Fable 2, Alan Wake and more confirmed for 2008
Microsoft Games chief Don Mattrick has confirmed (or, in some cases, reaffirmed) via a memo a handful of exclusive titles to arrive on Xbox 360 in 2008. The list of assuredly not canceled titles include Halo Wars, Too Human, Fable 2, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction and "several exciting yet-to-be-announced titles."
Following the list of 2008 exclusives, Mattrick continues to say that "Xbox 360 will be home to the next versions of great franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil ... Madden and FIFA." We're not sure if he meant to imply Resident Evil 5 is due out this year, but it's certainly a suspicious line. Other than this year, no schedule was given as to the release of these titles, although we now get a sense of what Microsoft feels will keep gamers happy in this post-Halo 3 world.

I would be so impressed to see a corporate guy admit they will be releasing several unexciting yet-to-be-announced titles.
rom @ Jan 7th 2008 5:56PM
"several exciting yet-to-be-announced titles."
So when exactly can we hear about these?
DemonGSides @ Jan 7th 2008 10:05PM
When they release.
Mr Khan @ Jan 7th 2008 5:57PM
No, RE5 is still TBA 2009
Still, a respectable list, it doesn't beat PS3's TBA 2008 (and we still know nothing about Wii's), but it certainly isn't lacking in goodness
jsn @ Jan 7th 2008 6:02PM
because most of the ps3's list is 2007 titles that were all delayed till 2008....
jagowar @ Jan 7th 2008 7:00PM
i think the fact that they havent announced the full slate yet gives even more chance to catch the ps3. you add a gears of war 2 to that list and for me it becomes better than the ps3's lineup. then again im really excited for halo wars.
Geist @ Jan 7th 2008 6:02PM
Wait, wait, wait. Are we talking console exclusives here? Because Alan Wake is coming to the PC. It bugs me when people still call it exclusive.
On that note, I want that game so hard.
LaughingTarget @ Jan 7th 2008 6:06PM
Yet, simultaneously, we hear hoards of console owners bitch about how expensive it is to own a gaming PC. It's exclusive as in you have to buy a Microsoft product to play it. Sony doesn't get to enjoy the game.
Jeff @ Jan 7th 2008 6:17PM
Microsoft has every right to call something also coming out on PC exclusive, imho, if its a GFW title not coming to Mac/linux.
Alan Wake sounds badass, but why is it Vista only? If it's also coming out for Xbox it has to work in Dx9... because Xbox doesn't do DX10.
Moreover, when is Microsoft gonna release/announce the Vista only Halo 3 and Halo Wars ports? Hate to admit it, but I'd be sold.
Geist @ Jan 7th 2008 6:50PM
Jeff: Yeah, but that's like Sony saying a game coming only to PS2 and PS3 is an exclusive title. I mean, I suppose MS has a point that they can do that, but I'd at least like some clarification, ie it's an MS-exclusive, not 360-exclusive. Eh.
Also, is it Vista-only? Sucks, I'll have to wait for the crack to play it on XP.
ColossalHat @ Jan 7th 2008 7:10PM
"Alan Wake sounds badass, but why is it Vista only?"
It's part of the scheme MS has always pulled when they make a new version of windows. They make the good-looking (not graphically but good-looking as in fun gameplay) games exclusively for the newest windows platform and when enough good games (other software too I suppose) come out, they cut the supports out from under the previous version and all but kill off the version that came out two iterations ago.
beholdapalehorse @ Jan 7th 2008 6:18PM
How is the 360's list "not as impressive" as Sonys list, of which only 2 games (metal gear and GT5) are ever mentioned?
Regardless, it will be a great year for gamers, 360, PS3, Wii and DS. I would love to know what the unanounced games will be that the artcle refers to. Another good year for 360, now if I can find a Wii i'll have the 2 consoles I need to keep me going until next gen.
colin @ Jan 7th 2008 6:37PM
brace yourself for a list ...
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jan 7th 2008 6:54PM
yeah I don't get it either. In terms of number of exclusives, I think the 360's lineup is definitely better than the ps3's.
But yeah 2008 is gonna be a great year for all gamers.
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Jan 7th 2008 8:07PM
You forgot Little Big Planet. It's also mentioned a lot.
I'm with you though, just comparing list to list, MS is doing okay. But everything I hear from the press is that there are a lot more Sony titles being shown (like Afrika) that the public isn't seeing. So perhaps Sony does have an ace up their sleeve.
BJ Sisco @ Jan 7th 2008 8:56PM
When does Castle Crashers for the 360 come out?
