In another
CES 2008 announcement, Microsoft has highlighted nine new additions to its
Games for Windows endeavor, promising to "continue the momentum for Windows-based gaming in 2008" and "revive" the PC gaming space. The titles due to be dressed in Microsoft's colors include:
- Alone in the Dark (Atari)
- Bionic Commando (Capcom)
- Conflict: Denied Ops (Eidos Interactive)
- Empire: Total War (SEGA)
- LEGO Indiana Jones (LucasArts)
- Microsoft Train Simulator 2 (Microsoft Game Studios)
- Sins of a Solar Empire (Stardock)
- Space Siege (SEGA)
- Tomb Raider: Underworld (Eidos Interactive)
The list not only cements the "Underworld" subtitle to Eidos'
next Tomb Raider, but provides reassurance as to the longevity of Microsoft's initiative. Games for Windows is sure to be around for
quite some time if
Alone in the Dark manages to arrive under its banner. Microsoft's polite press release is also keen to remind us that other expected 2008 titles --
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures,
Borderlands,
The Club,
Fallout 3 and
Frontlines: Fuel of War -- will stand beneath the flapping emblem.

Games for Windows is pretty much a set of requirements that are set that developers add to the games (like xbox 360 controller support) and has nothing to do with multi-player.
Games for Windows LIVE is a Payed service like Xbox 360 LIVE but for Windows.
Just because a game may be Games for Windows branded doesn't mean it will support Games for Windows LIVE
that's it, I'm moving to Canada...

The only thing I care about is gauranteed widescreen resolution support, but I don't even have a widescreen monitor yet so...

The main problems with GFW are that 1) Steam is infinitely better and 2) there aren't many good titles for it, so as a group it's not all that good. Part of what's holding it down is MS not using some of what was good/had potential in previous GFW titles - Tray and Play was an good potential feature for GFW titles (see Halo 2 Vista) the only problem was that it was buggy - things like this would help differentiate GFW titles and get more developers to sign on with GFW - which as an initiative is a very good idea for consumers and the industry as a whole because it's mainly about standardization, getting PC titles equal exposure at retail, things like that.

GFW doesn't automatically mean LIVE. GFW isn't really competing with Steam as you can get those games on Steam like at least one other has pointed out.
Also Tomb Raider on the PC isn't a new thing all the previous Tomb Raider games have all come out for the PC. If you don't like using Keyboard and Mouse for those games you could always also use a gamepad.
I myself prefer certain controls for certain games.... and for Tomb Raider Anniversery I actually used a gamepad... but for things like FPS and Third Person Shooter games that control like them I use keyboard and mouse.
Also I think the more games the merrier so despite some of these seeming "console centric" I think it's good that they are still coming to the PC.
One last thing I don't think the PC market has been dead nor will it be anytime soon. That's a lie that has been repeated a bit too much.

GFW seems to be part of microsoft's plan to make everyone switch to the 360. After all, with the 360 they have finally achieved what they have always tried and failed to do with windows and MSN.. a private, microsoft controlled internet where they get cuts of everything.
I have no plans to ever buy a GFW product... which is most annoying cos i was really looking forward to borderlands. Still... i want to support the PC, so i need to boycott GFW.
