Rumor: Super Smash Bros. arriving on VC with Brawl
We, much like our friends at Nintendo Wii Fanboy, don't have a lot of substantiation for this rumor, but we thought we'd pass it along anyway: Nintendo Power has been speculating that Super Smash Bros. will arrive on the Wii's Virtual Console alongside Super Smash Bros. Brawl's March 9 release date. Similar timing was used for Metroid and Super Mario Bros. 3 with Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy respectively.
We understand those tie-ins, each of the new games are markedly different from their predecessors, but we have a hard time believing we'll be enjoying Brawl in March and wish that we could play a shittier version. But hey, maybe that's just us.

i dont see why people would want to play the original on the same day the brand new one comes out, but who knows. The best option would have been to release the original on December 3rd or whatever day it was that brawl was supposed to come out originally.
billychaos @ Jan 21st 2008 12:16PM
I totally agree with you.
Gerwurztraminer @ Jan 21st 2008 1:52PM
I agree to the extent that it feels like that has been the only thing I say in my comments anymore.
DCBlack @ Jan 21st 2008 2:56PM
Releasing it on VC the same day as Brawl would be dumb, but to do it on Feb 10th or even a week or two leading up to Brawl would be excellent.
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Jan 21st 2008 4:55PM
yeah i know i wouldnt want to play the original on the same day i get the new one but i would certainly play it for a week leading up to the new one. hell i still play Melee all the time with my friends, so i would love to play this one again (i never had an N64 so i only got to play this one at my cousins house a few times).
SoulBlade @ Jan 21st 2008 12:14PM
they should give it to buyers for free since they had to bear the news about delays and such...
wishful thinking.. i know
Sky Shark X2 @ Jan 21st 2008 2:28PM
Oh boohoo so there were delays, deal with it, many games have to go through it and there are a lot of worse things that could have happened, like the game being rushed and shoddy, or cancled. I mean so it got delayed by 4 months, the PS3 got delayed for half a year and no one said they should get something free for that. What about the GTAIV players should they get something free too?
Face it delays happen and get used to it because its better to have a delay than a cruddy game. The developers are not forced to abide by the first release date, the new Nights game and GTA 4 are examples of that.

I never owned this game, but is that seriously the cover art? It looks like it was drawn in a second grade classroom with Sharpies and colored pencils. How is that up to Nintendo's standards after classic covers like Mario 64 or even the NES Marios?
TheCassidy @ Jan 21st 2008 1:41PM

Markez @ Jan 21st 2008 12:19PM
Likely releasing this for those poor SOBs who can't afford a brand spanking new copy of Brawl when it comes out, and just need to lick their chops and get a taste of the goodness.
Which I'm assuming would be agonizing to only have the N64 version to go off of :P
comtar @ Jan 21st 2008 12:26PM
The smarter idea is to release it a week or two before Brawl, to get people "in the mood" and "tease" us. They did that with Metroid Prime 3 by releasing them about a week or two before... so should they here.
mr mobius @ Jan 21st 2008 12:41PM
I'd assume that is what they'll do. Nintendo knows more about marketing than to throw away the chance to let people spend money and get the game before they get Brawl.
Croove55 @ Jan 21st 2008 12:57PM
to get people "in the mood" and "tease" us
Are.... are we still talking about video games? Ninty, I love you as a friend, and I don't want to put that relationship in jeopardy.
JodyAnthony (death by snoo-snoo) @ Jan 21st 2008 12:26PM
the thing i'd like to know is why melee is still $30. It has surely sold enough copies to become a players choice title.
Matt_M @ Jan 21st 2008 12:31PM
Supply and demand, amigo. As long as people still buy it at the $30 price point, then Nintendo's not going to change it.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 21st 2008 12:30PM
Same with Mario Kart DD... it still $30, but both games are very good.
Mario Kart DD is the most played game on my Gamecube, and no one can beat me. =)
baby sea tuna @ Jan 21st 2008 12:47PM
It's all about the sparks.
samfish @ Jan 21st 2008 3:40PM
I WISH Melle would have gone down. My copy of Melee has a nice big gash on it, so it crashes every time I try to play through single player mode. Because of this, I've never really beaten SSBM's single player mode with more than a few characters.
Ranko @ Jan 21st 2008 12:31PM

OBJECTION! The witness' testimony contradicts this evidence!

LOL, case dismissed. :)
Mr.ESC @ Jan 21st 2008 12:46PM
Hold It!
That's a game developed by Capcom and publish by Nintendo.
Also Megaman covers in the 80's and early 90´s were usually fugly.
ZenGaijin @ Jan 21st 2008 12:57PM
Take that!
Evidence withdrawn.
comtar @ Jan 21st 2008 3:12PM
I'm sorry Mr. Wright, the evidence you present does not contradict the testimony given by user name Upz. You are going to have to get a penalty.
Perhaps next time you should try using a Nintendo, and more specifically a horrid Mario game cover to help assist in your argument.
Kirby4030 @ Jan 25th 2008 2:55PM
that is the fugliest cover art I have ever seen.
AND MEGA MAN DIDN'T HAVE A GUN! his hand transformed into one...

My wallet my precious wallet!!!
Oh, what a world, what a world.
MichaelQ @ Jan 21st 2008 1:05PM
This would be pretty cool if it had some wii-specific upgrades a la Pokemon Snap such as wi-fi multiplayer, but I doubt that would happen.
Benjamin Gilbert @ Jan 22nd 2008 2:06AM
Videogame journalists don't like Smash Bros. (not just Joystiq writers) and I don't understand why. Repeatedly I have heard them express their lack of clarity as to why these games are so popular (other than the fanboy service.) I've gotten into this with Jeff Gerstmann among others and this seems to be a recurring theme. What the f?! This makes me want to mock your smocks. All of them.
Geist @ Jan 22nd 2008 6:42PM
I tried playing the original SSB a little over a year ago. Damn. Not as fun as it once was, it's like the slower, uglier cousin of SSBM.
Kangstarr @ Jan 21st 2008 1:15PM
That's the fugliest Nintendo box art since Mario and Zelda graced the cover on those Philips cd-i games
Anni @ Jan 21st 2008 1:27PM
I just love the idea that somewhere along the way, Kojima played this game and said, "Dude, how sweet would it be if Snake was in this motherfucker?"
upz @ Jan 21st 2008 1:55PM
Just like when George Lucas played Soul Calibur and said, "Dude, how sweet would it be if Yoda was in this motherfucker?"
Anni @ Jan 21st 2008 1:58PM
Well, in the area of being sweet, at least one of them was right.
Jay @ Jan 21st 2008 1:30PM
what I'm hoping for is some kind of tie-in.
Like Melee had the special trophies for having a save file for certain games like Pikmin. Brawl could do that as well, but also add super special bonuses for loading up a gamecube memory card with a melee file and/or downloading SSB64

Something's gone wrong in the happy-go-land of Nintendo.
That right there should describe SSE.
Mr.ESC @ Jan 21st 2008 2:32PM
"Get N or get out", The original said "Nintendo or GTFO".
Amazing catch phrase by the way.
But I disagree:
That is not the greatest commercial in the world, that is just a tribute, I couldn't remember the greatest commercial in the world..oh wait I just did.
