Super Mario Fusion makes Mushroom Kingdom Hearts a reality
36
You may remember last year's April issue of EGM particularly well, as it included the breaking news on a hot new title making its way onto the Nintendo Wii: Mushroom Kingdom Hearts. Then again, you might remember the chorus of angry Nintendo/Disney/Square Enix fanboys screaming when they realized that the announcement was one of EGM's annual April Fools' Day pranks. If you also smacked your head in realization when the initial excitement subsided, we've got great news for you (and this time, it's on the level).
JudgeSpear has lovingly crafted his take on the game-that-never-was, titling it Super Mario Fusion: Mushroom Kingdom Hearts. Much like the legit Square Enix franchise, Fusion features a dimension-hopping Mario, and worlds based off of other video game franchises, including Halo, Sonic, Doom, Castlevania, Ghouls and Ghosts, Mega Man, and a handful of other Nintendo titles. Using familiar controls similar to those of Super Mario World, and a new gunplay mechanic using Covenant weaponry, this programmer has created a Frankengame that is definitely worth checking out.
A demo for the game is available on his site. Sure, it's still a tad buggy, but it's free, and it's probably the only time you'll see Mario packin' heat. We hope.

Download is corrupted or something. ZIP file is fine, but the program inside it complains it's corrupted and crashes.

If I had to spend my day harvesting souls whilst dressed like that, I too would be a bit cross.

I watched the video of the halo level; it was brilliant. This guy should get a medal.

Please stop these unholy alliances. My fandoms have already been tainted with a fat Italian plumber for the second time(the first time was Mario in a Metroid game shown on DSFanboy), and they were both made by fans.
And yes, I don't really like crossovers. Smash Bros is the obvious exception. Just what the hell does Mario have to do with Castlevania, Megaman, Halo, etc? Crossovers don't have to make sense in something like a fighting game, but a platformer? Come ON.

Your logic angers me for some reason. Why would platformers be more obliged to make sense than fighting games? And anyway, he did explain the crossover in the opening text: strange interdimensional rifts causing an interdimensional fusion of different dimensions.

I just don't like Mario, k? And I certainly don't like different mechanics pushed together. It's like saying that Mario's platforming engine is the best, and did the creators of these fangames ever put a Belmont or Mega Man in the Mushroom Kingdom? No. I will never accept Mario in the same universe as Castlevania or the year 20XX.

Ah yes, why make nonsense of sensible platformers where turtles can fly, man-eating flowers grow in pipes, and capturing bouncing stars causes temporary fits of invincibility?

Seriously though, that was fucking magnificent.

Mario seems to have a few advantages over Mega Man. Slamming into those ceiling spikes didn't kill him instantly and he can jump on top of all those bots. I guess Dr. Light was brilliant enough to create some of the most advanced robots the year 20XX had ever seen, but wasn't quite up to task in creating a helmet and a pair of boots that offered at least as much protection as a plumber's cap and shoes.

You do realise that Light only managed to make helmets capable of breaking bricks after the Megaman series, and didn't even have time to properly install it onto Megaman X. Mario's probably a genetically-enhanced being or something in that extent.
(on that note, it's also around the same time which Light also managed to make an upgrade which protects against spikes. Apparently the two technologies are related)
