Resting their cred on "very reliable sources" and evidence that they claim to have seen, Xbox Evolved is reporting that Nintendo 64 classic Goldeneye will be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade shortly before Activision (the current 007 IP holder) releases their new James Bond title. The news comes (according to the site) after an agreement between Microsoft, Rareware, MGM Studios and Activision. XE says the game will feature new graphics and online multiplayer, and that other Rare games may be in the pipeline like Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark.
OK, sounds great, but is it true? We have no evidence one way or the other, but we think it would at least make sense for all the parties. Microsoft gets more solid XBLA titles, Rare (which is owned by Microsoft) reminds people of the company's glory days and MGM gets more publicity for James Bond. As for Activision, well, we already know they're not above pimping out a license for cash. We'll keep you updated.
[UPDATE: This looks like it was happening, but has been been put on hold.]

Dude, if this is true, I'm literally throwing a party. Provided that this is in fact a *port* true to the original with remade graphics and online multiplayer rather than a *remake* of the original. I absolutely love Goldeneye and I'm sure the large majority of the rest of gamers old enough to remember it agree with me. I grew up with that game and my N64. I'd be absolutely amazed if this happens and it'd be an instant purchase.
Seriously, if this happens, I can't wait to play this on LAN or close range Xbox Live if there's no LAN support. There's not a single person on my friend's dorm's floor with a 360 who wouldn't buy and play this. We've got a couple people with their N64's still hooked up who play splitscreen Goldeneye as it is.
Oh man, I am so psyched for this. Please let it be true to avoid the crushing disappointment otherwise.

Show some respect, rv! That game was a turning point in FPS gaming and is still an excellent shooter. I still play it and I know there's a lot of others who still play it. Online multiplayer and updated graphics will be more than enough to draw a large community. Although Goldeneye lacks a lot of what is defined as the current standard in FPS gaming, it has it's own simple timeless charm. It nails the basic elements like pacing, level design, and variety that makes it a great game to just pick up and play.
There's lots of modern FPS games that have been excellent in their own ways such as Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock, but by no means does that discredit the games that were excellent a decade before them.

I agree with you Dwells, it was an amazing game. That was basically the only game me and my friends played for about 2 years. I remember that one level with the platforms, rooms, with the golden gun up a ramp. I forgot what maps that was called. However, compared to shooters today, it would probably suck. I know I would probably get bored after playing a couple of times after playing games like halo 3, which essentially follows goldeneyes scheme (weapon pickup) but does it better(of course it would 10 years later). If its 400MS points, ok. 800, no way.

Hope is true... altough, I prefer an updated Goldeneye for the WiiWare, with Wii Pointer and online multiplayer.

Screw that, Online play and updated graphics destroy tacked on motion controls that prob wouldn't even be handled correctly for this. Plus since its Rare it'll never happen. On a side note, i would love an updated rc pro am on the 360 with online play.

But I'm not asking for motion controls... am asking for pointer capabilitie, ala Metroid Prime 3.

Any update to the controls, whether it is dual analog like most FPSs use or something else would be a huge improvement over the c buttons + R combination the N64 controller had.
Perfect Dark was an awesome game but playing it with only one analog was like performing surgery with a shovel.

yeah we all want it on the nintendo platform instead. That way we can visit online forums to get into our online matches by trading friends codes and we dont have to worry about mic support and talking with people, as well as no hd output.
Seriously tho your a complete utter fanboy of the wii if you would prefer a goldeneye re-release with online multiplayer to be on the wii. Theres absolutly no reason it should be put on the wii over the 360. That would jsut ruin the game.
Now I pray this rumour is true. Nothing would be greater (except perfect dark 64 with 12 player online support without framerate problems :p)

at mike: Couldn't agree with you more, only a wii fanboy or someone who, sadly is stuck with only a wii would say something like that. Updated graphics, 16 player online, achievements, HD...there really is no discussion that a xbla version would be better utilized.
and a big LOL at what you said about the wii's online capabilities. I'll take a crippled xbox live over that laughing-stock.

Wow yeah, that's some bull shit. You know what ruins FPS games for me? Analogue stick control. That was new with the N64, it sure beat the hell out of digital controls, but now that we've got the kind of precision you find in MP3 on the Wii (PC's have been there and done that), I can't go back to the kind of wave-the-cursor-in-enemys-general-direction kind of wobbly gameplay that analogue stick aiming offers.

