Gamespot staffer Alex Navarro quits in wake of Gerstmann-gate
Joystiq has confirmed with longtime Gamespot staffer Alex Navarro that he will be resigning his position at the CNET gaming site in response to the controversial firing of editorial director Jeff Gerstmann."I felt like it was just time for me to go," Navarro told Joystiq in an exclusive interview. " Certainly [the decision to leave] had a lot to do with the whole Jeff [Gerstmann] situation. ... I wouldn't have left if this situation hadn't gone down the way it did. ... Sometimes you just realize a place isn't for you anymore, you know?"
Navarro has been a mainstay on the site since early 2003, writing hundreds of reviews and appearing regularly on video podcast The Hotspot. His last day at the site will be Jan. 24.
Navarro refused to discuss his take on CNET's public explanation of the circumstances surrounding Gerstmann's firing, out of respect for those still working at the site. "You probably saw the blog post I put up when things went down, not to mention the heap of other blog posts the edit team and other members of the staff put up," he said. "I think the sentiment was pretty clear." In a Nov. 30 blog post, Navarro compared his situation in the wake of the firing to a game of SimCity where "someone hit the disaster button for me."
Though he's leaving, Navarro said he still respects those Gamespot staffers that are trying to make the best of the situation. "There are a lot of people over there still trying to work hard and get through this, keep the name and the reputation of the site alive," he said." Obviously that's not an easy thing right now, but they're still working their asses off trying to keep the dream alive. ... Part of the reason I felt like I had to go now was that I wasn't necessarily keeping up the same level of passion anymore, and that it wasn't fair to those guys to stick around there if I wasn't on board all the way."
Navarro's departure comes in the wake of a similar decision to move on by longtime Gamespot freelancer Frank Provo. When asked if other staffers might follow their lead, Navarro said he "wouldn't be shocked ... but I can't say I out and out expect it."
In announcing the news to the press, Gamespot Editor-in-Chief Ricardo Torres said Navarro was "a good guy [and] a hard worker. We're gonna miss him."
As for his future plans, Navarro said he's "just going ride it out a bit" for the time being while he considers positions in journalism and game development. "It was a tough decision to let go of something [I've] been so thoroughly attached to for this many years," he said. "It's a crying shame that things went down the way they did, but like I said, I think my time had just come, the time to let it go."

At this rate, Gamespot would become unrecognizable.

wow, the end for Gamespot and Cnet.
how long will they STILL deny it all? Geez,

It's not the end of cnet. It may be the end of gamespot.

I just wish this would have happened to an editor that wasn't a piece of shit...
Though, I can always hope and pray that his shittyness was all along a tool of GameSpot, but that doesn't seem likely.
CharleyTony @ Jan 14th 2008 8:31AM
Jeff and Alex really should consider going together to another gaming site or gaming magazine... or even created a brand new website. You know, a review site that doesn"t BS with their scores, dont sellout, and unlike the recent Gamespot reviews... actually have video reviews !!! LOL
Im with you Alex !
foxDie @ Jan 14th 2008 8:33AM
wow. Navarro was one of the last few names i really like there. I tried watching an "on the spot" recently and it was really bad. Navarro and Jason Okampo were backing up some guy whose been around for awhile but i never found very entertaining.
Now the only one left who i like is Ryan Davis. But hes nothing with Rich and Jeff.
RIP gamespot. I'm now dating your younger hotter sister GameTrailers!

Agreed man. If Rich Gallop, Jeff Gerstman and to a lesser extent Navarro put a gaming website together i would be there...... but how do you start the wheel grinding on something so big like gamespot? It seems like a fairly expensive venture.
That said Gabe and Tycho do pretty freakin well and they dont do videos or anything

Good. Maybe Navarro will now have some credibility to his work.
CharleyTony @ Jan 14th 2008 9:06AM
I dont know either you go the blog way,, making a blog, using youtube to post video reviews, and keep reviewing game as they come out instead of getting advance copies... or they could join an existing up-and-coming video review website ... if these guys are serious about gaming journalism... the blog alternative is the poor mans option but it does have integrity and could become commercially viable if some advertisers see something good about a no BS review site,,, maybe advertisers that dont advertise games ?!?!?! Gamers dont just buy games,,, I think ...
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 14th 2008 11:26AM
Literally the poor man's option, because you don't get paid for doing a blog and video in your spare time.
Kingsgoon @ Jan 14th 2008 9:23AM
That pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for Gamespot.
FLAwyer @ Jan 14th 2008 9:53AM
Good. Another criminal-in-training eliminated. When my group finishes our purchase of CNet, the first thing we will do is fire everyone at Gamespot and eliminate Gamespot from the Cnet network.
Farseer (GDI) @ Jan 14th 2008 10:11AM
I honestly haven't been on Gamespot for months. I removed them from my live bookmarks and RSS feeds during the whole Gerstmann-gate ordeal, and I haven't been back since.

