- Star Tropics (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Recoil in horror as you learn... that your... dear uncle... Dr. Jones... has been kidnapped! Obey flabby, shirtless men, embark on an epic island quest and question whether being constantly labeled as an "ace pitcher" is some sort of sexual advance! Also, murder a large snake by shoving a yo-yo down its throat!
- The King of Fighters '94 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): KOF up the money and SNK's Super Bogard Bros. is yours. The first edition in a long line of three-on-three team pummeling games, this may be worth some fisticuffs if you've not been swayed by the 89 sequels since.

I've never played Star Tropics before. It's supposed to be pretty awesome, right?

Its only one of the BEST GAMES EVER MADE.
Trivia: Even though the game was developed in Japan, it was only released in North America.

I love Star Tropics. Wonder if the copy protection from Star Tropics will be removed, or whether or not they'll just make the info from the instruction booklet available in the "How-to-Play" thingie...

Yea, the game came with a letter from your gramps or something, and at one point in the game you were instructed to submerse the letter in water, inwhich the number 747 would appear, which was a code to open a door in the game. It was made of some weird paper that didnt fall apart, and the number would dissapear when it dried off. Cool stuff, I bought the original packaged version from ebay just so I could have it :) It was really a difficult game too. That magma octopus was flipping hard

There's a puzzle in the game that required the manual. Specifically, you needed to dip a paper that came with the game in water to unveil a code. He's wondering if they'll include that in the digital manual with the VC release.

I can't believe you remembered that code. Honestly that had to be one of the coolest things ever when I was a kid. Finding a secret code by pouring water on the letter that came with the game was one of the best gimmicks ever!
Obligatory "We need more of that in games today" quote.

I've never been able to FORGET the code. I even found it by accident--I was futzing around and spilled some water I was drinking on the manual, got a little on the note. Imagine my sixth grader self going "what the..." when I found the note... I hadn't gotten to the point where the game tells you it's there, so I though I'd found something huge and unknown.

Haha, I just got a copy of it a couple of weeks ago, too.
(Along with a copy of Chrono Trigger; both for $5 total!)

Yeah, wait. How ARE they getting around the secret code on the VC edition?
I still have this game for my NES, absolutely great game, I'd love for them to continue the franchise!

Me too, and luckily it still works like a charm. I still can't believe how the battery inside the cartridge can still work after 10+ years since it came out. Took me well 3 days to figure that the code was 747, since I bought it separatedly without the box nor the manual, and the only way to find it for me was to start from 999 to 000.
And about spilling water on a letter to see a code, you guys should see our peso bills here in Mexico. One of the seals require to be spilled with water to see wether it is a real bill or not. Pure awesomeness.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the magic map you have to have in Star Tropics that helped you figure out where to go at one point. I think you had to put it in water or something.
When I was a kid I LOVED Star Tropics, it was so great. I doubt it'll hold up now.

Oh, HELL YES. Startropics was easily one of my favorite NES games.
I actually dug out my NES last week and played through it. It's held up very well over the years.

Agree re Startropics, it was a great game.
Startropics 2, not so much, it seemed to lack something that made the first game great and the controls were a bit less refined.

The 2nd game, imo, was worth it just for the music. Much more varied and catchy than the first. Plus the controls were 10x better.
It wouldve been perfect had it not had all those historical figures and kept it back on the island. However, the last chapter was a nostalgic punch in the face (in a good way).

Oh, great. Nobody warned me that I didn't have to dunk my Wii for the VC version of StarTropics until now. Thanks a ton, guys.