It's because Rare is owned by Microsoft...
But I think it's possible a VC release (or better, WiiWare release). There are Microsoft titles on Nintendo systems... Age of Empires DS and soon Viva PiƱata DS (by Rare).

Well, if Rare knows whats good for them, they will have it an Unlockable or something. I wouldn't mind rocking new smooth graphics, but sometimes it's good to see some crazy "retro" graphics :-P
Remember when those were fucking SotA? xD
Anyways, i really like the idea, if it dosn't happen i'll be sad, but not as sad as if it happens and it totally sucks eggs.

I think you misunderstood Fernando. What he meant was that Goldeneye for the VC will be the exact same as the n64 version. While Goldeneye for XBLA will have new shit like graphics and online play. It makes sense.

I hope in the graphics rework that Activision adds some cans of Red Bull to litter the floor. Have to keep up those in game ads like they did in GH3.
I love the idea of the Arcade release but if Microsoft doesn't fix the DRM issue it will be just another title I pass on buying.

If you mean the one were you have to be logged in to play your arcade games if you have gotten a new console since you bought it, you could try calling MS support. I hear they give you MS points to rebuy them all or something. Of course, it's gonna be an painful experience just getting them to understand what you mean, so try it at your own risk.

The issue is that those that have a new system because of RRoD or Elite upgrades have issues with Arcade titles in the event the Live goes down.
You purhcased a game on your first system and it is tied to your gamertag and your original system. If the system is replaced you can only play the title if the gamertag that made the purchase is signed on. That means any gamertag on my original system could play the games I purchased, now I have to be signed in.
When Live goes down (which has been the case a lot lately) I can't sign in so even I can't play the games I own.
It is my understanding that there is a new process in place. They used to issue you a bunch of MS Points via codes you had to enter. Large collections means lots of codes and a ton of headaches. I guess they have went away from such a policy and now offer to make the correction to tie the games to your new system. The problem with that is that they will tell you they will do it but fail on the follow up end. A lot of people have been waiting months for them to do it.
I understand the need for some level of DRM but not at the cost of holding my paid content from me. We still have yet to get an official word from Microsoft about the issue and I guess they want to just wait until a Class Action comes their way before they address it.
The Class Action over the Live outage will probably get tossed but I have a feeling that if the DRM Arcade issue makes it to the courts it has a much better chance of having legs. Mainly because a lot of peoples issues are coming from replacement of defective product made by Microsoft.

Wow that sucks. I have two 360s and I sometimes download a game on one, and sometimes on the other. If I need it on the other one I just download it on the other one also from my purchase history, and I've never really had a problem. I have to have my Live ID on a memory card for the front slot though for that to work.
What I think is stupid is not being able to have two 360's have my Live ID at the same time. If I register 2 consoles under my name, I should be able to do that. You have have 5 machines with your itunes ID for listening to music you purchased....

I know this doesn't work for anyone but i kept the downloads and then searched for the titles again on marketplace with the gamertag i bought it with. I then clicked on "re-download" and it was done in less than a second. My arcade games are now playable offline. However, i don't think my DLC is :(

I've called customer support but they have no idea what I'm talking about when I bring up this issue. Luckily my 360 is always plugged into Live, but it's really annoying when my significant other wants to play Zuma and I have to log in on another controller first. Lame.

MS has known about it for years and continues to ignore it. Their customer service over it is horrendous.

I don't put any faith in rumors, and I don't care about Goldeneye, but if this means the original Banjo games could come out on XBLA, it might give me another reason to get a 360. (So far I only have one: Banjo 3.)

Well, this could definitely be something. Hopefully it has held up better against the ravages of time than Marathon: Durandal.
Didn't Nintendo publish the N64 cart? And don't they try to keep a vice grip on every game they've published? Maybe I'm totally off the mark there.

Yes, Nintendo was the publisher. They published most of Rare's games back in the day. With exception of their M-rated titles like Perfect Dark and Conker's BFD (which were self-published by Rare).

I'd rather have updated graphics and online multiplayer than a broken N64 ROM dump with zero additions. Because you know that's exactly what Nintendo would do.
Anyway, don't you guys think that you are looking back on this game with rose-colored glasses? Do you really think it stills holds up to today's standards? With so many shootaen gaems, who needs another online multiplayer shooter?
Bu a N64, 4 controllers, and the game itself, and play it the way it's meant to be played, it'll only cost you around 50 bucks anyway.
