The fanboys on this site kill me. As an owner of both, I can say the Xbox took about a year to get anything good (Gears of War). Anything before that was just bc people were starving for next gen. Here is a solid list for the platform...

PS3:

Exclusives out now:
Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank Future: ToD, Warhawk, Eye of Judgement, heavenly sword.
Downloadable exclusives out now:
Flow, Everyday Shooter, super stardust HD, Calling all cars
Third party timed exclusives out now:
Unreal Tournament 3
Third party multiplatform:
Call of duty 4, assassins creed, guitar hero 3, rock band, lego star wars, anything sports.
Third party exclusives in the future:
Gran Tourismo 5, Metal Gear Sold 4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Syphon Filter, God of War 3, Haze, the next ICO or Shadow of the Colossus

Xbox is great. It has some solid games, but will have a lot more competition now that developers have figured out how to program for it (except EA). PS3 has a more varied library and offers FPS AND! other types of games too.

People should just ease up and take each system for what it is.

Damn, you missed out on a mess of solid games in that year before Gears came out (off the top of my head):
Condemned
Kameo
PGR3
Dead Rising
C0D2
R* Table Tennis
Geometry Wars
Tomb Raider: Legend
GRAW

Lucky for you, you can pick most of these up on the cheap, which should be good for getting the taste of foot out of your mouth...

Condemned - Have it for the PC. Really intense. Wasn't really next gen.
Kameo - Nobody liked this game. Get serious. File this under the "Starving for next gen" category
PGR3 - Solid title
Dead Rising - Good game, nothing amazing here. Zombies are amazing, but something about the way it was executed didn't keep me involved in the story. Take out the attempt at a story make it a zombie killing download. Series is going multi-plat.
C0D2 - Awesome game. Have it on the PC.
R* Table Tennis - Nope.
Geometry Wars - Heard good things.
Tomb Raider: Legend - Great game. Have it for the PC.
GRAW - Pretty good ... sequel is much improved.

Foot doesn't taste too bad.

I would correct that to say the Xbox took a year to get something that was both exclusive and show-stoppingly epic

But good games were to be had prior to Gears

Gears of War was a great game but far from "show-stoppingly? epic". Now it is on PC (MS game). It really wasn't that crazy of a game. It wasn't exactly epic due to its length, as well.

The same can be said for PS3 though ... which is my point entirely. It took a year to get a "show-stoppingly" good game, but it had many good games prior to Uncharted:

Resistance*, Motorstorm*, Virtual Fighter 5*, Fight Night R3, Oblivion, Tom Clancy games, NBA Street Homecourt, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (I know it was on Xbox but this version should be played by fans of the original). Many of those later ones are multi-platform titles but good nonetheless.

Between the games occupying my time right now (CoD4, Rock Band, Mario Galaxy), the ones releasing this spring/summer (MGS4, GT5:P, DMC4, Mario Kart, Brawl), and titles I haven't had the time to play through (Ratchet, Uncharted, Metroid Prime 3) I'll have more than enough to keep me occupied until LBP. Can't friggn wait!

No seriously. Any 360 owner who is currently playing Alan Wake can talk shit about PS3 games being delayed.

PS3 has two anticipated exclusives (GT5P and MGS) in the first half of 2008. 360 has zero.

It's the first half of the year, it's how these things work.

Alan Wake? Who even cares about that game at this point?

The PS3 is well known for it's delays. That's what happens when your only big exclusive games get pushed back a year or two.

I personally wouldn't buy a $400-500 system just for another racing game and an over-hyped stealth game, especially if I had to wait a year+ just to play them, but that's just me, I guess.

Good thing that those aren't the only solid games coming then isn't it? Plus, if you're into HD movies the PS3 is still the only profile 2.0 capable BR player on the market. And with HD DVD a dead man walking now with Warner going Blu the PS3 is a great value at $400. Granted, not everyone is interested in HD movies, but that argument certainly more valid that your lame argument about buying a system for 2 games... totally ignoring the games already out and the other games upcoming.

