Microsoft wants to say "sowwy" for the intermittent Xbox Live issues plaguing the service over the holiday, and they'd like to apologize with a free Xbox Live Arcade game. Major Nelson posts a letter from Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live, which has a lot of customer service filler in it until the line about a free XBLA game for "all our Xbox Live members around the world" -- India is going to be psyched!
The letter says specific details are forthcoming, so now we're left wondering if there'll be a couple options or if it's just gonna be free Frogger for everyone. If that's the case, then someone is gettin' thrown under a car! Get it? Sigh.

for those saying that this downtime has been for the first time in years....
Let's call a spade a spade. It seems everytime something goes on having to do with xbox live (Christmas, Gaming shows that Microsoft promotes live with a free week of gold for everyone), the system slows. that's the plain truth of the matter. Nobody upgrades servers unless they HAVE TO upgrade servers, and I would've hoped by this time, Microsoft would've expected a bit of a boom for the holiday season.
Regardless, I still love my live, love my Microsoft, and fraggin No0bZ.
And yeah, points would be a better option than just a game.... I've got Robotron and Joust as proof they will stick us with something shitty as a free gift. (played each exactly 1 time)
Make it so Microsoft, Make it so.

The fairest thing Microsoft could do would be to give everyone a certain amount of free points to spend on whatever they want. When they give out a free game (as in Carcassonne), they alienate all those who've already spent their money to buy it. The "compensation" is felt only by those who didn't buy the game and by those who actually want the game. MICROSOFT POINTS, that would be the fairest thing to do.

The fairest thing MS could do would be to remove the sand from the vaseline. You xbox lovers have been taking it bareback since launch day and loving it. What possibly changed. Ms doesn't respect you anymore? They never did. You don't deserve respect. you belong to the RED RING OF DEATH CULT. Drink yer koolaid, the spaceship will be here for you soon. Idiots.

Here's my problem with the outages:
I don't play online very much. Right now, I don't even have a gold account. I do, however, play Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion all the time, and I have purchased almost every add-on for the game (except horse armor, of course). Whenever I want to continue playing my saved game, my XBox 360 has to check in with XBox Live to make sure that my purchased content is legitimate. If I'm not online, then NONE of the add-ons work, and my game save is corrupted by the lack of data.
Now, I should be able to play my OFFLINE game with my legally-purchased add-ons without a hassle. When the network is down, and I can't connect to Live, then I CAN'T PLAY OBLIVION SINGLE PLAYER.
This is unacceptable. I paid for that content. Nobody at the time of purchase told me that it was ONLY usable if I had an Internet connection and XBox Live was up and running. My gamertag should be enough to allow me to play my purchased content!!!
I'm really not happy about that whole situation. If I'd known there would be such a limitation to the purchased content, I would have bought the add-on DISC instead, so I wasn't bound to an ONLINE check for my OFFLINE game.
This needs to stop, Microsoft. I paid, it's mine to play, so LET ME PLAY without having to connect to Live to check my content. This is ridiculous.

Update: As of January 5th Live STILL sucks.
COD4 matchmaking won't work, and team fortress wont even log online. WHAT THE HELL? It will take more than a crappy arcade..this is inexcusable!
