Devil May Cry 4 for PS3 gets achievements, required installation [update]

X360 owners really dislike the 25 minutes because their machine will die in any second and they can't afford to wait.

I'm not that interested in action games anyway, I'll go play Disgaea 3 instead(Release on the same day).

I think the best point against this is that if a hard drive is used then there's little use for extra storage from the Blu-Ray.

Give a console a huge hard drive and you can release your games on good old fashioned CDs and not have to worry about swapping them out. All that's needed is a mandatory install. (The next XBox will be the XBox360MegaHardDrive, will still use dual layer DVDs but each game will require an install onto your terabyte hard drive. The funny thing is, aside from the lame joke, my spell check accepts XBox360MegaHardDrive as a correct spelling)

I don't think it's an acceptable practice in console gaming. And definitely shouldn't become common practice. If this kind of thing does become common I think there'll be a good deal of 20g and 40g PS3 owners that'll be pretty red faced.

I seriously doubt it'll become commonly mandatory. But it'd be a good way for Sony to push their models with larger HDs.

Alright, a 25 minute load time may not exactly be ideal. Whine and cry about it all you want, but look at it this way how long did it take you to read all or most of the comments in this post??? How much time did you spend just on Joystiq today reading the stories? All during this time guess what? You could have been installing Devil May Cry, atleast that's how I see it.

ps3 has to do that because the 5gb installation makes it run faster than any other console yet and with this one the 5gb make we dont have to wait for download times unlike 360 users which needs a fucking month of replays before using that

Because when consoles drop optical drives next gen, you're going to have to spend at least an hour or more downloading a game on to your system. In fact, installing at least part of the game off a disk should be mandatory for ALL PS3 games this gen to prepare developers for their next gen development. They need to learn not to rely on optical drives.

Installation should be mandatory for ALL PS3 games.

Blu-ray discs should just be used to transfer the game to the hard drive (in large 1GB-5GB blocks as needed), not to be read off of during the game. This makes load times extremely short and data access a lot faster. You might have long waits while transferring the next block but it's worth it. The hard drive can hold several blocks from different games. This is actually pretty impressive on Capcom's part. I think they're the first to realize this.

This gives the PS3 a huge advantage over Xbox 360 games which can't expect a hard drive. This is what the GTAIV developers were most likely referring to when they said the Xbox 360 development was making things hard. Sorry, Xbots, whoever designed your system was an idiot.

Just because you're installing apart of the game onto the drive, doesn't change the fact that blu-ray holds X amount of data. It's only doing this too to speed up load times, the bluray disk still holds the same amount. I don't get what some of you guys are crying over, the fact that the game requires you to use up HD Space, because bluray holds up to 50 gigs? It still does, it's just copying part of that onto the HD because the reading times are ridiculously slow. This has nothing to do with the storage, it's all about the drive speed. So if you're gonna complain, atleast complain right.

Why is it mandatory on a (I assume) linear action game?

Shouldn't "mandatory install" be held for games that would really benefit from it, for example sandbox games like Oblivion/GTA/Mercenaries?

Fuck, since the fucking Dreamcast, I have played tons of great games (most made by Nintendo) that have zero to mear seconds of load times. It's called memory management, you need good programmers to pull that off. Apparently, Capcom does not have any of the sort.

Seriously, this is stupid. Imagine if if you bought a DVD of your fav movie home, popped it in, and had to wait 25 minutes to install data? You would say fuck that! Hay, in the mean time you can wash the dishes, fuck your boyfriend in the ass or something while you wait right? No, you would yell fuck that!

Hay Capcom! If you had to do a pre-load time, why the fuck could you not do it like the tray and play in Halo 2? You know, have the game install WHILE you are fucking play it. Wow, what a concept! This is what happens when you hire programmers and engineers from Kindergarten!

If DMC4 is loaded with load times that actually affects gameplay, then I am all for installation. I mean, playing a game right when I buy it isn't that bad of a sacrifice. I don't have to play the game RIGHT away as if the world depended on it. Hell, I play a lot of PC games and I normally choose the full installation option rather than the minimal installation whereas music and other things are loaded off of a disc.

