Soul Calibur IV creator gives details on game, justifies Vader
61
We appreciate Soul Calibur IV director Katsutoshi Sasaki's candor. In a recent CES interview with GameTrailers, the Namco Bandai bigwig explained the bizarre inclusion of Darth Vader and Yoda as playable characters in his upcoming game, simply stating that he's giving gamers what they want. Here at Joystiq HQ, we appreciate nonsensical pandering more than the average bear. How about Jack Bauer as the protagonist of the next Resistance game? Chuck Norris in Street Fighter IV? Or an unlockable Ron Paul in Super Smash Bros. Brawl? (Actually, no news about Brawl would shock us at this point.)

What this gamer wants is a plausible explanation as to how Vader and Yoda ended up in the Soul Caliber universe. So far, all I've seen is Lucas wanted some more dough.

Maybe the Soul Calibur characters are actually in the Star Wars universe!
Or maybe Vader and Yoda come to Earth to do something about Soul Edge 'cause it's evil and stuff. Star Wars and Soul Calibur could be happening at the same time. Many people mistake Star Wars for taking place in the future, when it actually happens a long time ago, just in a galaxy far far away.
Also, it's just a video game about zombie pirates fighting ninjas, samurai, knights, and, the O RLY owl. The game's always been about fan service.

Vader scoffs at your compulsion to make excuses for him.

Yeah, because the rest of the Soul Caliber characters are so real and believable. I'm not bothered – haven't enjoyed any of these since Soulblade.

Wow! You named the first game in the series to show how hardcore you know your shit! Go you!
Seriously, If you prefer Soulblade over Soul Calibur 1, well... You've got issues.

I think we're missing that he's enjoying Las Vegas. Why exactly? Is it because of the incredible fantasy of having the Great Pyramid of Egypt near the Statue of Liberty like some sort of crossover malarkey.

Yes, he can justify Darth Vader, but can he justify Soul Caliber Legends.

Indeed. They could've simply made your standard adventure and/or RPG game like Shadow of the Colossus, Legend of Zelda, or Bioware/Square-Enix RPG and it would've turned out more focused than a cheap hack and slash game with a weak progress system.

It's because the brain-dead marketing teams looked at the success of Kingdom Hearts, and said to themselves "Aha! The key to great success must be to randomly combine elements from Eastern and Western fantasy/sc-fi IPs. We are going to make sooooo mcuh money!!!

OMGZ George Lucas is a whore, and this is a dumb crossover. Why is this such a touchy issue. Dont all the star wars fans and nerds expect this type of shit now? I gave up along time ago on it.

Every time you complain about Vader/Yoda in SC, God kills a kitten and slaps your mom for raising such an idiot child. So if you hate your mom and kittens, then complain away!

Ugghhh....which one to get, PS3 or 360....:(

I don't see what the problem is. They are really tapping into what's fun about playing MUGEN and bring it main stream. I want to see more of this.

I love how he said they "naturally" arrived at having to include Yoda and Vader in the game...what a load of crap.

My suspension of disbelief can go pretty far in a world where a blind and mute gimp, a golem, a man-lizer, and about 40 other people are fighting for an evil sword and none of them have killed each other yet.

Honestly they could have picked so many better characters that would have better suited the game's style. Link was an appropriate addition I thought, Altair would have been interesting. Yoda and Darth Vadar seems like a joke, but I find myself now wanting the PS3 version more than the 360 version because well Vadar is the man.

I like the idea of having different characters. Hell, I was excited enough for SC4, but with Vader and Yoda... pure awesome! I just hope they release the exclusive characters as DLC for each system.
