Great post!

You rip CDs to an HDD, though, not burn them.

Technicalities, technicalities. I'll go troll some grammar on Digg.

Urgh ... fixed.

I blame two solid days of editing the 50th episode of the Fancast.

I've got a media question - is there any way to get streamed videos to sort by show, season, etc.? I've got Connect360 and WMP11 on Windows XP, and I can't figure out how to get the videos to display as anything other than a big, nasty list.

You could try TVersity at http://tversity.com since it offers tags to sort videos by. I ended up using the Genre tag of "Firefly" so I can get to all my episodes of that series on-demand. Another major benefit is that it doesn't just stream WMV and divx and H264 to the 360, if the PC is fast enough to transcode stuff like MPEG-2 on-the-fly.

The big problem with TVersity is that it is touchy about firewall settings and network connection priority. If you have one and only one network connection it should be easy, but people with two active NICs in their PC or bittorrent virtual network connections need to clean things up first...

Hey guys, I'm pretty sure the Microsoft 360 Wireless Adapter is the only one that will work via USB. If you don't use that one you have to go with one that works using the ethernet port.

Indeed you're right. Ethernet adapters only. Still lots cheaper than the official adapter.

Fixed.

No joke. I think there is some sort of shadow entity out there that keeps Canadians from getting favourably-priced US goods easily. For example:

- duties & taxes on x-border shopping
- dubious "brokerage fees" for shipping x-border (most notably from UPS)
- lack of availability of US consumer electronics from online retailers to be shipped to Canada (amazon.com for example)
- US auto dealerships refusing to sell to Canadians

I tell you: They just don't like us or something.

I'm pretty sure overscan is different on every TV, so just automatically adding a border would probably add weird black bars around some users' TVs (as well as not totally fixing the problem on some other users' TVs).

As I see it, the possible solutions are:

1. User-defined overscan correction bars (so that you can set it and forget it!)
2. Fixing the overscan on your TV through your TV's service menu (YMMV and forget it!)
3. Teaching online content makers to use the "TV safe area" as a guideline for making videos

1 and 3 are kind of out of your control, but you might be able to do 2 without any outside assistance. (BE SURE TO WRITE DOWN ALL YOUR SETTINGS BEFORE YOU RUIN THEM)

I'm not ruining my settings, I'm fixing them in a negative way. I have tried to set my TV's overscan area, but the menus are unhelpful and do nothing to fix the problem. When I'm playing Rock Band, I can't see the Band meter on the left side of the screen, so I don't know how close I am to failing when I'm playing with my friends. Stupid Samsung menus...

I suffer from terrible overscan, but only on some games, some of the time.

On the Halo3 beta, it would randomly overscan or scan properly. But on Halo3 it always overscans.

I can't see why the issue exists when the standard res for LCD tvs nowadays is 1366 by 768, or 1280 by 720, or 1920 by 1080. All the 360 needs is to give 2 options in 480p, 576p, 720p, or 1080i to use one of the 2 resolutions for HD ready, and output at that exact resolution. Surely the problem would be fixed, unless you have a strange plasma or projector res.

Regarding the Region Compatibility issue...

I too am an ex-pat gamer in Japan and unfortunately PlayAsia is often very cagey about giving out the info on region compatibility and language support with big titles. It took over a month from initial release for them to acknowledge that the Asian version of Mass Effect was region free. Generally the Asian versions are quite a bit cheaper than the American ones and as such PlayAsia would rather folks buy the more expensive American version. Another list can be found at http://forum.xbox-sky.com/xbox360_regional_compatibility_guide/
There are several other lists out there but most ignore the "supported languages" in each version. For support within Japan you can check out the folks at http://www.gaijingamers.com. Their 360 list isn't perfect but it is fairly good at listing supported languages in Japan versions.

The Divx streaming works very well! As long as you have your media player 11 sharing set up it should work fine. I din't know if this makes a difference or not but you might need the divx/xvid codecs for WMP11. I Started backing up all my dvd's to divx and streaming them to my home theatre via the 360 and it works great so far. You can also stream .mp4's too if you have an ipod video, you have to rename the file extension .avi and have the proper codec for WMP11 since it does not natively support the .mp4 format.

@StrokeDiesel:

Remember to set WMP11 to search the folder you have your music in on the external HDD and have it add those items to it's library.

I'm currently having problems with regions as my 360 is an ex-pat US one (it come with me when I moved back to the UK). I can download Live Arcade games fine, plus demos and all the rest, but I cannot download movies or trailers because I am in the incorrect region.

Even altering my locale settings doesn't help, which sucks. So I'm a bit stuck really. I suspect it's going to be a PAL vs NTSC vs Region issue, but I have yet to write to XBox to find out.
I would Like to Ask the same thing as the image asks:- I got pwned in Halo 3 and I am by no means a good player but there was nothing redeeming about my play. I did decently better on TF2 but still I suck. What do I do to improve my situation. Unlike most of the kids on Live I can't spend more than 1 hr a day honing my skills because of my job. Is there no respite for me? no chance of redemption and perhaps even some revenge?
Yeah, a lot of us Geezers are in the same boat, since we have, you know, *lives* and stuff.

I've been a member of GeezerGamers.com for about three years now. I still suck, but I definitely have more fun than I did before. ;)
