Get another glimpse of LittleBigPlanet's level creator
Or in this case, its foliage creator. Embedded after the break you'll find a brief CES video demonstration of the PS3's perpetually praised LittleBigPlanet, depicting the elegant interface used to give form to your platforming designs. Though we're already envisioning a deadly sequence of precarious, single-pixel steps suspended above a pit of eternal hellfire in our level, you're perfectly welcome to make a happy little tree and call it a day.
In the interest of being informative, we'll remind you that LittleBigPlanet is only expected to arrive in September. We are not happy about it.

Before the negativity starts, I want to say one thing:
X-Rated user created levels sent to unsuspecting friends.
XanthouS @ Jan 8th 2008 6:11PM
One of the PC's greatest qualities, user-created content, is finally finding a home on consoles.
Between LBP and UT3 I expect there to be a lot of creative efforts that add tons of replayability to these games.
Hyams @ Jan 8th 2008 6:18PM
Before anyone asks:
Yes, LBP does have a point outside of creating content. It's a side scrolling platformer with an emphasis placed on physics based gameplay.
There will be enemies in the game.
Apparently we'll be able to make levels outside of this genre too.
jsn @ Jan 8th 2008 6:26PM
are there any vids of actual gameplay? I've seen quite a few vids, but don't recall any being actual gameplay. The game looks interesting, I like the animation style, the look of it. I just want to see some of the actual game.

The video shows 4 people playing through a level that (I believe) was quickly thrown together by the devs. Not all gameplay elements are shown - not only have the devs added more to the game since this video was made, but they've kept much in the dark - but it gives you an idea of how the physics based gameplay works.
B1gC72 @ Jan 9th 2008 1:43AM
hadnt seen that particular trailer before (the one you linked to). i wonder how long it took to put that level together. the only thing i worry about from what ive seen so far is that some of that stuff looks like it might be difficult for the average user to put together. i dont know though since i havent played the game. i guess they could always just download premade levels then.
Dan CiTi @ Jan 8th 2008 6:20PM
Yeah, the PS3 was worth buying.
Marty @ Jan 8th 2008 6:25PM
I think Garry's mod kinda beat them to the punch.
Dan CiTi @ Jan 8th 2008 6:31PM
I wasn't aware Garry's mod was such a great platformer and had such a unique art style. But Gmod is still amazing.
Marty @ Jan 8th 2008 7:10PM
Such a great platfomer? So you've played LBP? It's great?
Dan CiTi @ Jan 8th 2008 7:34PM
I've heard the gameplay is very solid. But nothing is certain until it ships. Unless you're talking about UT2003/4. lol.
SGT Grumbles @ Jan 8th 2008 8:18PM
Actually Dan, someone did make a sidescroller gamemode. There were a couple levels to show it off, and I think someone made a map of the second level of Super Mario featuring headcrab goombas.
But people lost interest mostly due to the Zombie Survival gamemode, and all of those damn Roleplay "gamemodes".
sicsided @ Jan 8th 2008 8:36PM
Why does it matter that Garry's Mod beat them to the punch? There has been many click and drop editors out there.
SGT Grumbles @ Jan 8th 2008 9:33PM
Because we're sore that it's only on PS3 yet have no plans on getting one, and mask this by saying "been there, done that".
Or maybe that's just me.
B1gC72 @ Jan 9th 2008 2:01AM
ok Marty, you like Garry's Mod, we get it. every time something about LittleBigPlanet is posted, you make it seem like no two games can use the same concepts. it's called a genre man. if Garry's mod is better in your opinion (even though you've never played LBP) then go play with Garry's mod. wasnt aware you could play GMod on the PS3 either, so whats the big deal if PS3 gets in on some of the action that you think is so good?
mr mobius @ Jan 8th 2008 6:27PM
Is it just me or does this seem perfect for the Wii.
If the Wii had a viable storage method then I don't think graphics matter hugely. The Wii could handle this I'm pretty sure.
cc123 @ Jan 8th 2008 6:39PM
Yeah the Wii's open easy to access network capabilities would really complement this games heavy emphasis on sharing user created content...
lol
Dan CiTi @ Jan 8th 2008 6:41PM
Hey Reggie! And no, it couldn't. That's like saying the Apple II can run Crysis perfectly on max. settings(OK, that's TOTALLY XTREME of a statment but still). They could always make a shitty version for the Wii. The whole community aspect would be destoryed. No thanks. You're lucky Spore is coming to the Wii. Although it'll probably be better for the PC.
TheGuy @ Jan 8th 2008 6:46PM
"The Wii could handle this I'm pretty sure."
I don't mean to flame, but I have serious doubts on whether the Wii can handle this game. This game may look simple graphics-wise, but from what I've heard this is a physics-intensive game. I remember reading that some people experienced slowdowns during hectic moments in the game. I'm sure a Wii-like version can be made, but I doubt it can look as detailed and be as physically-dynamic as LittleBigPlanet.
mr mobius @ Jan 8th 2008 6:53PM
The video shown above didn't really show LBG as a physics powerhouse. I watched the other video someone posted and it does seem more physics based. Thanks for the sarcasm though. It just seemed to make sense because of the twisting of the 'tree' and how a pointer might be better for placing things than a control stick, especially with the huge amount of menus that seems to have. I don't see why the Wii can't operate decent physics - its not the SNES anymore - Super Mario Galaxy has decent physics I'd say.