Farseer (GDI) @ Jan 8th 2008 12:48AM
Dude - I was just thinking about Castle Crashers today. I am really, really excited for that game. I think I'll go play some Alien Hominid while I wait for them to give us a release date...
B1gC72 @ Jan 8th 2008 2:27AM
i dont know if the 360 list is not as impressive as the PS3 lineup since 360 has some hard hitters in Fable 2, Halo Wars, Too Human, and Alan Wake. i also didnt know the new Splinter Cell was 360 exclusive. either way, it's a "too each their own" type thing. im really excited about alot of the PS3 games but that doesnt mean everybody is. i dont play MGS for example but i cant wait to get my hands on GT5. i think that the main factor in this list war is that the PS3 heavy hitters are finally hitting, not unlike the 360's second year. so im not going to get into list mode (lol) but as a PS3 owner, i could care less about the 360 line up, and im sure 360 owners feel the same way about PS3. so i think this whole "my line up is better" fight is absolutely pointless. the main point that everyone is missing is that PS3 is finally strengthening it's line up, so its getting some attention for that, while 360 already has a strong line up. just a case of people stating opinions as fact is all.
bloatedfish @ Jan 8th 2008 6:04AM
"i could care less about the 360 line up"
It's I couldn't care less about the 360 line up. I hate seeing people type I could care less all the time it really grinds my gears.
colinbell @ Jan 7th 2008 6:32PM
Well you a remember a console that had some of the greatest exclusives possible - Half Life 2, Halo 1+2, Doom 3, Thief 3, Riddick, KOTOR, Far Cry. And yet it flopped - unbelievable.
The key thing here is not merely that all these "exclusives" were also available on PC. Its also that these are shooter games many gamers would prefer to play on PC with mkb and that multiplayer is free.
And its not as if you specially buy a PC for games. Almost everyone buys a PC these days - An 8600 and a gig extra RAM costs maybe $150 extra, and would play all games except CRYSIS at least on medium specs. - Would you pay $600 on 360 + Live - or $150 extra on a better PC?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jan 7th 2008 6:44PM
i seriously hope you dont think the original lolbox had better exclusives then the ps2 did, or even the gamecube did (hard to argue with the few games nintendo ALWAYS relys on). It flopped precisely because of the halo effect, people regarded it as a 1 game, 1 franchise system combined with a poor marketing plan.
it's almost like microsoft was shocked by halo's success and was just like "fuck it we're going to pimp it to rake in the dollars" and just forgot about everything else
and btw two of the titles you mentioned came out on pc first.
samfish @ Jan 7th 2008 8:38PM
For me, last gen was
GC > PS2 > Xbox
in terms of exclusives.
...although I unfairly count the Viewtiful Joe games as exclusives.
john paul @ Jan 7th 2008 6:24PM
i want all those and gears 2, gta 4, and dmc4 and many others(do u really want me to list em?)
and im a happy* gamer
*happy but broke.....
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Jan 7th 2008 6:28PM
Good to hear, I can't wait for Alan Wake or Fable 2 (I liked the original, yeah I said it)
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jan 7th 2008 6:59PM
another game that doesn't really deserve the hate it gets. Fable was a solid game, and fun to play. Sure it sucks that it didn't exactly live up to the promises made by Molyneux(god I don't know how to spell his last name). But it was still damn fun.
MegaSnort @ Jan 7th 2008 6:29PM
Molyneux comes with some pretty cool game concepts but has yet to execute one of visions successfully thus far.
LaughingTarget @ Jan 7th 2008 6:32PM
Classic feature creep developer. Lionhead has absolutely miserable project management and have a problem of continually expanding the scope of the game until it reaches a critical mass where it has to be released due to funding issues and nothing works right.
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Jan 7th 2008 6:37PM
I don't know, I myself had (and still do have) a LOT of fun with Fable and The Movies, even if neither where nothing near what they could have been.
Mr Khan @ Jan 7th 2008 7:47PM
@ LaughingTarget
I'd say its the reverse. Molyneux will have a titanic vision of a game, but reality will slowly dwindle it into a game thats still a helluva fun title, but not the glorious vision originally channeled from wherever Molyneux gets his ideas
XanthouS @ Jan 7th 2008 6:39PM
lolexclusives
tmacairjordan87 @ Jan 7th 2008 6:40PM
oh yeah i remember when alan wake was confirmed for last year as well, we'll see how this turns out i dont put any weight on it.
As for fable 2, right now i'm not impressed on what's been shown. I remember molyneux saying he had 4 big announcements regarding the game and so far we have the inclusion of a dog and one button combat....whoopie. But then again what should I have expected from someone who's known for overhyping things.
