Do you want a Portal 2?
MTV Multiplayer blog is asking an interesting question today, and it's one we thought we'd pose to you. You know we kind of, sorta love Portal in what is, on some level, a pretty unhealthy way. But do you think it needs a sequel? MTV's Stephen Totilo seems of two minds about it, saying that he understands that a sequel could be an improvement, but wonders if the game isn't just right the way it is.
For our part, we want a sequel to Portal, because we loves it. So the needs of a game, a tangle of electrons and intellectual property, must take a backseat to our desires, for we are flesh and bone. But what do you think? Do you believe Valve should leave well enough alone? Or do you think it needs another slice?

If they combined Portal with Peggle it would be the ultimate game.
Portal + Peggle = Portle.

Actually, Peggle Extreme has two levels with portals. You get it for free with the Portal: First Slice offer and with the Orange Box for PC.

nerrrrrrd @ Jan 10th 2008 12:31PM
hell yea, just create more advance levels and sell it for $30-40. i loved portal but the challenge didnt start till near the end.
paragraph @ Jan 10th 2008 12:31PM
Well, Portal works as-is, it's fine as-is, but more maps would be great. The way it stands Portal feels like an After-thought, like something thrown in to a group of things to help the others look better, or more valuble, however, i think expanding portal would work wery well.
A Remake, no, more Maps, 100% Totally Yes.
Hell, Give me a Map Maker and i'm game.
XanthouS @ Jan 10th 2008 12:42PM
It's called Hammer/Source SDK.
Jeff @ Jan 11th 2008 9:12PM
Right. Now if Valve were to release a "cooker" for those mods so they could work on 360 and PS3, then that would be fine. But, since I doubt they will, a package of additional maps/challenges would be a fantastic game to release. It wouldn't have to be "Portal 2" -- if they were to make the equivalent of VR missions for the game a lot of people would be very happy. Like me for example!
Savok @ Jan 10th 2008 12:32PM
I think it's up to the writers.
zelderman @ Jan 10th 2008 12:34PM
It would be interesting to see this as a real game. It would have it's moments.
Crilix @ Jan 10th 2008 12:34PM
When you play through Portal with the commentary on, they mention that they're only on the tip of realizing what gameplay potential Portal has. While I don't think they mentioned it directly, the overall tone leads you to believe that there'll be more at some point.

i want a sequel so bad! and what is with the new version made especially for Nvidia players that Valve is offering free? is that what i get for jumping on to the ATi HD3000 series? LAME!
Ignatius @ Jan 10th 2008 12:34PM
No, of course I don't want Portal 2.
What the hell kind of crack do people think gamers are smoking?
Of course we want a sequel to one of the most awesome games of 2007.

I'd gladly play a sequel, but incorporating the gun into Half Life or a new game in the same universe would be fine for me.
Nushio (NDF - Blue) @ Jan 10th 2008 12:47PM
Portal is much more than just the portal gun. It was the ambient, the "story", how you were treated and the humor.
Halo, Half Life, Crysis, Unreal Tourney, etc could have a portal gun for all I care, it doesn't matter since even if they had the portal gun, it wouldn't be "Portal 2"
paragraph @ Jan 10th 2008 12:49PM
I think that wouldn't lend itself well too HL, it would make some of the more complex "puzzle" aspects of it too easy. It could be done, but i don't think it would be very fun.
As for CS, or HL2D, i really don't think that this works for that kind of game... it's just too powerful and idea to "toss around" in a shooter.
:\
But you never know, devs have the power to suprise :-P
Mr.ESC @ Jan 10th 2008 12:53PM
I agree with Nushino. The best of portal is the clever commentary and the pitch-dark humor combined with the absolutely stunning Portal Mechanics (hear the commentary)
Now that the portal gun should be an unlockable in the next Half life games. For example if we ever get a new Orange Box (Black Box if it includes Left 4 Dead) and you get all the achievements it would be awesome to unlock the portal gun for Episode 3,it would be like the Katana in Halo 3 after you get all the Achievements, you know a reward for your nerdiness so we can all go **** ourselves.

