All these "studies" detractors bring up , I guess they could be useful to an extent but if you want to really want to get into it there are plenty of "studies" out there which support video games. I'm sick of this "OMG VIOLENCE AND SEX IN VIDEO GAMES, THEY MUST BE BAD" bullshit.

I like how the guy Fox picked to be the opposing side was actually competent, unlike that Jack Thompson debacle. JT had the weaker point, but the other guy was just a sniveling ninny who made gamers look bad.

This is the letter I just sent to Fox News:

I just viewed your Live Desk piece where your host had done a bare minimum of investigation herself by only looking at the website for the game but not actually trying the game herself. She then had as one of her “experts” on the game one Cooper Lawrence, a psychologist who also had never played the game. This supposed piece of journalism announced over and over again that there was full nudity and sex in Mass Effect, despite the FACT that there is not. As the only knowledgeable person on this ridiculous piece of journalism, Geoff Keighley noted that there is only partial nudity, and one mild sexual situation(which is not graphic) which you may not even see in the game depending on how you develop a very realistic romantic relationship in the game. The fact that your host of this segment seems to completely ignore Geoff’s statements, and the fact that he is the only person on the segment who has any actual knowledge of the game as opposed to hearsay, is downright irresponsible and a manipulation of internet rumors for sensationalism and riding an ill-informed anti-videogame bandwagon. I sincerely hope that you will run another segment on Live Desk retracting many of the ridiculous “facts” that were bandied about, and report what is actually happening.



I suggest you have your Live Desk host sit down with Geoff Keighley and actually play the game, and then report on her firsthand experience, instead of taking the word of fishmongers such as Cooper Lawrence who is hoping to ride the tide of controversy to better book sales.

At 13 years old I had seen enough action movies most kids my age could only dream of. I didn't turn out fucked up and with the world today how the hell could anyone not know what sex is? Or let alone War?

The concept of war is pretty much the same as it's been for ages. Sex, is well sex and most kids who don't know about it at 13 should get a quick lesson about the birds and the bees from mom and dad or else you can have a Juno on your hands! Maybe 13 seems like a start.

That's another thing doesn't "mature" state 17 and above right? Well, last I checked to be able to see "R" rated movies you had to be 17..... So it makes me wonder why another rating called adult? In truth I long for more games that are adult rated even though there is no point in such a rating when I thought mature was pretty much the one that covered the area on such games that we play.

What people won't go to great lengths or to make them self known to make a point a pitiful point as a 13 year old boy looking at playboy. Well, last I knew what kid wouldn't have seen it by one of there friends?

Some people just need to grow up and face the music of the real world and understand you can't control everything let alone the fact you at some point young or old has known a lot of things they are trying to pawn off as bad on to someone else or saying it's bad.

To me if people are going to attack video games why not rap music? I remember a time when rap music was actually good with no name calling and such... of course that time has come and gone very quickly before it was changed into what people call rap nowadays.

I know I'm beating a dead horse at this point, but it's sad when news channels (not just fox) fill dead air time with stories that A:Noone has researched and B:Noone is on the "pro" side of (except Geoff, but they cut him off pretty early on).

When a news channel is having a discussion about something, it's now reasonable to assume that NOONE has even spent 10 minutes with the subject they are talking about, and it's incredibly sad.

If they had so much as watched the sex scene, they would have laughed at it. A brief glimpse of alien side boob and naked butt? Watching re-runs of old NYPD blue episodes yesterday, I saw the full bare ass of one of the girls from the show. This episode is circa 1990 something, and noone ever pitched a fit about it.

I recently caught your program in which Ms. Cooper Lawrence and Geoff Keighley are interviewed over the controversial aspects of the video game Mass Effect. I had already heard of the controversy over this game prior to your show, and was under the impression they were already dismissed. After watching your interview I decided to do some research myself and found that the sex in Mass Effect is less graphic than something you'd see in a PG-13 movie. And, as Keighley said, is optional and only lasts 2 minutes in a 30 hour game. I feel that Fox News should have done the research (which I was able to look up in less than ten minutes online) before doing a story on what, while possibly not purposely misleading, ended up being incorrect in all respects. Next time I would hope you would contact the ESRB, the video game equivalent of film's MPAA rating board, to find out exactly what warranted Mass Effect receiving a Mature (17+) rating.

Funny, towards the end of her rant the blonde speaks of how damaging video games and movies can be to children. I submit that reports like these, and reporters like her, are far more damaging to today's youth than any video game could ever be. What about the other rights given to us by the first amendment? Not just yours (freedom of press) are important. Oh, and her pointing out the sexually suggestive themes in Mass Effect just make me want to go out and purchase the game. Just a few weeks ago (like 2 tops) FOX News was talking about game violence to an extent (some game where you have to blow up the planes about to hit the twin towers or something) and ranted about how terrible it was - and then followed be saying something along the lines of "not all games are bad...just look at America's Army, it is used to recruit people into the military."

The sad part is if Mass Effect was a movie, It'd probably be PG-13, because the word "fuck" is not present(See: Transformers), it has little in the way of gore(See: Spider-Man) and some brief nudity(See: Milla Jovovich's career).

Hello Ms. Lawrence,
I was recently watching fox news simply looking to see what was going on in the world when a segment about a video game, "Mass Effect', came on in which you were invited to discuss the affect of sex in video games on young children. Firstly you state a completely incorrect statistic, that the average video gamer is an adolescent male, while the gamer market is about 60% male the average gamer is far closer to 40 years old and has been playing video games for over 12 years, not anything like the young inexperienced and impressionable youth which you portray. Those statistics can be found here: http://www.theesa.com/facts/gamer_data.php on the ESA website, entertainment software association. Next you portray the game to be some sort of alternate world where at any time a user may simply select a female and begin coitus. This is simply false and couldnt be further from the truth. There is one scene in which if you choose a particular story line that there is a very short scene of some graphic sexual acts, however this is far from the "playboy" type erotic imagery you must have imagined. As you have never even played the game I wonder how you could possibly know so assuredly what happens. You mention a study, I assume the one mentioned here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1421-2005Feb5.html from the university of maryland. You state that this study shows that people who play video games cant tell the difference between what is in a video game and what is real. The study however never compares video games to reality, the researchers simply showed the subjects pictures of video game violence and asked them if they found that to be harmful. I dont know about you, but I'm not any less scared of being shot by a criminal in the streets just because I saw it happen in a movie. The whole idea you bring up in the interview is simply based on incorrect facts which you must have simply made-up on the spot. I hope that in the future you will refrain from spitting your venomous hate on subjects you know so little about and on whose statistics you have no idea. You are a charlatan Ms. Lawrence and I ask you to refrain from lying about a form of art which is widely respected.

I'm not sure what the outrage is about. Our side - the anti-regulation, pro-personal responsibility argument - was well represented both in the debate and on the panel, and the hostess complimented the game and tried to give both guests a fair hearing.

It's pretty pathetic if all you can complain about is that FNC used an obvious pun to title the segment.

I don't think anyone's upset by lack of representation for the parental responsibility argument, what everyone's upset about is the mis-characterization of video games generally and the presumptions and ignorance about the game in particular... Combined with the hypocrisy of having double standards with games vs. television and films. Not to mention the fact that the two ladies ganged up against the pro-games advocate and kept interrupting him and making him look stupid.