How exactly is one button combat a good thing?? hell if we go by that then friggin dynasty warriors has more advanced combat with two buttons!
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Jan 7th 2008 6:44PM
It's not the idea of one-button concept, it's the way it is being done.
We haven't even seen much of actual gameplay, just tests whipped together for previews.
Superstar90 @ Jan 7th 2008 6:49PM
Not to mention 3rd party stuff like NG2 and GTA 4, I'm liking the 360's 2008.
Geist @ Jan 7th 2008 6:53PM
I wish I wish I wish I could smack you through the internets.
SO HARD.
SpekOpz @ Jan 7th 2008 6:56PM
I can't wait to see how Too Human turns out. I really have high hopes for that game :)
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Jan 7th 2008 6:58PM
Alan Wake is probably the biggest reason I want a 360. But I don't want to go through all of the problems I've heard so much about.
Such a shame.
Cyro @ Jan 7th 2008 7:01PM
Fable 2, Project Offset, GTA4, Alan Wake, Ninja Gaiden 2, Devil May Cry 4, Burnout Paradise, Lost Odyssey, Supreme Commander, Army of Two, Condemmed 2, Rainbow six vegas 2, Starwars unleashed, Splinter cell conviction, Saints Row 2, Too Human, Resident evil 5.
These sound like interesting games to me.. All for the 360 this year.
samfish @ Jan 7th 2008 8:43PM
RE5 is projected to be 2009.
Wilhelm @ Jan 8th 2008 4:36AM
About half of those games are on the PS3 as well though.
janai @ Jan 7th 2008 7:37PM
re: "Xbox 360 will be home to the next versions of great franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil ... Madden" [etc]:
Personally, I'd vote for Resident Evil: Madden. Imagine the possibilities.
Leonidas @ Jan 7th 2008 8:09PM
no Banjo Threeie...
tmacairjordan87 @ Jan 7th 2008 8:12PM
ya never know, gotta keep hoping :-\
flameofdoom666 @ Jan 7th 2008 11:56PM
When I saw your comment, I got really sad.
That is the game I want the most from the 360 in 2008.
samfish @ Jan 7th 2008 8:41PM
To my tastes, the 360 has Ninja Gaiden 2 and MAYBE Banjo 3.
PS3 has LittleBigPlanet...and I'm increasingly mixed on that until I see some actual gameplay.
Of course, I'd really like to know what Platinum Games/Seeds/Clover is up to and for which console before I really declare one system as being more favorable over the other for the year.
ark_v2 @ Jan 7th 2008 9:16PM
I hated Fable, but Alan Wake looks awesome! Can't wait for it.
Pip @ Jan 7th 2008 9:44PM
The 2008 line up for the PS3 doesn't look all that hot anymore, really. Some good games, but I think the 360 will match every single one and have a pile more available.
When can we have our Rez HD?
Batzarro @ Jan 7th 2008 9:48PM
I already knew Fable 2 was coming in 08, fools! The real question is wether ther'll be 60+ bucks in mah pocket that day. Also, I wanna know about those "unananunced" games coming this year.
As for the list: I don't really know the list for PS3(and it's too late here for me to be looking for my magnifying glasses) but the 360's looks sweet.
"Well you a remember a console that had some of the greatest exclusives possible - Half Life 2, Halo 1+2, Doom 3, Thief 3, Riddick, KOTOR, Far Cry. And yet it flopped - unbelievable."
Flopped? Unbelievably? It outlasted expectations as far as I'm concerned! Since then, when Microsoft releases a console, no one wonders if it will be "the next 3do"! That's SOME kinda success...
Also, remember "exclusives" is an abreviation of "console exclusives". PC and handhelds don't count. They are not HOME consoles. Maybe next you'll say a game isn't exclusive because you remember it, and you can play it in your mind! So you'll ask us not to call Ninja Gaiden 2 exclusive, cause aside from coming to 360 it'll be available in your imagination.
Prince King @ Jan 7th 2008 10:36PM
microsoft has released one system since xbox.
what do you mean "Since then, when Microsoft releases a console, no one wonders if it will be "the next 3do"! "
flameofdoom666 @ Jan 7th 2008 11:59PM
I hope that one of the "unananunced" games is Banjo Kazooie 3. Ide settle for Conker 2, or even Kameo 2. :-)
bigsim @ Jan 8th 2008 6:28AM
Man, I want Alan Wake so bad. If it's a quarter the game Max Payne was, then I'll die a happy man.
...Well not really, but you get the picture.