I'm not saying the same HL reissued with the portal gun so I don't know what you mean by making the puzzles too easy... the game would have to integrate portal type puzzles into the mix of things.
To make a sequel that doesn't step out of the labs would be retreading the same ground.
I'd just like to see it incorporated into other games rather than take another trip through a different lab (not that I wouldn't happily do so).
In a multiplayer sense, I'd love to set traps with the thing, or quickly jump to a good sniper point, or set up a turret aimed at the portal and running around popping the other end up in front of enemies...
All I'm saying is sequel or no, I want to keep the mechanic around.
JakubK666 @ Jan 10th 2008 1:02PM
Guys you as far as the commentary tells us, Portal is pretty much a bitch to run with Source Engine.
While the original game has hardly any animations or actions as well as a minimalistic design , it would be difficult to put the Portal gun into Episode 3.
And even if it did happen, there would probably be many limitations which would really piss people off.
Andrew Timson @ Jan 10th 2008 5:41PM
It was a bitch to get it into the engine in the first place. But all of the code work is done; it should be fairly trivial to create further games using portals, as I understand it...
WiNG @ Jan 10th 2008 12:37PM
Portal could use extra levels, but a sequel would make little sense considering the ending to the game.
I'd rather have an expansion pack or something.
Fredd @ Jan 10th 2008 12:41PM
I wud love to see a portal, but I would like it to expand the portals and dive in the murky waters of the space time continuum. Then you would have all sorts of crazy antics that involve you going back in time to interfere with your self. Now imagine that
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 10th 2008 1:23PM
And just how the hell would you do that in a game for real. You'd be touching on aspects of Paradox, which by definition, is impossible.
Fredd @ Jan 10th 2008 2:14PM
Yes you would, but a paradox situation could be solved by the simple mention 5th dimension alternate realities, plus, a little time travel never hurt anybody. Look at Marty McFly, he invented a fresh new sound that someone was looking for.
Plus the puzzles don't need to involve you (the character) or an infinite spectrum of time travel. You could, say, step into a portal and stop time, or step into one and time slows down, or speeds up. It doesn't necessarily mean shoot portal, end up in dinosaur times. It would need limitations, which the game already has. You cant just shoot the portals anywhere. I'm pretty sure the writers can think of some fun way to use that game dynamic.
XanthouS @ Jan 10th 2008 12:43PM
I have faith that if Valve does create a true sequel to Portal, it will be in good taste and won't be a cheap cash-in.
Dustin @ Jan 10th 2008 12:49PM
Yes, Valve's commitment to quality and the "it'll come when it's done" approach is fantastic, although sometimes frustrating (erm... Episode 3? How long will we wait?).
I do believe they won't let us down, whatever they do. Besides, EA is probably so pleased with Portal's HUGE SUCCESS that they won't much get in the way with whatever Valve wants to do.
Dustin @ Jan 10th 2008 12:43PM
It would be hard to make a true "sequel" to Portal, but it's such a hard decision... more maps, or a whole new storyline?
The storyline in Portal was just so completely refreshing that OF COURSE we want something like it, or even just MORE of it, but it would be hard to come up with something that wouldn't degrade the original.
More maps would instantly sell like crazy, I'm sure, and would probably be very inexpensive to publish. Plus, unless there were enough of them, they would most likely be distributed through Steam, XBL and PSN, so there would be next to no publishing costs.
n0v4 @ Jan 10th 2008 1:05PM
Why can't we have BOTH?
It would be great!
While they're developing a new storyline they could make an expansion of maps for the first one.
And anyway it is sure they are making a sequel: Still Alive anyone?
Sam @ Jan 10th 2008 9:53PM
I think it will tie in to Half Life 3, SPOILERS:
With GlaDOS talking about "you don't know how long its been" and "I'm the only thing separating 'you' from 'them'." I think they pretty much already have the storyline from 2, I'm guessing it will end up going into a parallel storyline with Half-Life, which would be pretty neat to see play out.
Brad @ Jan 10th 2008 12:45PM
Map packs.
cakers @ Jan 10th 2008 12:46PM
Are you all the ones that buy the Disney straight to vhs sequels? Portal is a masterpiece and should be left as is.
Cyro @ Jan 10th 2008 1:21PM
Why don't you believe they can make a great sequel?
I think they are capable of doing this and doing it right.
Obie @ Jan 10th 2008 7:28PM
Shallow sequels suck yes, but name one Valve game that does that? And sequels that rock...well...rock!
mcatrage @ Jan 10th 2008 12:47PM
Of course. Has Valve made a bad game yet?
paragraph @ Jan 10th 2008 12:51PM
*cough* Source Remakes *cough*
Don't get me wrong, CS:S is fine and all, but CS was fine too, and there was zero need to re-issue HL with the source engine other than to make a quick buck...
But i guess at the heart they are still good games, so i guess i do agree.
XanthouS @ Jan 10th 2008 12:58PM
CS:S was packaged for FREE with HL2.
If you don't think HL2 alone is worth $50 (not to mention the right to download literally hundreds of user-made mods for years and years to come) there's something seriously wrong with you.
Try to think before you cry "cash-in".
CubeGuy @ Jan 10th 2008 2:09PM
Without CS:S, there would be no surfing.
Surf maps. Look it up.