Vidikron:
PS3 is only profile 1.1. And it's not the only 1.1 player. There are no profile 2.0 BD players right now. 2.0 brings internet access, which I do not want on my disc player anyway. I'm not saying I don't value it, I say I explicitly want my disc player to not have it.

Content providers (disc makers) did the worst stuff with the "cannot fast forward now" codes on DVDs, they make us watch 8 shitty previews to see the movie we paid for. The only thing that stops them from making it worse is that word would get around that the disc isn't worth buying if it had 20 unskippable previews in front. Well, with internet access in there, they'll make it not show the previews until they update their website. So they'll wait until they sell 5 million copies of the disc and then turn on huge unskippable ads.

When you buy a disc that contacts the internet, you never know what you are getting. They could completely deactivate the disc remotely if they want at a future date. I don't want internet access on my disc player.

@LS2/LS7

That's why I said 2.0 "capable". It's 1.1 now (1 of only a few available), but the only main requirements for 2.0 are the ability to go online and 1 GB of internal storage. The PS3 meets all the requirements for 2.0 and is the only player currently on the market that does. Much like profile 1.1, Sony will make the PS3 2.0 compliant via a firmware update as soon as 2.0 movies get close to hitting store shelves.

I also have an HD DVD player and I do agree that the internet stuff is largely overrated. I don't care about the ability to vote and polls and such and I can already download trailers via the Live Marketplace and PSN. But if you want a BR player that is largely future proof, the PS3 is the only player right now that makes sense. None of the other players out now can do 2.0 now or ever.

I am not sure if this is true but I heard it was to add a story mode and make the game more fun if you are playing by your self.

I think this is good news. Because by then more people will own a PS3 and so the game will sell really well.

Please.. why do you people always offer us PS3 owners your pity?
I am having a blast playing Warhawk w/Omega Dawn expansion, COD4, Uncharted, Rock Band, Super Stardust HD, Assassin's Creed and even still the occasional round of Fight Night Round 3. When I'm not gaming I still find use for the system by streaming movies and music from my PC to my living room. I mean if you really want to feel sorry for me let it be for the fact that my copy of 'skate.' is even more broken than yours and that EA will never fix it. ::sigh::

As for the future.. I have DMC4, Condemned 2, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Killzone 2, LBP, GTA4, Hot Shots Golf 5, MGS4, GT5 and more to look forward to.

This selection is only a reflection of my personal interests but as for comments about GT and MGS.
Well yeah Gran Turismo is sterile and a bit unexciting.. but that never seems to matter once the game drops because it's always the best racing sim out there and eats up tons of my time regardless of it's lack of excitement.

And as for MGS.. well anyone who isn't a believer doesn't have much credit as a critic.. people who think MGS2 was bad only show their lack of ability to understand such a brilliant example of what video games can be. I have no doubt in my mind that when MGS4 hits it'll be one of the greatest games of all time and anyone who doubts this really hasn't given the series a proper chance.

So really.. save your pity for these people.. the people that aren't sharp enough to get the story.. or patient enough to experience the brilliant design work and attention to detail that are hallmarks of a Hideo Kojima designed title.

This is why Sony can say dumb shit they say because some of you are so damn gullable.

First and formost you should be slapped if you have the nerve to say that the 360 didn't have great games to play before Gears came out, that's fanboy revisionist history at it's finest. Just because you got suckered into buying a PS3 doesn't mean that 360 owners got screwed. While your watching movies on blue-ray i'll be playing awesome games that keep on coming, and downloading the same damn movies in HD, with few exceptions.

Secondly, there are allready a butt load of games to play on 360 and great ones coming out steadily, most of the AAA's haven't gotten release dates this year yet, with the exception of Ninja Gaiden, a title that I want a hell of alot more than MGS4. You mean to tell me that you bought the PS3 to wait almost 2 fuckin years to play potential with 2 damn games? But what Ratchet and drakes and., shut that shit up. Good games they might be but you didn't buy a PS3 to play mediocre games and you know it.

