Mad Catz to make Rock Band instruments
With the absolute flood of third-party guitars for the Guitar Hero series, it's not that surprising that accessory-makers are jumping on the Rock Band-wagon, too. Well, at least one is. Mad Catz today announced a "multi-year licensing agreement" with MTV Games to produce "both wired and wireless bass guitars, a drum percussion set bundled with professional quality wooden drum sticks, and a wired microphone."While having extra options for drum kits and microphones is nice, the addition of officially licensed, wireless, third-party guitars will be welcome news to PS3 owners tired of not being able to use their Guitar Hero III guitars with Rock Band and Xbox 360 owners tired of tripping over wires -- not to mention general Rock Band owners tired of replacing their broken bundled guitars. The instruments will be available in the "first half of 2008," according to the release.
While the release specifically addresses Rock Band instruments, it also leaves the door open for other applicable "game accessories." We personally can't wait for the inevitable pyrotechnics launcher that goes off every time you nail a tough solo. Just, er, be careful with it, OK?

That's cool that 3rd party peripherals are on the way.
Too bad that Mad Catz products suck.
Zertoss @ Jan 4th 2008 12:11PM
Yeah, I'd wait for some other 3rd party whose business model doesn't revolve around making crappy products for people to waste their money on to try their hand at this.
xFenixKnightx @ Jan 4th 2008 12:11PM
Mad Catz? You mean Mad Crapz!!!! All their sh!t sux! Anybody who is in here knows better than to buy this crap. Very poor quality.
NoHitHair @ Jan 5th 2008 4:19PM
Broken worthless instruments...
CONFIRMED.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 4th 2008 12:06PM
That that Activision! Now you not only don't get money from Harmonix when I play Rock Band, you don't get money from me buying your guitars either.
Jackasses.
BTW, I don't know where there is an implication that RB guitars are all breaking in here (and on Kotaku). That was just the first round of guitars. Yes, an impressive 100% of my friend's first-day guitars broke, but the replacements (which have been shipped since the start of December with the game) are great.
Norm @ Jan 4th 2008 1:05PM
My replacement was shipped to me broken. I got a guitar with no downstrum, and drums with no working red drum. Both were replacements.
I think that its a good thing for them to liscense mad catz. I think the problem with most of their past peripherals lies in the comfortablility of use, technically they are sound, and they make the best pads to hack.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 4th 2008 1:56PM
I was having an issue with downstrum on my launch guitar. I opened up, hoping to follow the previously posted DIY fix, only to find that my guitars innards looked nothing like the DIY instructions innards.
My problem was a foam pad got glued too close to the actuator, so that the actuator didn't fully actuate on downstrums. A minus head screwdriver and a little elbow grease later and that pad was gone, and I haven't had a problem since.
michas_pi @ Jan 4th 2008 12:21PM
I don't care if the instruments go for a dime a dozen, I will never purchase Mad Catz equipment.
Juice @ Jan 4th 2008 12:33PM
Whoa the MadCatz hate is strong in here. On the opposite end of the spectrum, are there any "high end" gaming controller companies. Like something made to withstand whipping it across the room?
timnc @ Jan 4th 2008 12:50PM
Logitech makes a pretty good joystick, IMHO.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 4th 2008 1:57PM
Logitech is the only one that comes to mind.
Hirsbrunner @ Jan 4th 2008 2:08PM
Agree with Logitech.
Their wireless PS2 controller is awesome. Much more comfortable than the DualShock2, at least to me.
Although, the current Logitech PS3 controller is a letdown. No sixaxis support? What the hey?
TheQuagster @ Jan 5th 2008 7:57AM
Pelican is ok with me... They can make a pretty good controller, as long as it isn't wireless... I remember playing halo and wouldn't be able to do a crouch jump because i had to hold a for a while to get it to work...
Wayne @ Jan 4th 2008 12:42PM
I bet they are contractually obligated to make wired PS3 instruments only...
JJ Rooster @ Jan 4th 2008 12:44PM
Cool, I wonder if Activision might feel the pressure to allow compatability now that they may have zero chance to make money cross-selling guitars. God damn them all!
Amber @ Jan 4th 2008 12:49PM
Would be nice to have a wireless guitar but it's madcatz so I'll wait for the red octane wireless for 360 to be available without the shitty game it comes with right now.
copa @ Jan 4th 2008 12:56PM
"Just, er, be careful with it, OK?"
Oh, I get it. Because 100 innocent people died in that fire. Yeah, that was hilarious.
Jon @ Jan 4th 2008 1:38PM
Well...it made me laugh.
FidliousWong @ Jan 4th 2008 3:51PM
Well at least they got a brief preview of their eternity for listening to the devils music.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 4th 2008 8:00PM
The internet has a way of killing any moral decency left in people.
Check 4chan to see what I mean.
Andy S. @ Jan 4th 2008 12:56PM
Wouldn't these be some of the first peripherals that Mad Catz has made since they bought Saitek? Maybe there's a chance that they're using what they gained in that acquisition to turn out some controllers that aren't complete junk?
Blazur @ Jan 4th 2008 1:12PM
Everything I've ever got from Mad Catz has been horribly un-ergonomic or easily broken. Their product suck!
Rocketboy @ Jan 4th 2008 1:28PM
MadKatz does not TOTALLY suck. Granted, most of their products do suck, but they were the only 3rd party company to have an officially licensed PS2 memory card.
Speddy @ Jan 4th 2008 1:46PM
So what you are saying is that MadCatz is crap. Not totally crap. But just plain crap.
Rocketboy @ Jan 5th 2008 7:45PM
Exactally. Crap. Not totally crap. Although, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Jon @ Jan 4th 2008 1:40PM
I bought a used 360 cord extender so I can play GH3 from my kitchen with the old explorer, and so far it hasn't fried my box or the guitar. So yeah, some very simple things they make might work.
Also, I didn't know it was Mad Crapz! till arfter I got it home.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jan 4th 2008 3:21PM
Any USB extension works as well. It's not really necessary that it be designed for the xbox bread-away section. I have 3 or 4 USB extensions of different lengths floating around that I use when I set up Rock Band.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jan 4th 2008 7:24PM
Okay, now that looks strange. I meant break-away
Jon @ Jan 4th 2008 7:36PM
thanks. I thought as much wasn't super-sure. Also, it was $2 for a bit over 6 feet - not bad huh?
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 4th 2008 1:59PM
I needs me another wireless guitar at least. I think I can live with wired drums and mic, but the guitar needs to be wireless.
Paul Gale @ Jan 4th 2008 2:19PM
The Station reference...how tasteless.
Tom @ Jan 4th 2008 2:58PM
I'd like a comically tiny drum set peripheral. Don't let me down, Mad Catz!
Farseer (GDI) @ Jan 4th 2008 3:22PM
Friends don't let friends use Mad Catz. Period.
Seroth @ Jan 4th 2008 4:24PM
I'm glad that a third party is FINALLY announcing Rock Band controllers. I don't care if its Mad Catz, and I won't care until I see some reviews of the controllers. C'mon. Give us a better strum bar, with the looks and feel of the Stratocaster!
Thatoneguy64 @ Jan 4th 2008 5:46PM
Okay, remember how the Rock Band instruments not working problem?
Yeah, it's about to get a lot worse.
Amber @ Jan 8th 2008 2:09PM
+1
ThornedVenom @ Jan 4th 2008 8:02PM
I wouldn't touch Madcatz peripherals with a yard pole.
I just wonder how long their drums would last.
brno32 @ Jan 8th 2008 7:00PM
i dont see why everybody thinks mad catz sucks. I use there controllers alot they work fine and are much cheaper.
