Sony's new $300, 16GB Memory Stick

The march of progress continues unabated as Sony has unveiled a new 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo at CES. The PSP- and PS3-compatible proprietary storage solution will cost a whopping $300 when it comes out in March. That might seem a little steep, especially when similarly sized SD cards are half the price and available now. Still, it could be worse -- back in 1956, you'd have to pay $10,000 $50,000 (Edit: whoops. Typo) for a 5MB hard drive. So, really, this new card is a bargain!

Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 7th 2008 5:20PM
Nice!
Call me when it goes up to 32. I might jump back in then.
DayDayRules @ Jan 7th 2008 5:22PM
a little mistake. following that chart, in 1956 a 5mb drive would be $50,000. Jeez, joystiq, CMON!
Ignatius @ Jan 7th 2008 5:29PM
Well fine! Post about the mistake a minute before I do. ;(
Ignatius @ Jan 7th 2008 5:23PM
Umm... hate to nitpick or anything, but it's actually $50,000 for the 5MB drive, it was 10k per megabyte. :P
Anyhoo, that's kind of a lame price considering all you can do is use that on the PSP and maybe a few dozen other camcorders, cameras, etc. SD cards are so much better.
DayDayRules @ Jan 7th 2008 6:21PM
lol man, its all good. we both noticed it, didnt we?
NATO_Duke @ Jan 7th 2008 5:24PM
I'm sorry, did you say $300 memory card...
Yuccadude @ Jan 7th 2008 5:58PM
It's just two $150 memory cards duct taped together.
CB @ Jan 7th 2008 6:18PM
I remember back in the day when I was almost suckered into buying a 1gb card for $100 (which was a couple years in internet years).
B1gC72 @ Jan 8th 2008 2:31AM
yea i payed $135 for a 1GB memory stick back then. but that was because all i had before that was the 32MB it came with. i then upgraded to a 4GB when that hit $85 last year. ill probably do the same when the 8GB drops in price.
but if anyone pays $300 for this memory stick, they are ill informed and dont realize how fast the prices on these things fall. this stick will be $150 this time next year.
rv @ Jan 8th 2008 1:47PM
got $30 4gb this black friday. unfortunately I cant find my psp so I haven't used it yet :(
James @ Jan 7th 2008 5:26PM
I'm going to get one. But ruddy hell Sony drop your fucking memory stick. SDHD (or whatever it's called) is here and much cheaper with the same transfer speeds as your format.
£36 for a 4gb memory stick pro duo alpha ex upper
£20 for a 4gb SD.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 7th 2008 5:36PM
Sony... drop a format?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Jan 7th 2008 7:00PM
I love you Crono.
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Jan 7th 2008 8:11PM
SDHD is not noticeably cheaper than MS Pro Duo.
I wouldn't mind if Sony dropped MS Pro Duo thoug, they seem to be in process. Their new phones support nanoSD. Many of their cameras (mine included) support other formats too (but not the low end).
arrrgh @ Jan 7th 2008 5:27PM
thanks for more mandatory proprietary bullshit sony. keep up the good work
jynxycat @ Jan 7th 2008 9:07PM
It's only proprietary in the PSP, the ps3 supports all sorts of card slots, providing you got one with the memory card slots to begin with.
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Jan 7th 2008 5:30PM
The day I spend $300 on a memory card is the day I stop criticizing things I don't give a shit about on a video game blog.
NATO_Duke @ Jan 7th 2008 5:49PM
Nice. +1.
Hirsbrunner @ Jan 7th 2008 6:11PM
That's gold. +1.
Organic_Shadow @ Jan 7th 2008 5:37PM
Cry all the rivers you want, but expensive higher capacity memory sticks from Sony = price drops all around on the lower capacities. Think I'll grab an 8gb sometime soon...
Zertoss @ Jan 7th 2008 5:38PM
SanDisk will make a cheaper one, lol.
Cesaria @ Jan 7th 2008 5:38PM
I believe this sums Sony up perfectly.