Also, to Anticrawl, why do you keep insisting that Capcom added the load time because of bad coding? From what I understand from games that run off of dics, they ALL have load times, regardless of coding.

The game isn't even out so if it was bad coding, then the Xbox 360 should have a long load time as well or Capcom would had added an installation option for Xbox users who had an HDD. The only thing I can think of that doesn't have load times are cartridges or stuff on your harddrive. Like others said, it has nothin to do with storage of the DVD, BD, HD rom. It has to do with speed of the drive and possibly ram.

One can test this out by playing a PC game using a 2x drive and than a 40x cd rom drive. You will notice that the latter loads faster than the 2x drive.


Personally, it seems that ppl will try to spin anything to make their version of a game on one system better than the other. If 360 had the installation time while the ps3 doesn't, I am sure the same ppl who are into this whole game war will be on opposite sides; I mean, I would see someone who bitches about installation time on the ps3 and how superior the xbox is for not having it, would praise it if the 360 has it and not the ps3. i wouldn"t be suprised if you guys argue that one version of a game is better than another for having a colored instruction manual than a black and white one

The thing that really bugs me about this is that it takes so long. 40 minutes to copy 5GB? WTF? I can copy 5GB over the network in less time then that, how can it possibly take that long to do it from local storage? (Incidentally I can also burn a dual layer 8GB DVD in less then 40 minutes.)

I hope there is some optimization left to be had there.

As for the rest of the comments... putting some of the game on the Hard Drive is a good thing. The HD has drastically faster seek times and better throughput then any optical media on the market. Given that blu-ray isn't very good in either department, you'll probably see more of this from PS3 games in the future.

Of course once its installed, it should give far better performance then the 360 version simply because reading from the HD is so much faster then reading off a DVD. It'd be nice if developers had the option of doing the same thing on the 360, but Microsoft screwed up big time with the Core model, and now we're stuck having to pretend there isn't really a HD when developing games.

For all you uneducated people who somehow think the PS3 has to inherently have longer load times just cuz you mistakenly believe the PS3 is a piece of crap need to play Uncharted and be schooled... hard!

No load times, no long ass install... just a well designed game that takes advantage of the PS3 hardware properly.

I KEEP hearing people question the OWNAGE of the blu ray.

Let Me show you why The Xbox 360 is NOT a REAL next gen console.

It uses 8GB dule layer dvd's, You have to buy a hd dvd drive seperately + games arnt made for its hd dvd drive.
It MAINLY uses 720pi WHich Is BARELY next-Gen.

360 now has native 1080pi support Yeh BUT You cant make games with 1080pi detail graphics fit on a 8gb disk.

PS3 has Blu-Ray Which Is AT THE MOMENT 50gb with a projected size in the future of 200GB!!!.

You can easily fit 1080pi quality games on a 50GB disk.

SOOn the xbox 360 will Have games that require 4 SEPERATE DISKS whereas the ps3 will need only one disk.

Now back to topic, It Installes To thre hard drive to IMPROVE GAMEPLAY, You miss the fundemental point that a game is basicly a story, The 360 tells you a story that laggs and stops every 30min, The ps3 just tells you the story.

When i play a game i play hard to get to the end of a level where normally it pits you against some kind of formiddible boss Then .................................................................It finally loads the boss fight, With the ps3 i can seamlessly go from one part of the game to another, i can charge at the boss straight from the end of the last level without haveing to wait at a loading screen.

O and HALO 3 LOADING TIMES.

I play on xbx live loads as i have both an xbx 360 and a ps3... Xbox live is nicer online than on ps3 but when i play a game such as halo 3 i set up what kinda game i want then.....Load for about 3 min YES 3min befor i can start searching for a game let alone play a game, when i play the game i have to wait for the map to load AGAIN.

The hd install is good(better if it was optional) because it takes advantage that the ps3 comes standard with a hd whereas the xbox 360 does not. So if i buy it for ps3 i get an alltogether nicer more enjoyable gameing experince.

REMEMBER gameing is about PLAYING A GAME FOR FUN NOT BEING BETTER THEN SOMEONE ELSE.
