Nyko's wireless Wii nunchuk wins CNET's CES gaming award
Nyko's wireless nunchuk peripheral was awarded CNET's best in gaming at CES this year. The wireless nunchuk "connects" through a dongle attached to the bottom of the Wiimote (seen above) and runs off two AAA batteries which allegedly provide 30 hours of use; the cost is $30 and should be out by late January or early February.
Nyko actually introduced many new peripherals at this year's CES. Coincidentally this would be the second year in a row that Nyko introduced a relatively useful product for the Wii, last year they came through with the Wiimote charge station which we're told has sold very well. Of course, not every Nyko product has to be reasonable, the Wii Party station is still one of the most atrociously awesome things we saw in the past year.

Best would be an official rechargeable battery kit from Nintendo.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 11th 2008 11:28PM
In fact... I'm waiting for Nintendo to release a recharge kit, ala 360... and for a Nintendo wireless nunchuck.

rechargables from like enigizer and such are much better than any of the battery packs for either 360 or wii 1st or 3rd party they all have a low Mah rating, my enigizer 2500 MaH batteries last much longer and charge in only 15 minutes
mr nimblewick @ Jan 12th 2008 12:51AM
Do they make rechargeable AAA's?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 12th 2008 1:16AM
They're AAs.
Note that Nintendo's manual says EXPLICITLY NOT to use rechargeables in the Wiimote. This despite the fact that they chew down batteries quickly.
It's ridiculous Greenpeace gave N kudos for a console that chews controller batteries and N tells you not to use rechargeables, plus it uses 10X as much power when off as other consoles.
Mr.ESC @ Jan 12th 2008 1:18AM
I think so; I have seen rechargeable AA and AAA in hobby stores. In fact I have seen rechargeable D batteries.
I rather get the official product because rechargeable batteries (depending of the manufacturer) are expensive, more useful but expensive.
mr nimblewick @ Jan 12th 2008 1:28AM
I was referring to the nunchuck: "runs off two AAA batteries"
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 12th 2008 11:04AM
Yes. I see. There are rechargeable AAAs in this world. They have about 1/3rd of the capacity of a AA, but for many purposes they last plenty long enough.
Lifted 0ne 4l9 (NDF - Fire!) @ Jan 12th 2008 11:38AM
thats bullshit, the recharbles last much longer than non recharbles and much longer than recharble packs currently available for the wii and i been usin them over a year with no problems,
yes they do make recharble AAA's and you dont have to go to a hobby shop places like CVS and supermarkets usually have them, were AA's are at 2500 MaH AAA'a are at 900 MaH
DeadPlasmaCell @ Jan 12th 2008 1:14PM
Yea, I have set of 4 energizer rechargeable AAA's for remotes and what not.. they work great. Ne who Nintendo needs to get with the times and make ALL of the stuff wireless and jump into the HD game..
Liqideos @ Jan 11th 2008 11:28PM
Nyko already made a better charging kit, so why would they spend the time developing and producing when the third parties are doing the work for you?
It is comforting to see that in some respects, after market video game equipment CAN outperform OEM parts. It's a start anyway.
How the industry has gone on for so long with such a piss poor after market without someone seeing a huge opportunity to step in and produce quality accessories is odd.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 11th 2008 11:47PM
The Nyko kit doesn't drop it well every time and the version I've used at least doesn't work with the Wiimote condom.
So yeah, I think there's room for a better charge kit.
I can't believe this thing won an award. I can't really see how a cordless nunchuk is an improvement over the regular one. More batteries and just to to remove a cord that wasn't a problem anyway?
killerpickle @ Jan 12th 2008 12:12AM
The cord is a problem. It gets in the way. When you are sitting down it rests on your lap. The only reason nintendo didn't pack a wireless nunchuk with the Wii is to keep the price point as low and gain as much of a price advantage as possible.
Liqideos @ Jan 12th 2008 12:27AM
The Wii glove was implemented after the Charger Kit was. I would expect a hardware revision this year. Also...you actually use the glove? Everyone I've encountered finds it uncomfortable.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jan 12th 2008 1:19AM
True. I'm playing Galaxy right now and my lap is in deep trouble because it has a cord draped across from it. I may never walk again, I think the weight of the cord is blocking my femoral artery.
killerpickle @ Jan 12th 2008 1:35AM
Not deep trouble. But uncomfortable. Unless you like wires constantly draped across your lap. Different strokes for different folks...
Vegan @ Jan 12th 2008 2:45AM
It sits in your lap? Oh noes, the horror!
hegemonyhog @ Jan 12th 2008 10:23AM
I remember the subtle pain of a childhood spent with Nintendo cords draped across my young, lithe legs. It's why I'm incapable of holding down a long-term relationship.
Roto13 @ Jan 12th 2008 12:08PM
Gets in the way of what? What exactly are you doing in your lap when you're playing?
... Do I really want an answer?
killerpickle @ Jan 12th 2008 12:54PM
Wow I guess I'm the only one in the entire world who constantly fiddled with the cord so that it wouldn't be touching any part of my lap or leg. OCD?
kevinski @ Jan 12th 2008 10:48PM
I realize that Dragon Blade wasn't exactly the greatest game, but God...whipping yourself in the face while you're swinging the sword just isn't fun. Yes, I realize that you can just waggle the Wii Remote, but that's just lame...and it's difficult to time combos that way. I'll be picking a couple of these up.
754Boy @ Jan 12th 2008 1:01AM
That 360 charger looks badass!! Hope it comes in black too......
shadowchaoscontrol @ Jan 12th 2008 6:49AM
i kinda like the wii guitar, but i'd rather have an official les paul
t_m @ Jan 12th 2008 7:56AM
Why would a company that makes a charge station, because they saw people were annoyed by having to change the batteries in their wiimotes so much, make a wireless nunchuk that NEEDS BATTERIES???
Why isn't it rechargeable? Preferably with an addon sation that clips onto the original charge station?
Psaakyrn @ Jan 12th 2008 8:05AM
So that they can sell you the rechargable version later.
Markusdragon @ Jan 12th 2008 8:39AM
Wonder how much Nyko paid for this award.
Assuming that everything given out by CNET is given out on the basis of ad revenue...
Howard-the-Duck @ Jan 12th 2008 11:08AM
The fret buttons on that GH3 controller don't look very good at all.
Eric @ Jan 12th 2008 7:35PM
I like that Telecaster-style controller. Since they don't seem to think people want to buy extra controllers, I might buy one.
kingdom2000 @ Jan 13th 2008 1:02AM
I can't help but wonder how much the "win" by Nyko set them back. I just hope whatever the cost is its not passed to the customer.
