As pictured, the February issue of Game Informer blows the lid off Insomniac's Resistance 2, and thanks to a few good-mannered subscribers posting on NeoGAF (please thank your mommies and daddies for teaching you to share) we get a peak inside the cookie jar. And my, what cookies await!
The Resistance sequel will apparently feature two separate campaigns, one dedicated to single-player and a second for multiplayer. While the second campaign supports two-player split-screen for local play, once taken online, as many as 8 players can take on the Chimera invasion – or will we be fighting the Cloven this time? But the real treats seem to be stored in the competitive multiplayer modes, as Resistance 2 promises to support up to 60 players online – and not just 30-on-30 chaos. Some multiplayer modes will divide participants into 4- to 8-player squads each with its own virtual lobby. Squads will be tasked with unique objectives, and gameplay will be further diversified through three basic character classes: heavy weaponry, special ops (think: sniper) and medic. Insomniac's even promising an extensive stat-tracking database on MyResistance.net, coupled with faster matchmaking than any game of 2007. Oh snap! You listening to this, Bungie?

Of course, you meant to say "obstacles".

Awesome. But 60 player online isn't insane:it's a full scale war.
Looks like my PS3 might have a good year after all.

I would like to draw your attention to the "How will it work?" topic, 7th paragraph down.
It reads:
"Developers will determine just how massively multiplayer their Xbox Live titles will be. The gaming servers are all controlled by Microsoft (and to some degree Sega with their crop of XBL games), so that the game creators simply have to request the bandwidth they'll need to get the desired result. "
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/360/360183p1.html
Microsoft didnt spend 500 million dollars on stat trackers. :0 snap!
LOL jk on the oh snap! part, it's all in good fun ;)

"The vast majority of games on Xbox Live will run peer-to-peer, with players hosting their own games. This of course excludes persistent world games, which will be client-server based. Peer-to-peer games however, will still send a "heartbeat" back to the Xbox Live data centers, for the purpose of keeping track of game stats and keeping other online participants abreast of a player's whereabouts online."
http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/features/xbox-live-details/67111/
and I haven't been able to find any factual information that XBL is indeed run through dedicated servers...

Easo also just to try to clear up things for you. You wrote.."and PSN has dedicated servers, when it actually connects to other ps3 for its online play. Hell Some PS3 games even give you the option to host matches on your own box."
Dedicated servers just mean that the server(PS3) is not used for play by the host. It is Dedicated to hosting only. So in Warhawk terms the blue servers are dedicated (Sony's) whereas the white servers can either be P2P OR Dedicated.
P2P is when others can 'log onto' your PS3 or xbox while you are both hosting a game and playing it at the same time. This is the part that affects lag the most. And where you'll hear people talking about host advantage and such.
As others have said in Warhawk you actually have the option of running a dedicated server but you can't play in it. Which is why I will be getting multiple PS3's as my girl loves her some Warhawk, but we can't splitscreen and rank up. My goal is to have a dedicated server and 2 additional ps3's for some awesome dual hdtv coop action with her. Lots of PS3 mmo's and such on the way. :)
Incidentally this was why I was hoping for multi tv out as this would have been a cheaper split screen solution. Each 'split screen' would have its own tv.

So we are now to the point where people are buying multiple gaming systems so they can just use them as servers?

seeing as getting 2 ps3's at $400 would still be cheaper than a gaming PC, I think he's getting a good deal. Not to mention there's more worthwhile exclusives to play on a ps3, and it has a better future than pc gaming right now. you can't deny that if the big games for ps3 come out this year including home, that this is the ps3's year.
PC has, uhhh...err wait give me a minute. Oh, uhh that one game coming out this year, crysis right? wait what, that was last year?? oh...well umm what about that uhh other one??
^ sums up this year for exclusive pc games

Holy frickin balls has this story generated a lot of attention...
You should [UPDATE] the title to include the phrase, "ZOMGWTFBBQ."
After readin everyone elses thoughts on this, I will reply thusly:
Dude! [someone else]-
Your [Someone else's opinion] is TOTALLY off!! [Own superior opinion] is correct because [various biased reasons]. [Someone else's reasons] are just dumb and biased and sound like [console fanboy term]!
Furthermore [four letter word x infinity +2 followed by random bitching rant about Microsoft and/or Sony and/or Nintendo].
Shows over, good day, and play ball.