Everyone of the the PS3's games out now, that I can go buy is good at best and even worse not selling because people aren't dumb. Insulting your customers with the type of dumbass statements that Sonys made over the last couple of years regarding the PS3 and PSP, you had better damn sure have some kick ass games and they don't, point fuckin blank.

Being a GAMER first, i'll wait till Sony stops talking shit, gets there act together and gives me a reason to buy a PS3. Fuck blue-ray movies, lets see some damn games that are supposed to usher gaming into the future Sony and quite frankly MGS4 isn't cutting it. The only game I see coming that has my interest is FF and that game better fuckin deliver. There not getting a dime from me until I see the proof in the pudding. So until then i'll keep playing my 360 and looking forward to at least 1 good game a month while you wait for potential to be released.

I'll continue to download HD movies that you paid out the ass for by a company who said fuck the gamers, you need a new movie format.

I'll conttinue to hunt for the Wii seeing as how Nintendo actually is in it for the games, you know, the main part of being a gamer. I must be right seeing as how Nintendo is kicking Sonys ass left and right made all the funnier by the fact that Sony talks so much shit, they deserve it.

In conclussion my point is this. I'm a gamer and as a gamer i'll play great games regardless of what system there on, however game recognizes game, and Sony doesn't have any. If after having Sony insult you, shit on your intelligence lie more about the PS3s ability than the PS2s and you bought one to wait damn near 2 years for it's "big guns" and have the nerve to pawn Uncharted, Heavenly Sword and Ratchet as reasons to buy? Your fuckin crazy, you can keep that shit. Keep thinkin the 360 doesn't have anything coming, to tide it over from it's triple AAA's, at least we have games to tide us over until our AAA's. That's like the PSP pulling handheld gaming out of the portable gaming, remember that comment? Funny how that shit worked out to didn't it?.

If your enjoying your PS3 and not talking shit and being dillusional then awesome this isn't for you, game on. But if your some Sony fanboy tool who is dillusional then your part of the problem and the reason that companies like Sony can say the shit they do and get away with it.

360 didn't have great games to play until GRAW came out, and then nothing great again until Gears came out.

And I had a 360 on day 1.

PGR3 was close thing, and given that it wasn't even as good as PGR2 (due to the lack of car classes), it can't make the "great" list for me.

Correction, I meant to say the psp pulling handheld gaming out of the portable ghetto.

@bastard,

Just because alot of people don't like the MG series doesn't mean we don't know a good game when we see one.

It's undeniable that Kojima really puts excellent production values into his games, however IMO, Japanese quirkiness aside, having this bad ass teched out stealth action hero that can hide in a cardboard box and fight vampires is fuckin stupid and kills the illusion for me. If I wanted to watch Get Smart, I'd buy the box set. It may be a great series to some, but it's not for me and I think people will be shocked at how poorly it sells. It will sell, but the million day one that they said they need? Not likely, especially considering the install base is so small and the fact that I don't know anyone planning on buying a PS3 for that game.

Its unbelievable - 360 owners actually have the gall to come and talk about "PS3 have no games" after the barren wasteland that the 360 had for its first 18 months!

Let us compare PS3 versus 360 first years
Non - exclusives: All the good ones the 360 had (GRAW2, R6, Oblivion) plus COD4, UT3 (still not out on 360), Assasins, Dirt, the list goes on
Exclusives: FOr one full year ZERO good games on 360 until the half-completed Gears minigame. Whereas PS3 has Resistance, Motorstorm, Ratchet, Heavenly, Uncharted.

Honestly, 360 owners, coming to a forum and loudly talking about the PS3 doesnt remove the fact that you are sad and pathetic - you actually had to play rubbish like PDZ, Saint's row, DoA and Kameo. Thats true "next gen" ha ha ha!

