We don't know about this one, gang. In fact, we're posting this video that supposedly compares the XBLA version of Goldeneye with its N64 counterpart both so you can enjoy it and also so you can go all Zapruder film on it and let us know your opinions on the validity. Right now we're leaning towards shrugging our shoulders and grunting quizzically.
From what we've heard most recently, this is probably a moot point, with the XBLA version currently in limbo. But if this version is real (and assuming they were planning on fixing the sound glitches) we're now even sadder that we won't be getting our hands on it.
Why would you want that, though. Think of it this way. If goldeneye were released today, it would be absolutely horrible compared to all other fps right now. It would get a 1 average from reviewers. This means, today, you wouldn't play it for the quality of gameplay, you would be only playing it for nostalgia. I personally think thats a dumb reason to play a game, especially one like this which doesn't age well.
This was found out the very first day the video came out, someone also pointed out that the "B" (or the red button on the right side) is showing, and there was nothing in the N64 version of the game.
Nah, it's not using Project64, or any other emulator. As someone pointed out, you can see the red B button icon appear on the mission screen on the "360" version. Also, you can see the frames per second on screen, and Project64 doesn't do that (it displays it in the status bar or as big white text overlay)
I agree 100% - this isn't project64... however, don't rule out a a fan created port for the PC using an Xbox360 controller. For the record, I WANT this to be real, but there's no way to tell for certain from the video.
Regardless of whether this particular vid is real or not, MS and Ninty need to settle up so we can get a rerelease of this great game.
one other thing - don't rule out video trickery either. This could be edited footage of the original created to get the fans all riled up. If that's the case.... well I hope it works - I want this game on XBLA very badly. A VC release would be ok... but it would lack online multiplayer.
I hope it uses both analog sticks that would be great.
Over Nine Thousand points of coolness to whoever did this video. The Dead Rising music was a nice touch,Dead Rising is still my favorite Xbox 360 game of all times.
The lack of dual analogs was the only reason I stopped playing Perfect Dark on the harder difficulties. Dual analogs would make PD and Goldeneye amazing.
Actually I figured out how to set up Project 64 to use one 360 controller for the 2.4 setup in Perfect Dark which basically makes the game play like Halo (left stick: move; right stick: look). It was actually a lot of fun, but a little too easy.
All you have to do is make the 360 controller the input for both controllers 1 and 2 in the game. Unfortunately Perfect Dark doesn't allow for 2.1 - 2.4 controls to be used in multiplayer, which was a big disappointment.
Face map features >:( or was that Perfect Dark? Either way, if this ever comes back later after an agreement is reached, they should totally put it in.
Emulator. Easy enough to put a red B in the menu screen with ANY video editor. Cut to emulator. The 60fps in the corner is the giveaway. Totally emulator.
you really can't be certain - debug builds of games often include a fps monitor. I said it above, and I'll say it here - there's no way to tell for certain from this footage whether it's an XBLA build, a fan made PC remake using a 360 controller, or simply video trickery.
Actually, I haven't seen a single GCN game match up to the graphics of God of War 2. GCN simply wasn't pushed to its limits. If it was, then yes, GCN could have had something that looked better than GoW2, but it doesnt.
"Those were awesome graphics at the time. Like FR said, GC graphics are better than PS2."
well it's not "at the time" anymore and graphic have been upgraded a heap since last gen. we all know that both Gamecube and Xbox had better graphics than PS2 but those are all last gen consoles. all of the current gen consoles have better graphics than all of the last gen consoles. i dont know, i guess i expected more of a graphics boost since it's on the 360 which produces some great graphics. it doesnt really matter to me either way though since i wouldnt be playing it even if it was coming out (check the avatar lol). i just like to keep up on the gaming world is all lol.
I'm pretty sure that's just an emulated game using higher res textures. I believe it's Project 64 (correct me if I'm wrong) which has a video plugin that can fetch high resolution textures to replace the game's original ones.
Because the graphics look deceivingly bad for something that is supposed to be running natively with improved assets. I also doubt Microsoft would let Rare get away with not increasing the polycount on those models.
I call fake... it looks like an emulator running the game, the only better thing seems to be better is the resolution. Either emu, or they went really el cheap-o on this version. As far as the B button... noticed it too, could be added in (if indeed its a fake). I know nothing of video post-production and even i could do that.
Don't believe this video! It's a fake! I've seen XBLA material and this just doesn't live up to it. What this guy did was play Goldeneye on a N64 emulator using a graphics plugin that allows you to inject new textures into N64 ROMs. Look it up sometime. He most likely downloaded or created a high-resolution texture package for Goldeneye and used it to make this fake video.
I promise you, this is not authentic material. XBLA material would have better models, better texture mapping than this. Even if it was a development version, it would definitely have looked better. There's no way they'd call that high-def quality.
If this was on the 360, it would no doubt have dual-stick controls. The video still looks stiff in the strafing and looking controls, much like it was on the N64.
I dunno, though. You'd think this video would have been yanked posthaste if it were real.
Theres a Goldeneye mod for HL2 on steam. Its multi[layer only and pretty faithful with the levels (some liberties taken). That satisfies my nostalgia thirst for goldeneye. Though i would love yo give the single player another run-through.
I was ridiculously excited for Goldeneye Source... until I realized it was only for multiplayer and they weren't redoing the whole game. What's the point? They could have just released gun packs and some maps. Then at least I'd still be able to jump.

Wow gratz to Vakir. I didn't know this would reach joystiq. We all laughed on vent when it got featured.

@ rv
It's one of the big contributors in the way FPS games are today. It's significant and kids who never got the chance to play it should get that chance.
That's why you would want to play it.
If you gave it to a kid who had never played an FPS before he would love it.

You can use two analog sticks (plug in two controllers; note that the look y-axis can't be changed from inverted).
rockintom @ Jan 22nd 2008 3:35PM
You could use the analog/c-button route. I always played with those controls, and was pretty much unstoppable to anyone using the standard setup.