I do not care for multiplayer. Instead fix the two biggest flaws:
1) Make the game not look like crap.
2) Actually come up with a fucking interesting narrative.
Then call me back.

Am I the only person here who is growing utterly tired of the FPS genre in general? This constant attempt to outdo the current multiplayer champ (Currently Halo 3 and COD4) is growing old, boring and well, just not interesting.
I want games with some damn substance. Games that are a new experience. Every FPS controls the same, and for the most part plays the same. Aim at enemy, pull trigger, repeat. I knew I had grown tired of FPS games when I was unable to make it through games like Resistance, The Darkness, Halo 3 and COD4. I mean, every single one of these games got an average review score of 9/10. I wish these companies would start looking at what Kevin Levine did with Bioshock, which was the only FPS I've been able to enjoy since Halo 2.
The end result of this constant one-up contest of multiplayer modes, number of players, etc. is me paying $60 to begin a 6 hour long campaign that is so lethargic, dry, boring and repetitive that I find myself turning off the system and saying to myself "I should have known better" after an hour or so of playing. My reward for this complete lack of an innovative or enjoyable experience? The opportunity to play online where the idea of fun is to repeat the same fucking experience over and over again. Kill some dudes, respawn...repeat.
I'm looking forward to games similar to Bioshock. Battlefield: Bad Company looks like it will have a decent single player with a good story. I hope it takes longer than 6 hours to beat.

PS3 is great, but I don't go onto halo 3 forums screaming about it... so why do 360ers do it?
RFOM was i great game, though a sequel was obvious with that ending.

Don't you 360 owners have anything better to do? oh wait, 8 player matches with lag? obviously not XD

I"ll be honest....more isn't always better.
I've really tried to like RESISTANCE on PS3.....but there's something just missing. I actually enjoy WARHAWK MULTIPLAYER more. Even with it being the only game that pretty much everyone bought for PS3 at launch.....i found the online multiplayer to not be that astounding and compared to any # of other FPS....it really came up lacking.
Does it have the intensity of COD4? Does it have the balance and community of HALO? Did it have the strategic variety of Team Fortress?? SOrry to say....Resistance falls short on all of those points.
As we've learned over the years....just because you can stick 64+ people online...doesn't mean you should.
More people can drastically affect the balance of a game......just like too large a map can affect gameplay.
So they may talk about the increase in X size of number of players etc.....if you don't get the gameplay and balance right....WHO CARES?

You do understand that Warhawk, COD4, TF2 and Halo are designed to be online multiplayers (even though they might have single players too), but Resistance merely has a online feats as a bonus (like nearly every FPS has).

Sure it is lacking features what the games you mentioned before have.
It just amuses me that you sound suprised to notice that FPS designed to be multiplayer is better multiplayer than FPS that just has multiplayer.

What are you talking about? "Just because you can stick 64 players in a game doesn't mean you should"? 64-player Battlefield 2 is some of the best gaming ever. I am sure 64 player BF2142 is the same. If you can stick 64 players in a game, make it tight and fun, you DEFINITELY SHOULD! Because it's incredible!

Just a few comments...
1) I don't understand all the hatred towards GodIsAMyth. As a Catholic I find him sorta hilarious and I don't think he's really a bad person. What more likely the case is that he's just deliberately pushing your buttons since most of you regulars here no Joystiq are basically arrogant assholes (especially the SDF). Yeah I know he likes the ps3 but I haven't read anything in this thread that suggest hes evil or saying something out of the blue.
2) 60 people sounds good but I highly doubt it will be that great. I highly doubt there will be that many games that have 60 players in them from START to FINISH going on constantly running day to day.
As a 360 fanboy though I'm not even gonna sweat it. Why? Cuz Gears of War 2 will hopefully be just as good if not better than R:FOM.
Lets just wait and see the final product.