How many memebers of the original staff still work at Gamespot? if this continues soon Gamespot will be like Gamepro.

Gamepro-who?
Obie @ Jan 14th 2008 11:29AM
Jeff has his own blog that he updates regularly.
The old Gamespot gang should join up and do their own thing.
Mr.ESC @ Jan 14th 2008 12:58PM
Like their own site to review games and stuff, that sounds familiar.
t_m @ Jan 14th 2008 11:35AM
google almost any game and gamespot is almost always the top link. That'll keep em going. Once people are at the top, its hard to knock em down as they have all the advantages.
I have to keep catching myself and remembering to click on the 2nd or 3rd link down instead.
Maurice M @ Jan 14th 2008 11:54AM
"On the Spot" is the video podcast. "The Hotspot" is just an audio podcast. I miss them both a lot, but with Jeff gone they're very lacking.
aaron_k7 @ Jan 14th 2008 12:07PM
Alex was the best reviewer on the site IMHO. The picture that is shown here is a vidcap from this lousy monster truck racing game for PC...look it up...sort by reviews ascending; it's hilarious.
aaron_k7 @ Jan 14th 2008 12:09PM
Sorry, I meant sort by review *scores* ascending...it's one of the lowest rated games that has a video review.
WhoMe @ Jan 14th 2008 12:48PM
Hmm you know, listening to the HotSpot this week I got the feeling the rest of the crew were kinda ignoring Alex at one point. Alex was being very loud (as per usual), commenting on the stories or e-mails or whatever, but no one really paused to let him speak or gave him much attention. I only noticed it at that one point though. Maybe they were mad/upset about him leaving or something? Didn't read much into it, until now.
Anyway, GS... sigh. I know it's more people than the faces you see on On The Spot and all, but they are, well "the face" of GS really. Over the last year that has changed dramatically. Kasavin, Gallup, Gerstmann, Navarro... Doesn't look good. Thing is, Gallup is (still?) looking for work, Gerstmann as well, Kasavin is with EA iirc, but I don't think they can do anything by themselves that amounts to what they did at GS.
greks224 @ Jan 14th 2008 1:08PM
At least Gamespot still has forums . . . and some good reviewers. . .
Benjamin Breeg @ Jan 14th 2008 1:32PM
Those new higher-ups from Stuff and Maxim magazine sure do know how to run things well. I mean look, just a few months after joining and the site has almost completely revamped itself. Now nobody trusts the site, nobody wants to give them money, and nobody wants to work there anymore. Thats some classy work they did back in november.
quickshade @ Jan 14th 2008 2:11PM
Trust me they are flipping out. He said he wouldn't be shocked if more people quit. Which tells me that 2-3 other people might leave. Tt's not the end of gamespot, but it is the end of their run being the best site on the web.
jc @ Jan 17th 2008 2:57AM
Ryan and Brad... time to jump ship!
I want to see you guys create your own gaming site.
Nick @ Jan 14th 2008 7:58PM
Hey, Jostiq. The HotSpot is an audio podcast not a video podcastas you mentioned.
I'll miss Mr. Navarro too. I totally respect his wishes to leave. I've been there too, to a degree, as far as feeling like it's time to leave a job kind of feeling.
Ryan P. @ Jan 14th 2008 10:27PM
Have you listened to the Hotspot lately? Without Gerstman it's so lame. They have Ryan Davis trying to be funny every two minutes like Jeff. Ryan Davis is no Jeff Gerstman. And Ricardo Tores is in there also now. He has zero audio or camera presence. Without the Podcast Hotspot is just another review site. BORING!
parasite_evil @ Jan 15th 2008 12:18AM
Good riddence. I Always hated this guy. It sucks he quit instead of getting fired.
