"Another GOTY award?" you say. Sure, but this one is different. Sort of. Tired of being relegated to the confines of E3 every year, the folks behind that event's Game Critics Awards have tasked themselves with determining not just the games of E3, but the best games of the year! Using a weighted process (not unlike the one used for Joystiq's totally definitive Game of the Year awards), the panel of 36 judges picked their top 10 choices and, using the magic of mathematics, whittled those choices into a list of ten games.
The list is being trickled out all week, starting with today's numbers ten and nine: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Assassin's Creed, for being "one of the most memorable games you can play" and being "one of the most unique gaming experiences of this, or any other year" respectively. Of course, we're all wondering just how closely the winners will match up to their E3 showings and, knowing that a win in one doesn't guarantee a place in the other, wondering if we'll look at future GCA winners differently. Let's see where Rock Band and Mass Effect wind up first, okay?

It should end around November 2008, then we can look forward to the 2008 stuff.
Once all this trickles off, there will be GOTY editions of Bioshock and CoD4 for sure, or something stupid like that...

GOTY is like the bowl championship series. Yeah, maybe there's no clear, definitive winner all the time, but at least a bunch of developers get to stick a couple of GOTY plaques on their games and feel good about themselves, as well as sell a couple of alumni parking spots, err, games.

Joystiq GOTY is the definitive list... only because Portal = #1
Bioshock was good, but Portal was A-Fucking-Mazing

Maybe the awards thing will get streamlined eventually. Like the movies, we'll have one award that matters(Oscars), one award that's real(Cannes) and a bunch of others no one cares about(Ever see an actor's resume listing he won an MTV movie Award?) I'd rather we have many "lesser" awards, though.

I was always under the impression that the AIAS (Academy of Interactive Art & Sciences) gave the "official" game-of-the-year awards. Every game that gets their GOTY gets that gold sticker on their product. Here's the list of overall GOTY from the AIAS from their website (www.interactive.org):
* Bioshock
* Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
* Rock Band
* Super Mario Galaxy
* The Orange Box

“Assassin's Creed, for being one of the most memorable games you can play" and being "one of the most unique gaming experiences of this, or any other year"
Complaining about AC now is pointless, even when I have a lot of complains about AC I’ll try to keep my comment short this time.
The content of AC is too shallow and the gameplay is too repetitive for its own good.
Memorable? Well yes there are some points that are truly brilliant but Portal and Bioshock are even more memorable.
Unique?, well sandbox games aren’t really that unique. The plot is unique yes but again Bioshock plot is also unique and COD4 story is pretty damn good.
The whole assassination thing is great and the only thing why AC can be consider great.

It's worth noting that each of those games averaged less than 2.5 points per judge, where a judge has to assign at least five points per nominated pick. In other words, these were not heavily supported choices.
But with 36 judges, Joystiq can't feel great about not earning a slot on the panel. Hell, even Kotaku got a chair!

"I never played Uncharted tho'"
that's okay. we don't need your opinion on EVERY game and movie joystiq mentions, just all the ones that you have ever played.

I was hoping for a recommendation, like
“oh dude you have to play it is so *****fucking unbelievable ,in one level you shoot ants from your **** and kill the cyber Nazi zombie, is like fucking Gears of war and Indiana Jones together abusing of the ‘roids,”
But okay.
Now if Kotaku gets a chair that just fails.

I won't acknowledge them until they become at least as comprehensive as IGN's "Best of the Year"
That means they have to have 1 award for each main genre, then add in awards for graphics, sound, story, art design, music, online multiplayer, offline multiplayer, innovation
One thing the games industry needs is a comprehensive-yet-official system of awards, if they can get it that comprehensive, it'll fill that gap

If someone would round up all the GOTY awards and make a list of which games won the most, that would be awesome.

I always figured GOTYE were just patch updates and some free swag you can download for free.....ya know its a 2nd revision to the production line,nothing real big unless they toss in expansions and what not.