Thank you! I'm a big fan of Maddox's site and have fought back the urge to post that link.
Now, I can sit back and laugh!
We're dating your younger, hotter sister the Wii.
Slayer @ Jan 7th 2008 5:44PM
I'll be picking one up when the price comes down a bit.
FidliousWong @ Jan 7th 2008 5:50PM
Way, way to overreact, everyone.
Look, if you need 16GB in a PSP or camera, you're a fucking retard, period. If this March date has you hopping up as "The only time you can buy this stick," then yeah, you can get pissed off. But if you spent half as much for a clue as you did your blow-up wife, you'd realize something. Three things, actually.
A. This means the price of other sized sticks will go down. All around. This is what happens everytime a new stick gets released.
B. When PSP launched, a 2GB MSPD was more than the system. A year later, you could choose between a Oblivion on 360 or a 2GB MSPD at the same price.
C. Latest technology = high price. Waiting until the 32GB comes out = $110 for this stick.
LaughingTarget @ Jan 7th 2008 6:44PM
Yet when this stick hits $110, SD will be $20. Since Sony is trying to get the PSP-PS3 functionality going, they'll want to get more space crammed in there. Those PS1 games aren't that small, especially when SquareEnix decides to put FF7-9 on the Playstation Store. Where did my space go?
fuliano626@psn @ Jan 7th 2008 5:52PM
that's not to bad watch in 3-5 months it will be down to 200 or so
lee @ Jan 7th 2008 5:56PM
cheap
navstar @ Jan 7th 2008 6:11PM
I just bought an 8GB microSD for $70 on ebay. And what's this Mark 2, business??
Dio @ Jan 7th 2008 9:10PM
It's probably fake.
Moofree @ Jan 7th 2008 6:09PM
That's enough to stick at _least_ 10 UMD rips on it.
It'll pay for itself :D
DrXym @ Jan 7th 2008 6:10PM
Seems a tad on the ludicrously expensive side.
jsn @ Jan 7th 2008 6:24PM
why exactly is this on Joystiq?
Jhongerkong @ Jan 7th 2008 8:26PM
Because it has to do with gaming?
Babel @ Jan 8th 2008 12:34PM
Why exactly are YOU on Joystiq?
sk8tbrdngpetey @ Jan 7th 2008 6:32PM
it costs more then a psp and almost as much as the ps3. who in their right mind would spend that much on a memory card.
......Rich little kids of course
Lifted 0ne 4l9 (NDF - Fire!) @ Jan 7th 2008 6:34PM
shit like this is one of the reasons i dont like Sony
SonyFTW @ Jan 7th 2008 7:27PM
Sony business plan...
"Lets charge twice as much for our product* that does exactly what our competitor's does; then, lets design and market it so that our product has only half as many uses" - Brilliant.
(*Above references relate to the $600 ps3 with hardly any games and the $300 16gig pro-duo with hardly any compatibility outside of Sony's products.)
James @ Jan 7th 2008 7:30PM
Hah, pretty much.
If Sony hadn't clamped down on homebrew (screw piracy, but homebrew?!) and had an SD card on a PSP I would have bought and kept one from launch rather than waiting until now.
JoePez @ Jan 7th 2008 8:03PM
Well, 16gb might come in mighty handy if this Blu-Ray-to-PSP news is true:
http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006194.html
Still, 300 bucks? Cracker, please.
SharpBlade @ Jan 7th 2008 8:08PM
I wonder if this falls in line with Sony demoing how to rip Blu-ray movies to your PSP and PS3 at CES??
http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/006194.html
Definately not paying $300 for that.
SharpBlade @ Jan 7th 2008 8:10PM
Ok JoePez GET OUT OF MY BRAIN!!!
=)
Rob Accomando @ Jan 7th 2008 8:59PM
8GB Memorystick = $114 x 2 = $228
16GB Memorystick = $300?
I can see $240-$250, but why the extra $50???
WTF Sony?
Farseer (GDI) @ Jan 8th 2008 12:42AM
That's for the duct tape.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 8th 2008 2:43AM
Well... advice to them: not a great way to appeal to PSP consumers.
"Get your PSP and buy a memory stick for it which is more expensive than that very same console!"
GamerX @ Jan 19th 2008 9:10PM
Hi im just lettin u people know dat if u r getting it know wat u r buying...they say its a 16gb but when you put it in your PSP or device u r using. it would only show 14.9GB :(
