The Wii isn't just a good rehab device for patients, it's apparently a good warm-up tool for surgeons as well. A study at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center claims that certain types of games are effective as a precision control prep before surgery.
Surgeons who did an hour of gaming scored nearly 50% higher on tool control and overall performance in a virtual reality simulator. The Wii's Marble Mania was particularly effective due to the controlled movements necessary -- ironically, Trauma Center isn't mentioned at all. The researchers will present at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality conference later in January.

Please don't give me the surgeon that's been playing Manhunt 2.

Doctor 1: Scalpel?
Doctor 2: Scalpel.
Doctor 1: Uh-oh.
Doctor 2: What?
Doctor 1: Nothing...nothing. *tries desperately to sew head back on*

Yeah, I can just see a bunch of surgeons printing this out and bringing it to their Chiefs of Medicine to try and justify getting a Wii for the prep area.

I hope they washed their hands afterwards.

If Trauma Center isn't effectice precision practice, it sure is effective nervous-wreck practice. I'd take a surgeon who can calmly deal with the last mega surgeries in the first DS version.

I borrowed that game from my friend last year and I gotta say, that last surgery was very tough. It took me a couple times to be able to do it and it was so much fun to do. I'm currently in medical school and thinking of surgery and my friends and I like to think that playing video games (in our free time) will help us become better doctors/surgeons because of all the hand eye coordination needed.

About a year ago, I heard a similar study described on the radio in which the surgeons played Super Monkeyball.

With the protein-folding power of the PS3, and the surgery boosting buffs of the Wii, that leaves only the 360 as "Platform in its generation that didn't lead to the 2011 cure of cancer".
Epic fail, MS.

this isn't just limited to wii. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4685909/
i asked some surgeons i work with and they said it helps out a lot to be able to control something complex (controller) while looking at a screen for output instead of their hands. that is how they do laparoscopic surgery. controls in their hands and screen in their face.

I'm confused as to what led up to deciding on such a study.

I guess violence isn't the ONLY thing that video games cause, huh?

I'd shun the surgeon who'd be tracing Healing Touch pentacles on my open body.
I wonder if surgeon tools have wii straps... ;P
