Today's handful video: Mario, gesture mash-up
In what looks like a mash-up tech demo, Super Mario Bros. gets a helping hand from a player, with the plumber being guided and lifted by simple gestures. The video makes us hopeful for fun camera-based games to finally take hold. Bring on the crazy, creative games.See the video after the break.

Couldn't he place his hand under Mario and just lift him across the map?

It looks like one of those games you'd play with the EyeToy.

Thank you, yesterday on Kotaku.

Just kidding, this video's cool enough to see twice.

The clouds are bushes...

The clouds in the original SMB1 have always used the same graphics as the bushes. You never noticed that until now?
Kamizar @ Jan 23rd 2008 4:39AM
Of course not, but there are many people who haven't, and i am merely enlightening them...

In concept it's cool, in action not as cool. I'd definitely play games, that aren't lame and simple, (a lot of the eyetoy games) which are designed for the controls.

I love Dark Crystal.
That's Master Hand?

While this is neat, I think camera-based games aren't popular because people like precision control, which camera-based games cannot yet properly duplicate. Even a game like Super Mario. Bros. requires precision control of the character. Some of the jumps, for instance, need to be well-timed - otherwise you plummet to your doom. So yeah, while novel, camera-based games are somewhat impractical.

Is it just me, or is this the creepiest video I've ever seen?
Joshua @ Jan 23rd 2008 4:05PM
Yes, the music is frightening, so I'm going to stop watching it now.

100 Marios standing strong against the invasion of the Goomba Empire.
THIS IS MUSHROOM KINGDOM!
(I would have seen this interface work better with Super Smash, if you see what I mean. ;) )
