Have any NVIDIA hardware installed on your machine? If so, you're entitled to a free extended demo of Portal, the best game of 2007. Entitled Portal: First Slice, the demo features more content than the normal demo, and is available free to all NVIDIA customers through a new partnership between Valve and the hardware manufacturer.
The offer is accessible through Steam, which will scan your computer to confirm the presence of NVIDIA hardware before making the offer available (creepy). Game|Life also reports that in addition to the Portal: First Slice, demo, NVIDIA customers can also download Peggle Extreme, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, and Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast for free through the same offer. Not too shabby.

This is cool, but it really sucks for me. I just bought HL2:DM off Steam a couple of days ago for $9.95, and now they're giving it away?

I'm sure it was just held over from the full version of the game, but I was amused that when I went to change the video settings in "Portal: The First Slice" there was a large "Plays best with ATI" banner on the menu window. Not surprisingly a recent update got rid of it.

Did anyone notice that this was free for Nvidia users but if you go to the video settings it says nice a clear "Best Used on ATI Radeon Graphics". This kinda feels like a cheap shot to nvidia and its users.

Where is there a normal demo of Portal? The Steam site doesn't list one.

So that's why Peggle Extreme has been on my games list for a while now.

Question - I haven't fired up Peggle Extreme on my Steam list yet either.. is it the full version of the game? I always kind of figured it was a demo.

Demoish. 10 levels, only unicorn powerup, but using different levels from the normal set, I think. (including sone portal-gimmic ones, which I don't think exist in the normal set)

First the Germany-only demo of Team Fortress 2, now a "demo" of Portal exclusive to users of nVidia cards. Valve sure has been doing odd things in the recent weeks. Though I am living in Germany and only have nVidia cards, I ask myself why Valve can't just release demos for everyone. Exactly that is long overdue...

I clicked the link for the offer and accepted my free games but then it said, "This offer has already been activated using a different Steam account."
I have only one STEAM account. I can assure you that I have not played Portal. This laptop is brand new and is my only machine. How can I have possibly already activated the games? Why can't technology just work :(

The same thing happened to me when I tried to activate Valve's similar ATI offer. Apparently, if other posters are to be believed, this type of problem is pretty widespread yet Valve refuses to address it.

This is awesome, but it kinda sucks that the servers are flooded. That's ok, I can wait for my free stuff.
