Rumor: Microsoft working on first party sequel for next Xbox console

I have an idea for the next Xbox. Put a port on it that enables you to either plug in you 360 HDD, or plug in a cable to transfer over game saves and DLC(without deleting the data from the HDD). Plus it needs much more BC than the 360 did. I have spent around £1000 on games, accessories, and subs for my 360 already, so by 2010 that will be atleast double. I want to be able to use it, even if in practice I don't actually do so.

I feel that Microsoft's in no position to talk about 5 year life cycles considering they didn't reach it with the original Xbox. If it's in development now, you're looking at a 2010 release. Thus, a 6 year lifecycle for the 360. Would we really be suprised?

this is terrifying news. I know games take a long time to make, but seriously. Unless this secret game is duke nukem forever is this all we have to expect now? Shootan gaem rehashes with an even shinier level of polish for the xbox 720 which wont even be out yet?

I'm not seeing anywhere in the Reuters article that Microsoft repeated says the 360 will outlast a 5 year cycle. Instead, they say they "see potential" and remark what Sony has done. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll follow suit.

If a game is already under development for the next Xbox, then one might think the next console is appearing in another 3 years (give or take).

It really depends on technology. Where it's at, and what can be gained by a new model.

Honestly, this isn't surprising. With some high profile titles nowadays taking upwards of 3 or more years to complete, imagine the added time if the new system isn't even close to finalized, and figuring out how you're going to program for it.

No loading, no spinning disc, more space then anything else...Wouldn't mind Mass Effect 2 filling up 1.6 TBs of space. ;) Blu-ray what? Now that's NEXT GEN!

Don't put a dvd player in it, choose a format that tops the rest in everything, and is actually innovative. HVD FTW!!!! :p

Also you don't need to put a HDD in it either...have the console save the game data on the disc with the game. You only need a small drive for the interface and maybe for movies and demo's, you never have to save the game on anything but the HVD. :D

MS is a company who just entered the console market, especially considering the pedigre of there competition, and yet have come to usurp Sonys presumed authority and give Nintendo a good challenge, it's all in the planning.

The original Xbox was a test, a test to see if they could get not only customer support, but a test to see if they could push online gaming via software to the console front. By combining the best the console and pc markets have to offer, they've done just that, and now Sony dick head fanboys cry out how MS failed that's why they dumped the 360. It's called a learning process.

I don't feel burnt by MS at all, at least as far as there games go, you know, what matters in gaming. While I have 30 360, more if you count arcade, i'm still searching for a reason to buy a PS3. While im enjoying online games and services the other two scoffed at, I laugh at Sonys attempt to "catch up" and rather badly might I add.

My only problem with the 360 is the hardware. It's not that it was poorly desighned, rather, it's that it's made by the cheapest bidder in an effort to keep costs down under $600. They understood that having a great gpu and good entry cost meant more people would buy it and more developers could easier understand the hardware and seeing the hardware sales would be more apt to spend resources on games for said system. Case in point, 360 hardware does have major problems, less now but, even with the PS3's reliability, who's buying them and what the fuck are they playing on it? Spiderman 3 on blu-ray?

Not to mention it seems all you Sony fuck tards have amnesia when it comes to the PS2s hardware issues that Sony NEVER addressed, admitted or took care of, hell for that fact even the PS1 was prone to issues. Remember turning it upside down to get the shit to work? Probably not because most of you were still shittin in diapers.

MS is kickin Sonys ass for more than one reason, but the main one is obvious, better games. Gamers want games not Trojan horse blu-ray players with crap games. You mean to tell me as a gamer your gonna spend that money on PS3 and after all the shit that Sony talked, not have shit to show for it? Fuck paying for potential, im paying for a game machine I can actually, you know, play games on.

Undoubtedly one of you idiots will say "well if you add this that and the other, then the 360 is the same price or more" to that I say go fuck yourself. It's about choice. I want a game machine that's what I got. I want to go HD movies, I can download them off of live or buy the add on, so how do I lose exactly? The answer is I don't, and while your waiting for the next promised great thing in gaming from Sony, i'll be playing dope as games on my 360 or Wii and downloading movies and shows, in HD, as I see, fit, not because Sony says so. Sonys days as console king are over, period. They have fallen victim to the same arrogance and hubrice that Nintendo fell to and payed for. The difference is Nintendo learned and got there shit together while Sonys still thinks their shit don't stink.

Since when did gaming turn into everything but gaming as its' main focus? When you point to the PS3's strong points as being blue-ray player and blu-ray games I must question that persons intent.

Gaming is about gaming, period. Remember Sony saying that the psp would pull gaming out of the "handheld ghettos" and for all that shit talking they are getting there asses kicked straight the fuck up. Not only by the Wii but the DS lite as well.

