MTV's Stephen Totilo describes himself as a guy "who played Fire Emblem with the battle animations turned off." This is just so we're clear on his impressions of a pre-release build of 360 epic RPG Lost Odyssey. According to Totilo, it's a slow-moving game which suffers from long load-times, but benefits from its "Thousand-Year Dream" sequences, well-written short stories which appear as on-screen text throughout the game.
That's right. Like the recent Harvey Birdman game, you'll definitely need the ability to read to play through Mistwalker's epic tale (gamers read, right?). For Totilo, it's these text sequences that set Lost Odyssey apart from the Final Fantasy series, to which he draws many comparisons.
Ultimately, however, it seems Lost Odyssey will require a lot of patience, with the first non-tutorial fighting sequence not occurring until two hours in to the game. We'll have to see come February 12 whether gamers have the attention span for the four-disc, 50-hour adventure.

I know, I'm gonna get yelled at, but really, READING? Isn't that the #2 complaint about JRPGs after grind? The lack of voice acting and flood of on-screen text.
And these "well written short stories" think of how much more they'd mean to you if they were being spoken by the character telling them, instead of pushing A for the next paragraph.
I'm not decrying the depth this will bring, but the presentation and it's effect on immersion. Is making this a game the right choice? There should be scale somewhere that when your text-to-game ratio gets so high, you just make it a book because you'll get a higher return on investment.
I have a feeling the 360 is about to get it's first Xenogears. While a great game, the second disc of it was reading about the awesome things your characters did instead of actually doing them.

I think it's similar to Mass Effect in terms of when voice is used. All the important stuff is probably in voice. But the extra stuff like the short stories have to be read. In Mass Effect the Codex is extra stuff that's why it's all text.

Ill give you an example: Final Fantasy 7. That is all.

I am tentatively looking forward to this game because I love RPGs (Like many people posting here), and I don't mind having a higher story to gameplay ratio so long as the story remains compelling. Too often I have played halfway through an RPG to suddenly ask, "Why? What is the point?"
Regarding the 2hr tutorial I am not so concerned. Anyone Remember Kingdom Hearts' 3hr tutorial/introduction? That game was awesome despite being so heavily story driven. (Although it had a damn good gameplay system in place too...)

I got this game, the longest loading time in this game was 4 minutes. The total of cut scene in this game was 20 hrs long. Overall this games has way too much cinema instead playing the game.

I remember having to read my way through the beginning of Xenogears' 2nd disc and wondering when the hell I'd be able to start actually playing it again. I understand the development team had to do it that way because of time/budget limitations. But to think that a game would be DESIGNED that way is just sad.

Complex storylines in games are fine, but if the only way of integrating one you can come up with is putting a fucking text box on screen, you should be writing a novel - not designing a game.
