As a 360 owner (with HD DVD...and the Matrix trilogy in HD) I am gald too. Why? Because I also own a PS3 and think the Blu-Ray format is as good if not better and I'm sick of the format war too even though I can play either. We don't need two formats. Keep it easy for consumers and MS...time for a Blu-Ray 360!

Fantastic! Now, when the great Image Constraint Token catastrophe of 2012 starts screwing over consumers, Sony can be held solely responsible. Blu-ray just won exclusivity to HDCP... ummm, hurray?

Haha, bought an HD-DVD player AND a PS3. We were gonna win either way.

I honestly wish Blu-Ray hadn't won because oh my god, Sony, could you be bigger pricks about how supposedly "awesome" you are? But HD-DVD deserves their loss for dragging their feet practically the entire time on releases.

Slow and steady (Blu-Ray) won the race. They've had a constant flow of decent stuff since the war began. HD was doing... I don't know what. Waiting? But they took their sweet time on releases and, well, now we see where that gets you.

I do hope they get rid of the blue packaging altogether, though. It's nasty looking and half the reason I wanted HD to win; the red looks nicer. I hope they go with clear or black cases and just keep the logo up top. :P

Why would they get rid of blue packaging? You do know what the name of the format is, right?

And I don't see why everyone thinks Sony is being a bunch of "pricks." They made a decision to go with the Blu-ray Disc for the PS3 and this has helped influence Blu-ray sales. I don't know about you, but I personally have not heard Kaz Hirai saying that Sony is comprised of gods, nor have I seen Jack Tretton steal anyone's lunch money. You could look at any successful company and say they act like "pricks," but that doesn't mean they are. In all honesty, where did you hear Howard Stringer say "Haha, we're so awesome, now suck it, Microsoft!"

You know... any movie that ends with "it's finally over" and the hero relaxing, usually concludes with an alien and or monster jumping out / or up... for one final attack before the end. So my best bet is one (or more) of the following "final attacks" from HD-Dvd.

1. HD-Dvd Price Drop, like HUGE DROP. $99 for a stand-alone player and like $20 a movie by the summer time.
2. HD-Dvd built into X-box 360, by Christmas 2008.
3. HD-Dvd signs some 4 year exclusive for the rights of some uber movie franchise, like Star Wars or something.

UIt's not over till every store only carries Blu-Ray. But I will admit, that if the second rumor of Macs possibily using Blu-Ray comes true... it'd just be another huge stab to HD-Dvd.

Wait a second- Wait a Sec! "Lets have (Matrix / Batman~) now!"?! Why the hell didn't warner release those two along with the Dud format when it came out near the beginning of last year?! That company never was anything but format neutral till now, so why didn't either every come out in the first place? "300" came out in both formats at the same time! They really- Really, need to straighten themselves out or the shifting towards Blue will be painful and loaded ~online at least~ w/ vitriol for all the potential F-ups till the end of May.

Matrix didnt come to Blu Ray because of ''software limitations''. They probly got some cash for putting it on HD-DVD first as well. But with 1.1 profile there's nuthin stoppin it from coming out now.

For the people that DONT think they werent bought off: you are naive. OFCOURSE they DID!

Every company in both the HD-DVD camp and Blu-Ray
camp were bought off. The company simply has to say "negotiate" with sony/toshiba and say "we are sort of leaning your way, but we arent sure yet *wink* *wink* then sony/toshiba will "this" help you make a decision *wink* *wink* why ofcourse it will!!!

Besides Engadget's version says they were

so its only reasonable that they were.

So what's with the dumb attacks on the 360? Say what you want about Bluray and HD-DVD. Movies is not what the consoles are soley about. They are about games. And last time I checked, the 360 is the leader in the next gen war.
I know you all are excited because you can have some more movies to watch on your PS3. I realize youre still waiting for killer games for it, better online, etc. That is what 360 owners do have. And Ill take that over a movie player any time.

PS3 has plenty of good games and great online, mind you. And also, last time I checked, it was the Wii that was winning the console war, so please take your attacks and use them elsewhere.

OK...I don't understand this. I have all 3 systems. I got the ps3 because I got a good deal, and it had a blu-ray player. The first movie I bought recently was the Bladerunner final cut. If blu-ray has so much memory, why is it on 5 discs? HD-DVD is also 5 discs? I can't figure this one out. I would have expected everything to be on one disc if blu-ray can hold 50 gigs or whateve they say it holds. Looks like studios are still pressing the same content on the same # of discs, regardless of the format. So....to me I see no difference between the two.

Maybe the studio found the notion of five videos on one disc (imagine the selection menu) a bit cheap-ish looking, maybe it has to do with the economics of production? Anyway, my guess is, there's no way more than two films will ever be on one disc as long as they are including every foreign soundtrack and audio commentary they can get a hold on. Plus, on Blu-ray all audio can be uncompressed, which will easily eat up all those extra Gbytes.

So, faced with the choice of reducing the amount of discs to three at most, it looks easier to go for five anyway. It might even be more consumer friendly that way: you can borrow out single discs to your friends and keep the version of choice for your movie party at the weekend.

Well unlike the Paramount payoff, this has been flatly denied by the studio in question, so it could very well just be sour grapes.
The HD-DVD side just took what is probably a mortal wound and the outcome will strenghten both the Blu-Ray franchise and the spill-over effect for the PS3 greatly. Expect some weeks of sour grapes from the HD DVD supporters out there before the reality of the situation sinks inn.

Oh wow, like, I had no idea Blu-Ray and the color blue were related and that that's why the cases are blue! Way to insult me, I got so owned just there.

I don't give a crap if "blue" is in the title. It makes perfect sense why the cases are blue. I just think it's extremely not clever. It'd be like if every VW bug was designed to look like an actual insect, or every Mustang car had a mane coming out of the top; yes, you can do it, and yes it makes sense, but it's not exactly clever. I can just imagine the brilliant executive who thought that one up. "Hey, guys! And you know how the name is? We'll make the package "blu," too! Haha!"

And did Sony really make the decision to go with Blu-Ray? I was under the impression, rather, that they basically created it themselves. Just like Beta Max, those mini-cds, films on UMD, and whatever MP3 format they tried at - and failed at - in the past. With that kind of track record, it wasn't crazy for people to think they might not win.

In this case, they won because HD-DVD was particularly stupid about pushing their format. It's not a huge win if the competition isn't putting up much of a fight.

Oh, and calling Sony pricks wasn't referring to specific people in the company, but rather the company's public appearance on the whole. If they do care about their customers and are actually a lot of nice people who admit when they're wrong, don't overcharge for their products, and listen to public demand, then they need some new PR people or something.

yes and guess what its not just the name that is blue, the underside is also blue, it also runs on a blue diode, it also runs on blue laser... Thats why they called it blu-ray in the first place.

HD-DVD is called HD-DVD --even though it doesnt run on a red laser-- because it would also make sense. It will sway people because the letters "DVD" is in the name in that order. Very clever of Tosh huh?