It's about games people. If the storage capacity for a blue ray disc is so important thant why aren't we seeing that in the games. Who cares if you can have bigger prettier games if their bigger prettier games that still suck?

MS and Nintendo did the right thing. MS focuses on games and have done an excellent job, not promiising the sun and moon and not delivering (sony) but by giving us great gaming experiences from day one, and continuing to do so, with the option of movies etc. that you can either download or buy and hdd drive for.

Nintendo said fuck the world and lets do what we do best, be humble and make fun, affordable gaming experiences with an affinity for Japanese quirkiness/gameing style. The result is an ass whoopin.

Now the 360 isn't selling well in Japan, but it doesn't really need to. Japan isn't were the moneys at and that markedt is largely being controlled by cel phone gaming and handhelds. The real battle is in the USA and Europe. Europe is mostly Sony fans but 360 is still doing it's thing and in the states it's not even a question of what we like more. It's a marathon not a sprint and MS has got the legs. Sony isn't done by any stretch of the imagination and as a GAMER, I can only hope that Sony not dominating the market, makes it better for all gamers as it will force them to do something for gamers that's makes it worth our gaming dollars. Fuck all the tech give me great games without all the smack talking and i'll buy your damn system. Real gamers want games, not empty promises, insults to our intelligence and blue-ray movies. Bitches.

now, if the game is in development, that means they already have a programming strategy, which in turn means they already have a beta system up and running. otherwise they have seers and profits working behind the scenes telling them how to do everything. sony is on it's 3rd home console and 1st portable. M$ is on it's second and working towards it's 3rd. granted M$ didn't have the luxury of entering the market during the 32 bit era like sony did. but that doesn't change the horrid strategy behind dumping the 1st console flat when the 2nd gen entered the picture. sony didn't do that between their 1st and 2nd, nor did the big N, ever. rushing a faulty system to market and killing off the old was a bad thing to do to consumers, ie. us. could the 360 live another 2-3 years, maybe, if they finally fix the rrod probs. how much longer are you guys gonna stand by a system that is problematic? how much faith will you have in a next gen system if the current is buggy until it's laid to rest? i know i won't have much.

Not sure if it was mentioned but this was also stated in the latest OXM. The game is a Bethesda IP and is an MMORPG and it will be 2-3 years before this game is even close to being finished..

I'm so tired of people hearing a rumor and then blowing it out of proportion, like MS is going to replace the 360 in 6 months or something.. Let me say again this is YEARS AWAY! EGM and their rumors about MS have all turned out false.

I had an xbox and don't feel burnt as all. My 360 has meet and exceeded my expectations for gaming this gen while i'm still waiting for that reason to get a second job for a PS3. You can pay for future potential if you want, i'll wait for the proof in the pudding. "Just give it time" is what you shils say, yet your missing out on great games (if your a fanbly and refuse to buy a 360 or Wii) while you wait for your potential. Everyone seems to be missing the main point here...if this is true, the next Xbox console is already well into development. Shouldn't MS be making this "killer" game for it's current console? Do they have so little faith in it that they have bypassed it for their next gen console already? What about 360 supporters? Don't they deserve the next "big" game from MS? Oh well, time to buy a new system to play it on, but not to worry, I'm sure MS won't stop development on the 360, or stop making it's AAA titles for it...nah they'd never...oh wait!

MS said that all 1st party Xbox franchises would get 360 versions. So far Rallisport Challenge hasn't gotten one and neither has MechAssult.

I am sorry but this is to much of a rumor to comment on, so I can't give an opinion. If a new MS system comes out way to early some people have a right to be pissed, but if this is some sort of crap "well of course" rumor about a video game company developing another system all this rigmarole is for nothing. The only thing that is said is that a first party game is being created for a new iteration of MS Xbox and it is not the 360, it doesn't say the important part of when this game is supposed to debut, hence all of this talk is for nothing.

I think the name for the next xbox should be XBX-5 (or XbX-5). They're just numbers, so who cares if you skip one or two. We know the next Playstation will be the PS4, so your average joe will think the XBX-5 is better than the PS4.

Do that, add in a 200-250 gig hard drive, a video input for DVR, and I'd be sold. Instead of plugging your satellite or cable directly into your tv, you plug it into your XBX-5 with DVR, who would complain?
You get HD upscaling, and a free/cheap DVR service.

Add in a dvd/hd burner, and you can't lose. Imagine downloading a movie online, and being able to burn it to (1) disc. Sure there would be some DRM, but the potential would be huge. As long as you limited it to one burn, that would really help people embrace digital downloads, without scaring away movie studios.
You could have digital downloads, and physical media, without the hassle.

You've got every electronics company's dream, a set top box, with DVR, movie/tv show downloads, and plays games, and can burn movies, all in one box. It would be hard to beat.

But it also have to be cheap...
