So in this podcast a reader asked you to share any moments of "game immersion" you've experienced (looking for snipers on roofs, trying to hit the left bumper when passing through a dark area, etc.).

In the mid-90's, I loved fighting games of the 2D variety. I spent a bazillion hours playing King of Fighters '94. If you know the game, you know that the game opens with Terry shouting "Okay!" as a challenge to the Art of Fighting team, and Ryo Sakazaki responding with "Ora Ora!"

Now, them Neo-Geo Mega Shock cartridges waren't cheap (like 200 bucks!). Consequently I had a whopping three games to play, and so I probably heard that KOF opening hundreds of times.

At that time, I spent the rest of my free time training in Shotokan karate. In my dojo, during basic practice the instructor would explain how to do this or that technique, and then the class would shout "Osu!" as a form of spirited acknowledgement (like the Marines' "oo-rah!"). So one night, halfway through a drill the instructor tells us to change up something, and -- ever the guy with gusto -- I shouted back: "O-KAAAAAAY!!!"

As a guest at a cocktail party regards the host's dog, who -- show-quality pedigree notwithstanding -- spends a few idle moments looking smart before making the sweetest of love to the beslacked leg of said guest, so I was regarded by my fellows with surprise, embarrassment, and not a little distaste. Feeling guilty as the proverbial barking dog, I started to try to explain, but realized that the truth would redeem my dignity not in the slightest.
