Atlus USA reveals 'Rondo of Swords' for DS

Though Nintendo let the cat out of the bag yesterday with its extensive first-half 2008 release schedule, not much was known about the scampering feline save for its name, "Rondo of Swords." Admittedly not a great name for a cat, but it seems fitting for an "epic strategy fantasy RPG" from the capturers of quirk, Atlus USA. Judging by the trailer (embedded after the break), the Success-developed DS title is rife with saucer-eyed heroes, stylized attacks and touch-screen tactics -- just the way we like it.
The Atlus folks promise multiple storylines, a "unique" combat system and the ability to send some of those annoying party members far, far away on level-raising errands. They also promise never to capture cats in bags again, because it's mean. If you can forgive them, look for Rondo of Swords on April 15, 2008.

All I see is ROSS, it's subliminal advertising.
Jerk Face @ Jan 17th 2008 2:35PM
It seems to have some real old school charm, and also looks to have an interesting combat system for an SRPG. Daddy likes.

Atlus - this game - Amazing?
Play OB64 and check out its battle system =Ø
I was hoping for a real-time weapon change feature... O well
FidliousWong @ Jan 17th 2008 2:40PM
I'm getting tired of only playing strat RPGs on my PS2 and PSP so yeah, this looks most welcome.
dizzy @ Jan 17th 2008 2:46PM
SRPG and DBZ energy blasts emitted from swords? Sounds like fun, I'll pick it up.
shivr @ Jan 17th 2008 2:57PM
fire emblem-ish?
Worst Review Ever @ Jan 17th 2008 3:00PM
Seems Chrono Trigger-ish to me. Style-wise, that is, not so much gameplay wise.
StrangeBum @ Jan 17th 2008 3:15PM
I just wanted to point out that after all the games that this seems to resemble. (Look in the comments, Chrono Trigger/Castlevania/Fire Emblem/and I thought WonderBoy-ish too) that it's obviously drawn inspiration from many great (varies) games.
I'm hoping for something great out of this.
Mr.ESC @ Jan 17th 2008 3:01PM
For a second I thought this had something to do with Castlevania.

Day One purchase for me. I love these kinds of games.
Nice midi music, lol
James @ Jan 17th 2008 4:23PM
Interesting... You know the DS doesn't have a midi chip? It uses a system similar to modules.
Overgauss @ Jan 17th 2008 3:06PM
This is going to be so frikkin awesome.
velocitystrike @ Jan 17th 2008 3:06PM
After having played Hoshigami Remix, this looks a little bland...
Kia @ Jan 17th 2008 3:07PM
Looks like Fire Emblem meets Yggdra Union from that video on the site. Well I'm pretty damn sold.
StrangeBum @ Jan 17th 2008 3:13PM
Looks pretty promising from that small tidbit of gameplay. But I get a sense of WonderBoy in there with the side-scrolling combat. And as for the Stat parts, that movement system based fighting looked pretty interesting.
Definitely will check this out.
InspectorDim @ Jan 17th 2008 3:13PM
Looks good to me! Can't get enough SRPGs on the DS.
Greyseal @ Jan 17th 2008 3:46PM
I'm definitely interested... hopefully we'll keep hearing good things about this one down the line.
Atlus is a name I didn't pay much attention to in the past, but they seem to have found a groove with the DS and Wii. Kudos to them... hope it continues.
FidliousWong @ Jan 17th 2008 5:25PM
Dude, Atlus has been the shit since SNES. Their PSX and PS2 support was amazing and they constantly badly Nippon Ichi as best niche publisher on PSP. If their Wii and DS support, their weakest examples thus far, are the reason you love them... dude, expand your horizon. If for nothing else than to play Summon Knight on GBA
Greyseal @ Jan 17th 2008 6:01PM
Count to ten, dude.
Even after going over a list of old Atlus games, I've never heard of most of them. I'm sure many were excellent, but they're pretty damn obscure. Mind you, I was 15 when those games were out, so my grasp of the niche market was a little limited.
I did stumble across one bit of nostalgia, though... Crusader of Centy for the Genesis. I didn't have an SNES as a kid, and that game helped soothe the lack of Zelda. I'd love to see that pop up on the Virtual Console sometime.
samfish @ Jan 17th 2008 4:03PM
I like Atlus more and more. They consistently publish cool little games.
Mabui @ Jan 17th 2008 5:08PM
Sold

@James
I know, I know. I was just joking. But the music sounds really outdated, like an old school NES game.
That's why i said midi. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's cool.
James B @ Jan 17th 2008 5:44PM
It looks way to much like Fire Emblem for me to take it seriously right now. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.
Overgauss @ Jan 17th 2008 6:22PM
The music kinda reminds me of Panzer Dragoon Saga there in the beginning.
Bluesilo @ Jan 17th 2008 6:47PM
Bought two Atlus USA games over the holidays:
Odin Sphere
Persona 3
Both becoming rare, both becoming uber expensive, both terrific games. Moral of this story, buy Atlus games day 1. Can't wait.
chispito @ Jan 17th 2008 7:20PM
Persona 3 seems to have become rare, as you said. However, Odin Sphere is still available for the launch price of $40 at Amazon.
I know because I have been waiting for a price drop since then.
moominsean @ Jan 17th 2008 7:25PM
yeah defnly sounds like a castlevania game.
Angry at Atlus @ Jan 17th 2008 8:32PM
I can't find Persona 3 anywhere. (Retail or Online) (I live in Lower Manhattan/NYC)
Has anyone seen it in the wild? I can use some help.
ANYONE! PLEASE! (I know i'm a loser, lol)
