In another
CES 2008 announcement, Microsoft has highlighted nine new additions to its
Games for Windows endeavor, promising to "continue the momentum for Windows-based gaming in 2008" and "revive" the PC gaming space. The titles due to be dressed in Microsoft's colors include:
- Alone in the Dark (Atari)
- Bionic Commando (Capcom)
- Conflict: Denied Ops (Eidos Interactive)
- Empire: Total War (SEGA)
- LEGO Indiana Jones (LucasArts)
- Microsoft Train Simulator 2 (Microsoft Game Studios)
- Sins of a Solar Empire (Stardock)
- Space Siege (SEGA)
- Tomb Raider: Underworld (Eidos Interactive)
The list not only cements the "Underworld" subtitle to Eidos'
next Tomb Raider, but provides reassurance as to the longevity of Microsoft's initiative. Games for Windows is sure to be around for
quite some time if
Alone in the Dark manages to arrive under its banner. Microsoft's polite press release is also keen to remind us that other expected 2008 titles --
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures,
Borderlands,
The Club,
Fallout 3 and
Frontlines: Fuel of War -- will stand beneath the flapping emblem.

How nice of Microsoft to "revive" the dead PC gamming market, by charging people to pay for online play.
KingOfGods @ Jan 7th 2008 4:37PM
Games for Windows and Games for Windows LIVE are two seperate things.
Games for Windows is pretty much a set of requirements that are set that developers add to the games (like xbox 360 controller support) and has nothing to do with multi-player.
Games for Windows LIVE is a Payed service like Xbox 360 LIVE but for Windows.
Just because a game may be Games for Windows branded doesn't mean it will support Games for Windows LIVE
Dan @ Jan 10th 2008 5:11PM
Who said anything about paying to play online?
Trickob @ Jan 7th 2008 3:53PM
Microsoft, George Lucas, AND Lego?!?
that's it, I'm moving to Canada...

This has nothing to do with this blog entry, but what size does the image have to be for me to use it as my avatar and see the whole thing?
FidliousWong @ Jan 7th 2008 5:06PM
How could you have gotten this far on the internet without understanding the idea of "right click?"
colin @ Jan 7th 2008 5:52PM
wong, some people have mac's ...
Mr Khan @ Jan 7th 2008 6:35PM
In my case, as long as its JPEG, it will scale the image down to fit, but it always cuts off just a little of the right side of the image
LaughingTarget @ Jan 7th 2008 6:36PM
Ah, I see your problem now, get a PC.
Dan @ Jan 10th 2008 5:13PM
mac has right click... dumb asses
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 7th 2008 4:01PM
Because it's so hard for a game company to slap a banner at the top of their boxart.
The only thing I care about is gauranteed widescreen resolution support, but I don't even have a widescreen monitor yet so...

Eff GFW. Steam FTW.
LaughingTarget @ Jan 7th 2008 6:37PM
Until you find out GFW titles are sold on Steam.

Yay, now I can play train simulator with my friends on LIVE!! Just what I was waiting for!! But in all seriousness, I like the Games for Windows live, it's great, I can play my games online on live (most of the time), and it's also got the controls for the xbox 360 wireless controller pre-configured for the game, no setup required. It's almost like it transforms your PC into more of a console. I wonder how tomb raider will be though.
spenc3r @ Jan 7th 2008 4:14PM
YAY! More games for microsoft to screw up. ( i love my 360, but gfw is horrible)
Supino @ Jan 7th 2008 4:38PM
Microsoft Train Simulator 2?
I want
- Microsoft Escalator Simulator
- Microsoft Tractor Excitment
- Microsoft Snow Plough Simulator
....or or... Microsofts Mechanical Diggers!!
JAmerican @ Jan 7th 2008 10:26PM
Don't dis this. Many trainfans/railfans including myself are glad that they brought this back from the dead. It was originally announced in 2003. Now 4 years later, its back! :)
Donald @ Jan 7th 2008 4:40PM
This branding sucks and is now about...
*looks at Microsoft Train Simulator*
... DAMN!!
Norm @ Jan 7th 2008 5:51PM
Aren't many of these games considered to be "console games"? I wonder why there is a push to release these games on the PC format. I'm not complaining, but seems to me that PC gaming shouldn't be marketed like it was just another console. I guess a game is a game, sure, and I'm glad that they aren't just a bunch of RTS, MMOs, and FPS games that they are promoting, but I don't think that "Tomb Raider" is going to get people to move to the windows platform. Maybe I'm wrong.
(But then again, train simulator.....)

GFW Live is *ok*. If you're already paying for XBL Gold then it's better than nothing at all (usually - Halo 2 Vista had too many Gold-only games for my taste) and can definitely add something to the game in terms of sociality.
The main problems with GFW are that 1) Steam is infinitely better and 2) there aren't many good titles for it, so as a group it's not all that good. Part of what's holding it down is MS not using some of what was good/had potential in previous GFW titles - Tray and Play was an good potential feature for GFW titles (see Halo 2 Vista) the only problem was that it was buggy - things like this would help differentiate GFW titles and get more developers to sign on with GFW - which as an initiative is a very good idea for consumers and the industry as a whole because it's mainly about standardization, getting PC titles equal exposure at retail, things like that.
Einhanderkiller @ Jan 7th 2008 6:39PM
Sins of a Solar Empire is going to be amazing. Good thing they're not support Games for Windows - LIVE, because that service is atrocious.
smoke_tetsu @ Jan 7th 2008 7:47PM
There's too much confusion between GFW and GFW LIVE I see.
GFW doesn't automatically mean LIVE. GFW isn't really competing with Steam as you can get those games on Steam like at least one other has pointed out.
Also Tomb Raider on the PC isn't a new thing all the previous Tomb Raider games have all come out for the PC. If you don't like using Keyboard and Mouse for those games you could always also use a gamepad.
I myself prefer certain controls for certain games.... and for Tomb Raider Anniversery I actually used a gamepad... but for things like FPS and Third Person Shooter games that control like them I use keyboard and mouse.
Also I think the more games the merrier so despite some of these seeming "console centric" I think it's good that they are still coming to the PC.
One last thing I don't think the PC market has been dead nor will it be anytime soon. That's a lie that has been repeated a bit too much.

If there is confusion between GFW and GFW live its because they are confusingly branded, not to mention awkward mouthfuls, and terribly managed.
GFW seems to be part of microsoft's plan to make everyone switch to the 360. After all, with the 360 they have finally achieved what they have always tried and failed to do with windows and MSN.. a private, microsoft controlled internet where they get cuts of everything.
I have no plans to ever buy a GFW product... which is most annoying cos i was really looking forward to borderlands. Still... i want to support the PC, so i need to boycott GFW.
