Portal 'First Slice' extended demo free for NVIDIA customers only
Have any NVIDIA hardware installed on your machine? If so, you're entitled to a free extended demo of Portal, the best game of 2007. Entitled Portal: First Slice, the demo features more content than the normal demo, and is available free to all NVIDIA customers through a new partnership between Valve and the hardware manufacturer.
The offer is accessible through Steam, which will scan your computer to confirm the presence of NVIDIA hardware before making the offer available (creepy). Game|Life also reports that in addition to the Portal: First Slice, demo, NVIDIA customers can also download Peggle Extreme, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, and Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast for free through the same offer. Not too shabby.

So the cake isn't a lie?
Jtenma @ Jan 10th 2008 9:12AM
No, no, no, no one said anything about cake..IT'S STILL A LIE!!!
Don't even try it...
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 10th 2008 12:06PM
Funny thing is, the cake wasn't a lie. There was cake all along. Down in the basement, where she's still alive. With the companion cube.
Alex McKee @ Jan 10th 2008 9:06AM
Woah! Cool. I wanted to try Portal, but I'm cheap and without windows. Oh well.
Slayer @ Jan 10th 2008 9:19AM
Didn't ATI do something like this?
Jerk Face @ Jan 10th 2008 9:20AM
Is that, like, a full copy of HL2:DM? If so I might have to tell a few of my friends about this who don't have it. It's pretty damned fun at LAN parties (and when you're bored with TF2.)
baby sea tuna @ Jan 10th 2008 9:24AM
First Peggle Extreme, now *this*?! I call "no fairsies!"
Apreche @ Jan 10th 2008 9:25AM
This is interesting because Valve has traditionally been more friendly with ATi.
Jerk Face @ Jan 10th 2008 9:33AM
Yea. Tis true, verily.
Gangsta Smurf @ Jan 10th 2008 9:54AM
PIE?
Francisco @ Jan 10th 2008 10:00AM
This is cool, but it really sucks for me. I just bought HL2:DM off Steam a couple of days ago for $9.95, and now they're giving it away?
Jerk Face @ Jan 10th 2008 10:02AM
Busted!
Avarice @ Jan 10th 2008 10:09AM
I'm sure it was just held over from the full version of the game, but I was amused that when I went to change the video settings in "Portal: The First Slice" there was a large "Plays best with ATI" banner on the menu window. Not surprisingly a recent update got rid of it.
atari6 @ Jan 10th 2008 9:33PM
LOL nice...
soo.. rowsdower... is that a stupid name?
Geo @ Jan 10th 2008 10:10AM
Ok im confused; is this Portal demo only or the entire game....??
NATO_Duke @ Jan 10th 2008 10:12AM
Its an extended demo.
Pretty damn good deal for these to be free. I use NVIDIA cards, but that damn Vista is the devil! I haven't used my PC for gaming in a while because of it.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 10th 2008 12:07PM
What the hell does "Extended Demo" mean? is it like the first 15 levels (of 19).
CJC @ Jan 10th 2008 12:24PM
It's just the first 10 rooms, I believe.
Youthinized @ Jan 10th 2008 10:47AM
Wow, this Peggle is like Crack. I def. can't wait for this to come to XBL now!
Tony @ Jan 10th 2008 10:50AM
My PS3 has the RSX, so I hereby claim my free copy of this game.
Mr.ESC @ Jan 10th 2008 10:52AM
Since no one is gonna say it, I will.
This was a triumph.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 10th 2008 12:08PM
We've yet to see if it is a huge success or not.
Dark @ Jan 10th 2008 11:10AM
Did anyone notice that this was free for Nvidia users but if you go to the video settings it says nice a clear "Best Used on ATI Radeon Graphics". This kinda feels like a cheap shot to nvidia and its users.
Dark @ Jan 10th 2008 11:11AM
Apparently someone did notice. whoops.
Mike Jenkins @ Jan 10th 2008 11:37AM
Where is there a normal demo of Portal? The Steam site doesn't list one.
Core Xii @ Jan 10th 2008 11:43AM
So that's why Peggle Extreme has been on my games list for a while now.
Jerk Face @ Jan 10th 2008 12:15PM
Question - I haven't fired up Peggle Extreme on my Steam list yet either.. is it the full version of the game? I always kind of figured it was a demo.
Psaakyrn @ Jan 10th 2008 1:07PM
Demoish. 10 levels, only unicorn powerup, but using different levels from the normal set, I think. (including sone portal-gimmic ones, which I don't think exist in the normal set)
feisty xan @ Jan 10th 2008 12:06PM
First the Germany-only demo of Team Fortress 2, now a "demo" of Portal exclusive to users of nVidia cards. Valve sure has been doing odd things in the recent weeks. Though I am living in Germany and only have nVidia cards, I ask myself why Valve can't just release demos for everyone. Exactly that is long overdue...
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 10th 2008 12:10PM
What? Demos for everyone?

MrTyzik @ Jan 10th 2008 12:41PM
I clicked the link for the offer and accepted my free games but then it said, "This offer has already been activated using a different Steam account."
I have only one STEAM account. I can assure you that I have not played Portal. This laptop is brand new and is my only machine. How can I have possibly already activated the games? Why can't technology just work :(
hi2u @ Jan 10th 2008 5:03PM
The same thing happened to me when I tried to activate Valve's similar ATI offer. Apparently, if other posters are to be believed, this type of problem is pretty widespread yet Valve refuses to address it.
Andrew Parker @ Jan 11th 2008 2:21PM
I had the same problem. Totally lame.
wickedpheonix @ Jan 10th 2008 1:19PM
I don't care, already have the Orange Box - if you're a gamer and don't have it either your computer is too old or you're completely broke.
JPN @ Jan 10th 2008 3:30PM
It took me a while to see what they did there, with the title...First Slice...that's great.
cbroz91 @ Jan 10th 2008 7:54PM
This is awesome, but it kinda sucks that the servers are flooded. That's ok, I can wait for my free stuff.
DarkNarcoleptic @ Jan 12th 2008 3:47AM
Um...so where is the demo? I installed and everything but the demo shows. Not that I don't already have Portal >_>
Drake @ Jan 11th 2008 4:37PM
i think this is pretty gosh darn goodspecially for those of us who are broke
