They're killing BC in Japan? I can't help but feel this is a bad move. The PS2 is still popular and is consistently outselling the PS3 in Japan; by taking away the ability to play PS2 games, aren't Sony just lowering the appeal of the PS3?

I disagree with the 40 GB being the best deal. Sure, its an awesome deal but until we see the $100 PS2, the 80 Gb model is a pretty good way to extend the life of your PS2 library without adding an extra device.

I thought Japan had the 80GB model, too? This article makes it sound like they only have the 40GB. What's the deal?

I love my 60gb, after the price drop its the best deal and the best ps3 (because of the emotion chip). dropping BC is stupid, i imagine they introduce the 80 there.
I haven't played any ps2 games on mine yet, handful of PS1. I plan to replay snakeeater before mGS4s out and my gf wanted to play ddr, but i would need the adapters. so she plays on the ps2 in the bedroom.

It can be argued that a used 60 gigger is a better value than a new 40 gigger.

I'd say losing BC is a shame, especially that early 60 gig version that works without fail. The 80 gig with the software BC seems best to me, though I suppose it's still more than most want to pay- making the 40 gig the version of choice for most.

It's a shame losing b/c but it didn't really hurt sales when it happened in Europe and apparently the PS3 sold 1.2 million consoles this christmas, some of them had to be the forty gig. And also, the sales in Japan picked up after the forty gig came out there, I think it will do fine, but it does suck for people that did want it for b/c.

I imagine BC can be restored once the PS3 is profitable and demand is there. While it would be better to maintain the hallmark of the Playstation brand (near perfect BC), business dictates that they shave non-essential parts off the cost.

It sucks, but BC editions will always be around for those that really want one. In the US, Sams Club still has a large stash of 60's. I bought one for a friend that really wanted full BC.

Kind of a good thing if you ask me. IMO the less SKUs the better.

Thats what google news tells me anyways.

Since I don't own a ps2 - getting the 60gig just after the 80/40s came out was the best thing I could do. I own more used PS2 games now then PS3 games
