able to tilt with the controller. It would have made games like SotC much easier and another open command stick could only be a good thing.

Hmmm I wonder if this 5GB is only on the PS3 version. It'll be good to have no loading like on Uncharted. If the 360 people have to do the 5 GB save thats gonna piss alot of them off. lol!

Because the subject is inevitable...
PS3 version vs. 360 version.
PS3 version advantages:
- no load times,
- slightly better visuals,
- a better feel to the controller,
- Sixaxis support.
360 version advantages:
- no mandatory install.
Both have:
- Rumble,
- Achievements.

well heres the thing fanboy
the ps3 vers will no doubt still have load times,
it wont have slighty better visuals since capcom said they're both equal and gametrailers posted a comparison which most people agree'd were clones,
'better feel for controller' is a matter of ones opinion and not of the general ps3 community
sixaxis support, well if its like any of the other games it'll be gimmicky and limited.
and only duel shock 3 has rumble,

Im sorry but the sixaxis feels like a 3rd party madcatz controller compared to the 360. and the triggers feel cheaply done(like a after thought). yea you made that visuals thing up

I counted the no load times as a PS3 advantage.
A --mandatory-- install, regardless of the benefits it brings, is itself a negative, simply because it takes up a large ammount of hard drive space. Someone with a 20 gig hard drive would lose almost a third of their available memory to the install.

None of these make me prefer the PS3 over the 360 version.
Of course, one of my friends is a DMC freak, and she'll be using my PS3 for it ANYWAY, but still. That doesn't mean it's MY preference.
I would just flip a coin.

In the interest of spirited discussion, and since you brought the subject up, I have a few counter points for you.
-Cacheing on the harddrive doesnt eliminate load times. it shortens them, and considering the differences in the drive speeds (9MB per sec for ps3 16MB per sec) it may not be as important to cache that much data on the 360s harddrive.
-According to the devs and the videos that were posted, there are no visual differences between the two versions. I believe they used the word "identical" to describe them.
-The controllers "feel" being better is also highly subjective. Both controllers have sholder buttons and triggers, and while the L1and R1 are superior in feel to the left and right bumper buttons the triggers and analog stick placement are much better on the 360 controller.
-Sixaxis support can either be an good alternative to standard controls or a horrible gimmick. Using it to control the camera sounds like the latter of the two.

Uncharted managed a load-free game, so I see no reason why DMC4 couldn't also.
How good the game looks and how the controller feels is based off of p/reviewers. Apparently the game is easier to play on the PS3 controller, and (again: apparently) this is something a lot of people are saying.
For Sixaxis: as long as there's the option of turning it off, it can't do any harm, and may well be a good addition.

I have upgraded my 60GB PS3 with a 250GB hard drive, so this wouldn't be an issue for me. But, I would feel sympathy for anyone who bought the 20GB PS3 model. Too bad they couldn't give an option of running without HD caching, even if it would be misearably slow in this case. Of course, the way reviews go these days, even if they recommended against running without hard drive install 20 times while loading the game, every review would complain about slow load times when running without a hard drive install...
I guess this is showing an advantage of the (faster) DVD-ROM drive in the XB360 as compared to the BD-ROM drive of the PS3. On the other hand, the vast majority of XB360 drives out in the market are only 20GB. And, of course, Microsoft does NOT ALLOW mandatory Hard Drive presence for any XB360 games - so the developers did not even have a choice in the case of the XB360.

Bluray is faster actually. 360s DVD is only faster for 15% of the outer edge of single layered discs only. Bluray loads at the same speed everywhere on the disc, and the same on both single and dual layered discs.
So where 360s speed that you're aware of falls off really fast, Bluray does not.
"According to the devs and the videos that were posted, there are no visual differences between the two versions. I believe they used the word "identical" to describe them"
And according to others they are not identical, I believe they used the word "superior" to describe the PS3 one. As it supports subsurface scattering and the 360 one does not

Using the SIXAXIS for camera is better than having a bunch of similar jerking motions that the controller confuses for other moves.
