Long-time freelancer leaves Gamespot over Gerstmann-gate
While the major developments over last month's Gerstmann-gate fracas kind of petered out in the midst of vehement official denials, the reverberations are still being felt around Gamespot. Frank Provo, a freelancer and major contributor to the site for nearly eight years, recently announced he would no longer be contributing to the site.Provo made no bones about the reason for his departure. "I believe CNet management let Jeff go for all the wrong reasons," he wrote. "I believe CNet intends to soften the site's tone and push for higher scores to make advertisers happy." And Provo is in a position to know, according to an earlier post on his LiveJournal. "All the proof I need is in the way the staff reacted to Jeff's dismissal and to what went on in the closed door meeting that took place on November 30th," he said. "Any staffer that continues to work there once this fervor dies down does so with the fear that, one day, management will ask them to soften up their tone and scores... and they will either have to swallow their integrity and abide, or risk taking a stand and being let go," he added back in December.
All that remains to be seen now is whether Provo's will be alone in his action or whether others will follow his lead and depart what Provo calls "the ultimate soul-crushing work environment."

Thank you Provo, for standing up for the moral and ethics writers everywhere.
If I have a gaming website, I will hire you *cough*take_notes_IGN

Definitely. Props to him. Stick it to the man!

I lol'd at the filed under hacks part; I like the cut of your jib Mr. Orland.
DustoMan @ Jan 7th 2008 7:56PM
Kinda makes you wonder which side is attempting the hostile takeover.

I know! Damn those writers and their... integrity. How do they sleep at night, knowing they write such blatent... truths. Bastards.

Yet another Gerstmann news bit, and still no REAL feedback from the man himself. I want something to chew on, similar to a chocolate log. It would be interesting to hear from ex-gamespotters on this "soul-crushing work environment" thing.

GameSpot's reputation is shattered in my eyes.
Might as well get off a sinking ship.

As much as I hate what happened, and detest Gamespot for the events, it's kind of late in the events to make a big stand. Thats kind of like me getting pissed today that Nintendo has dropped support for the Virtual Boy.
Things have kind of blown over, which is a shame, because I think people need to remember. Maybe if a new gamespot staffer leaves every month then people won't forget!

for the love of god, i thought this was over.
i respect the guy, and respect his followers, but that period where it was all joystiq reported was just pain.
colin @ Jan 7th 2008 8:20PM
Gerstmann??? did i miss something?
Seishino @ Jan 7th 2008 8:23PM
Good for Provo. As someone on the other end of the reviewing food chain, I have strong respect for reviewers who have integrity. It's hard enough to make a good game: it's completely disheartening when a score is received due to anything other than the sweat of our brows.
I don't have the data to know anything about Gertsmann or Provo or whatever may be the (T)ruth. But I have to respect standing up for the integrity of game reviews.

Ugh, the american edition, with the horrendous little what-ever-the-hell-it-is green planetty thing that Adams hated so much.
Ugh, take it away!
Ugh!

Somebody has got balls.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 8th 2008 2:54AM
I heard that he had balls of steel.
JPGamer26 @ Jan 7th 2008 9:17PM
It sure took him a while to make the decision, his latest review is dated December 19th.

Articles are generally written well in advance.

WHENEVER I FIND A FAQ OR SOMETHING ELSE ON GAMESPOT THAT I MIGHT WANT TO VIEW AGAIN IN THE FUTURE I CUT OUT THE TEXT AND MAKE THAT FAQ A WORD DOCUMENT SO GAMESPOT'S GARBAGE SITE WON'T BE ABLE TO COUNT ME AS A REPEATED VISITOR....B.O.Y.C.O.T.T....G.A.M.E.S.P.O.T.!!!
colin @ Jan 8th 2008 12:06AM
a boycott doesn't work that way ...
t_m @ Jan 8th 2008 9:02AM
I haven't been to gamespot since then.. its easy enough to find anything thats on gamespot on alternative sites through google.
I doubt many other people care much though.
Urza @ Jan 7th 2008 10:30PM
Something tells me this isn't the last part of Gerstmann-gate. Maybe it's time Gerstmann got his own category so we can follow it easier. :)
t_m @ Jan 8th 2008 9:06AM
I doubt we'll ever hear anything from Gerstman or Gamespot on the issue. The way these things generally pan out is that, instead of firing you, they offer you a deal where you get severence pay, benefits, and good references in return for going quiently and not saying anything negative about the company. If either of them comments they'd be in breach of contract.
Still, to me the reaction coming from other gamespot people confirms that THEY all think its true, and they are in a much better position to guess than we are. Which convinces me it was all true.
I don't visit gamespot anymore.

i stopped going to that website the second they fired him. i never hesitated and haven't looked back since.
kane & lynch was horrible. it definately had some good points but, i kid you not, i finished it in one sitting and distinctly remember saying; "that's it"? it's been several years since a game disappointed me as much as kane & lynch.
being a big fan of Hitman, i was thoroughly shocked and disappointed with IO.