This was never meant as a flame btw, just as something that seemed viable, and as I have a Wii and no PS3, it would be nice game to have to play I'd say.
The Wii online community could do something similar to this. Elebits apparently has a popular level swapping system, and Super Smash Bros Bash will have level swapping when it comes. Before someone says it, I accept that the wii codes could be hinderous but if its anonymous then there'd be no need.
Mr Khan @ Jan 8th 2008 7:22PM
I would agree with Mr Mobius, in that this game would probably sell a lot better on the Wii
Would it be the same? By no means. LBP is about the sharing and the co-op, although the sharing isn't impossible on the Wii (it would just have to be simplified, but Brawl shows there is user-created DLC as a possibility), and the physics aren't either (The engine that generated them would have to be simpler, they wouldn't be real-time physics, but they would certainly be there), but it wouldn't be as streamlined, the obvious network flaws would seriously hinder this title
cc123 @ Jan 8th 2008 7:38PM
You should take a look at some of the other (better quality) media that has come out for this game, it really is quite beautiful. Even though the graphics could be considered "kiddy" I'd be willing to bet that they are quite intensive. The physics and material modeling also look top notch. There is no way this game could run on the Wii as is.
As far as sharing goes, Nintendo's draconian approach to online would most likely hamper a lot of the possibilities that will be available. The games editor seems to be quite robust which would allow people to create anything...and in this sense I'm referring to things that would be considered pornographic, inflammatory...etc Would Nintendo even allow that? The devs have also mentioned that you can upload your own pics and music and use them to customize your levels which you could then share. I really don't see that getting approved.
So if we turned down the resolution and some of the graphical niceness, scaled back the physics and material modeling, and restricted the online capabilities to whatever level would only allow "kid safe" sharing, would it even be the same game?
It seems like the only valid reason you gave for calling this game "perfect for the Wii" was the pointer control during editing. While it may be a better control during that part I would never trade all the other things I mentioned just so I can use a pointer instead of an analog stick.
Bluebrake @ Jan 8th 2008 9:52PM
I also wonder what kind of hard drive space all this original content will take up.
Calviin @ Jan 8th 2008 6:53PM
want nao!
BigD145 @ Jan 8th 2008 7:00PM
I don't need a cell chip to play old school Super Mario World.
Dan CiTi @ Jan 8th 2008 7:25PM
This will probably be the best 2(.5)D Platformer since Super Mario World. Minus Viewtiful Joe or something I can't remember.
Matt B @ Jan 8th 2008 7:40PM
But you will to play LBP.
Joe Smith @ Jan 8th 2008 7:19PM
I think they are in great danger of over-complicating and adding too many features to this. Every video I see shows more and more complex editor funcitons and less and less gameplay. Too much fiddling and adding will kill any good idea.
Mr Khan @ Jan 8th 2008 7:25PM
Brawl sez different, all Dojo's been advertising are the details, but that's just to advertise to the core gamer, if the core gameplay is there, LBP will still kick ass
Bluebrake @ Jan 8th 2008 9:56PM
They're showing the user-creation aspects because that's the most unique and exciting part of the game. Here, the more complex functions they add, the better. They honestly can't do too much, as long as the basics are accessible to beginners.
But remember that what got the world hooked on LBP in the first place wasn't the level editing, it was that video showing the 4-player cooperative physics-based platforming. That part of the game is completely separate and available out of the box, and players don't have to go any deeper if they don't want to.
samfish @ Jan 8th 2008 7:57PM
Meh. My interest in this game is now a fraction of what it once was. Show me actual gameplay footage and a purpose and I'll probably be excited.
As it stands, though, I've gone from mind blowing excitement over LBP to apathy to cynicism and now I'm starting to despair.
SGT Grumbles @ Jan 8th 2008 8:11PM
Too bad it's only on PS3. It looks interesting. Although I think I'll stick with Garry's Mod. Something about making a maze out of dumpster lids just appeals to me.
driven2sin @ Jan 8th 2008 8:19PM
maybe the users can actually make a game for the PS3 with this?
driven2sin @ Jan 8th 2008 8:24PM
I forgot to say that this is dogshit. has anyone seen ANY action so far?
phihexy27 @ Jan 8th 2008 9:38PM
"I forgot to say that this is dogshit. has anyone seen ANY action so far?"
Yeah total dogshit, does not look interesting or fun or anything just a big steamy pile of dogshit. You've got to be kidding me!!!
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Jan 8th 2008 10:01PM
I'm still pretty meh about this title. Don't get me wrong, it looks gorgeous and I do like the concept. But besides the creation thing, is there an actual point to the game? I mean is their a story mode, or does this game rely only on user created content? If that's the case I could see people getting tired of this after a few months leaving only a small group of dedicated gamers that will use this title to it's full potential.