True, but recall, 360 got those games in a vacuum (well, not entirely a vacuum, as there was PC which could be co-developed), the PS3 got those games as high-end 7th gen development was really kicking in, and there was another well-established console with which to co-develop

Let me make a list of game series that some of you have no interest in:
MGS4 (sold 20mn)
FF (sold gazillions)
Gran turismo (30-40mn)
Ratchet and Clank
Tekken
God of War
Wipeout
SOCOM
Getaway

Or these new franchises / games
Uncharted (probably the most "perfect" game of the year)
Killzone
Little big planet
Heavenly sword
Resistance
Motorstorm
White knight story
Red dead revolver PS3 (the most likely Rockstar exclusive apparently)
Heavy rain (made by one of the most talented developers)
LA Noire
Infamous
Agency

Honestly, if you dont find any of these worth playable, thats fine - but dont make a fool of yourselves by coming to a public forum with your "PS3 has no games" rubbish!

And on my side, despite my strong dislike for MS, I have no hesitation in admitting that the 360 has some bloody fine games. Fortunately for me most of them are on PC (with the exception of Mass Effect - for how long though?), usually with free multiplayer, and play better with mkb.

yeah, because Little Big Planet and MGS4 are the only games us PS3 owners are looking forward too...

Burnout Paradise (just because it's coming to the 360 doesn't mean us sole PS3 owners *WON'T buy it)
Devil May Cry 4 (ditto)
Infamous
Heavy Rain
LA Noire
Haze (made by the guys who made a little N64 game called *GOLDENEYE, as well as the Timesplitters series)
Gran Turismo 5 prologue *AND Gran Turismo 5
Killzone 2 (Killzone was hampered by the underpowered PS2 technology, but Killzone Liberation on the PSP was a *LOT of fun)
Star Wars - multi-plat, but *WHO cares?
GTAIV - ditto
White Knight Story

oh yeah, and Little Big Planet and MGS 4, and maybe Final Fantasy XIII.

i'm so frigging sick of the media, and haters at large pretending that the Playstation 3 doesn't have *ANYTHING outside of classic franchises like MGS and FF to look forward to.

there are also *OTHER games that have yet to be announced that are hitting this year.

in the meantime, PS3 owners have some great multi-platform games already released to enjoy (ie, Orange Box, Rainbow Six Vegas, Call of Duty 4, etc), and some really great exclusives as well (Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet, Folklore, Resistance, Warhawk, Unreal Tournament 3, etc).

you guys act as if us PS3 owners are 3rd world citizens or something, or that every game released on the 360 is *GOLD or something (yeah, how's Two Worlds, Vampire Rain, and Bomberman Act Zero treating you guys?). i've owned, at *LEAST, 20 Playstation 3 games since i bought my system in February of 2007, and i'm going to add at *LEAST another 15 or so by the years end. that's *PLENTY to keep me busy until the next batch of games hit.

sheesh joystiq, and joystiq readers. give it a rest already.

the 360 is a good console, but it's not perfect, and how many games outside of Gears of War that were released during the 360's first year that were so amazing?

Dead Rising? please. medicore filler game (and yes, i've played it)
Lost Planet? um, no.
Kameo? yeah, *THAT'S a winner *rolls eyes*
Bomberman Act Zero? lol.

in the Playstation 3's first year, we were treated to a great launch title in Resistance, a great, if lacking in a bunch of features offroad racer in Motorstorm, a great fighter in Virtua Fighter 5, a great action game in Ninja Gaiden Sigma, a great online game in Warhawk (this game actually got me *INTO online gaming, as i'm a single player gamer at heart), a great action rpg in the strange but compelling Folklore, another great action game in Heavenly Sword, a great platformer in Ratchet and Clank Future, a great shooter in Uncharted, and another great online game in Unreal Tournament 3.

not to mention the great multi-platform games i've owned and played: Call of Duty 4, Rainbow Six Vegas, Oblivion, The Darkness, GRAW2, etc.

*PLENTY of great games hit the PS3 in it's *FIRST YEAR. but you guys are too goddamned blinded by your rampant fanboyism to give credit where credit is due.

it wasn't until the 360's *SECOND YEAR, that it got fun games like Crackdown, Mass Effect, Halo 3 (ultimately disappointing), and Bioshock (one of the best games ever made, and my pick for game of the year along with Uncharted).
