No sequel. Just give Gordon the portal gun in episode 3.

Seconded. I sort of assumed this would be happening anyways. Althought it might be cool if Portal two led up to HL:Ep 3. In it, the player encounters Gordon and has to outsmart him. But of course get's his ass kicked because it's Gordon Freeman, and in the beginning of Ep. 3 he's got it as part of his arsenal, along with the gravity gun.

Just think...using the gravity gun to propel object through portals?!? *drool*

Just think:

NiGHTS: Into Dreams was a short, engaging, well designed game.

It gained a cult following.

Years later they made a sequel that would crush the dreams of man-boys everywhere.

PLZ NO MOAR

If they don't make a sequel it seems like they're gonna continue it in Half-Life 2 episode 3 in some way.

I'd love to see more games with portals. I don't necessarily think Portal needs a direct sequel, though. As much as I love Aperture Science, GlaDOS, cake, and the weighted companion cube, I have a hard time imagining a sequel that wouldn't feel like it was just beating a dead horse.

No, I think Portal 2 would be a bad idea. I don't think there's anything left to do with the story. It's perfectly fine and self contained.

I'd much rather have lots of new proffessionally made maps as add-ons to the existing Portal.

I'd love a 40 or 50-level expansion pack. The gameplay's fine, just add lots more levels over Steam!

Simple. Throw the portal gun in the last hour of Half-Life episode 3 (since Apature Science crosses over into the Half-Life universe near the end of episode 2) and then you'll have a combat variant on par with the upgraded gravity gun at the end of Half life 2. Voila, portal gameplay with new twists without having to recreate the ambiance that worked so well, which would not work a second time around.

portal isn't a game, it's like a giant demo. Obviously it's going to have it's own full-length stand-alone title whether it's with our escaped test subject or If gordon freeman picks up the handy device.

Portal 2 should be to Portal as Aliens was to Alien. In Portal 2 you come back as a heavily armed version of the protagonist from Portal (think "Ripley") who frees captives of the new Portal facility. Add lots of guns and aliens plus a great march soundtrack. I think James Cameron should helm the sequel.

What do you do when you want MOAR, but don't want to kill the already established closed story (after all, nobody likes patched-on BS on a universe which needs no explanation)?

I'm not sure if I would want a full fledged sequel only because I'm not sure how they would do it with the way the game ended and all. I definitely want more Portal, but maybe they could just flesh out the original more by adding new levels more content et cetera. If they did this and released it for $50 I would definitely buy. Maybe they could even do a prequel that explained more about how it all came about. So, yeah more Portal.

*Gasp* I have no intention of ever playing any Half Life (I started to but then got bored to death) so... "just giving Gordon the portal gun later on" is a really shitty idea for those of us who don't care about HL. I'd say if they make a new game, they should release it as a separate game for $20.

Valve has said that Portal is part of the Half Life Universe, and the player-character in Portal will have a significant role in future Half Life games. So a Portal sequel of sorts has all but been confirmed.

Whether it's the sequel we WANT is another issue entirely. Quite frankly, everything Valve touches seems to turn to gold, so I'm not worried. Bring on Portal 2!

Portal doesn't need a sequel. If it didn't have the deadpan humour, then Portal would just be a game where you tried all the gravity defying actions that popped into your head to see what happened. Then you'd put it down and go and play a good game.

Have any of you guys played to the end of Half-Life 2: Episode 2? If you have, you know for a fact how Aperture is coming into the story. I'm almost certain that means that there's gonna be some portal gun involvement.

There isn't any good reason not to, another game would be perfect, and maybe lengthen it a little bit too.
It would have to be a sequel you would need to play the other game first to play though, or we'd just have a bunch of those get-yourself-used-to-the-game levels.(Not that those were bad, just easy)

Yes, but they shouldn't start the sequel off as you starting as a new test subject. It should be something where you understand that controls/portal gun but you have to find your way out of the system again.

no, i don't think portal needs a sequel at all. i'd much rather valve direct their efforts toward another amazing, innovative game with its own, different sense of charm and style. making a 'sequel' is pretty much a way to sidestep creativity and originality and almost inevitably turns out a disappointment; see: katamari damacy, etc.

Well, if Valve left well enough alone when they made Half Life, we wouldn't even have portal, or Counter Strike, or Team Fortress and Team Fortes 2. I think the real question here is if they can pull a sequel off that won't be a disappointing mess (yeah, I'm looking at you Halo 2).

I would love to see something like Portal with Combine soldiers in the room shooting at you an you have to use the portal gun to deal with them. Unlike the robots, they can run around the room.

Maybe have GlaDos team up with you to fight the invaders, but you still can't trust her because she keeps trying to trick you.

I agree, Portal is special, and I would hate to see a simple retread of it, but I think that a sequel could work. I like the idea of the player having to work with GLaDOS in the Portal 2 to carry out whatever plan she's been cooking up. "Still Alive" seems to imply, at least to me, that the entire thing, even your escape and battle with GLaDOS was an elaborate test, and you have succeeded, giving the computer the data she needs to help "those still alive." Could GLaDOS be cooking up some kind of a scheme to fight back against the Combine, and need you to act as her avatar?

In System Shock 1, SHODAN played the role of your main antagonist and tormentor almost exactly as GLaDOS does (GLaDOS might as well be SHODAN, the similarity is so great), yet in SS2, you find yourself doing her dirty work to ensure your mutual survival against a common foe. Portal 2 could easily follow in this path, and I think it would be heaps of fun.

No, I loved Portal and all a sequel will do is ruin it. They will try to do it "bigger and better" and as usual with sequel games, it will more than likely SUCK. If anything integrate it more into Half-Life 3, but don't take the best game ever and mess it up by trying to improve on it.

there's more innovation to bring to the portal system
for instance, changing the size of the portals in a ratio, making a an object going through the smaller come out larger, enemy test subjects, if aperture science made the portal lab there can be other labs testing different portal designs
and for that matter valve could just make a sequel to portal using another ingenious puzzle element, including the portals as the backbone, thus increasing the game's depth
there's tons of possibilities, finding an aperture scientist that got stuck before the staff evacuation, all the previous orbs that were used on glados before being replaced, hell include the living quarters of the lab, have scientists attack you
find prototype portal guns, like the pocket dimension that uses a gravitational stall to throw variables out of the same portal they came in, portals that can attach to air, turn solid, duplicate, divide, cancel momentum, more than two portal systems that can freeze the extra, fake portals (personal portals), transmogrifying portals, element-specific portals
the game was perfect, as far as valve took it, but it can go farther, and be better, and the universe they placed it in is capable of exploring these possibilities and still keeping the freaky charm that the game had.
most importantly, if valve doesn't take portal as far as it can go, someone else will, the only reason there haven't been copies of portal so far is because everyone knows its valve's system, if they leave it behind someone else will pick it up
