The PS3 pricing structure is like a really wily monkey. You may think you have him, you've got your stun club and net all ready and then ... poof! He loses you, leaving behind only a monkey-shaped cloud of dust. In what appears to be its latest juke, the 80 GB version of the PS3 will apparently go closeout (read: no new shipments) at Best Buy stores, according to an internal memo sent to PS3 Fanboy.
What does this mean for the PS3 exactly? We've checked with our team of experts and are now able to report that we have absolutely no clue. It's worth noting that in Japan, the 20 and 60 GB SKUs of the system were dropped to focus all efforts on the 40GB model, but we don't know if that's what's happening here. The only facts now seem to be that something is up, and Sony's saying it's business as usual. We'll let you know when we hear more.

@All
Honestly, I still say that Sony is up to something big that people are not getting yet. I think I have narrowed it down to a couple of options....
1) They are getting ready for a firmware update with software Backwards Compatibility. I know I maybe a nutball guy who hasn't a clue but I think they are really getting ready to do that. I think they had this plan from day one but "the war" made them hurry their plans once again, way before they were ready with it.
2)Or they are just setting it up to drop PS3 to $299 and drop the PS2 to $99. Don't forget that they were talking about doing this for awhile now. They maybe even have a device in works that would connect the two together to form a super unit. This also maybe a very big stretch but it has happen in the past, Sega CD, 32x and other such ilk...
I am just saying...

They could be coming out with a 100GB model. And as for MS with all their Sku's, most of their Sku's are still active, meaning they are still pushing multiple hardware revisions out at the same time, ie not cutting their costs.
Also they could be pushing a new revision of the ps3 out all together, since they have gotten manufacturing cost down to ~$400.
As for BC, I really hope they make it a simple download or cheap purchase off of PSN since I have an 80GB player and the software emulator runs all the games I play fine. $19.99 seems fair. Thoughts on that?

Sony give me a white 40gb PS3 with a DS3 for $299 and you have a sale. I promise I won't complain about losing USB ports, or a card reader, or even , backwards compatibility. I just want a Blu-Ray player and the ability to play MGS4. Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat. Give me a good console, with decent HDD space, and a solid price point, and you've got a sale.
$399 for a 40GB PS3 with no pack-in games is still too much, when you consider that the console is still 90% potential for the future.

My thing is this. If sony keeps removing things away from the PS3 such things they already done, less USB ports, Memory card reader, hardware base ps2 to software base ps2. Eventually what will happend two years from now if a 60gb orginal ps3 takes a dump and they send it to sony. Will that same guy get a less feature ps3 because sony doesn't make the more feature ps3? I know I would be pissed of. On the xbox side although it has different SKU's the hardware is the same, only difference is that the older hardware was 90nm cpu and no HDMI to 65nm cpu and hdmi now.

I really doubt a price drop is happening on Jan 28th. 1 simple reason. HOLIDAY RETURN POLICYS AND PRICE GUARANTEE THAT MAJOR RETAILERS OFFER EXPIRES JAN 31ST.

First the facts, the internal memo was an internal blog. Momos are sent by mail. If you looked at the memo you would see it was an employee blog. Second fact is that Sony is simply doing away with the Motor Storm pack. The 80 GB will be back in stock soon.

Well, I have read all of your comments and now I am really confused. I have just procured my long awaited PS3 80 gig (bought at a best buy in Masachusettes) with Motorstorm. I am a hardcore gamer with an extensive PS2 library. I bought an 80 gig for 2 reasons. 1st- BC. I couldn't see spending the money on a console that I couldn't play ps2 games (although I would have bought PS3 even if BC wasn't available on any consoles) 2nd- I didn't want to wait anymore. (all my friends were playing COD4 and I felt I was missing out on all the fun.) And despite all the comments, I set my new console up, plugged everything in and turned it on and (amazingly) started playing both PS2 abd PS3 games. Now I have a PS1 PS2 PS3 and a Blue Ray Disc Player. Amazing. Someone happy with a Sony. Hmmmm.

People really need to be careful what they are looking at. The picture above is waht we a Best Buy call the watercooler. It is an employee blog. Some nubee went into the inventory system to check on when the ps3 would be in stock and saw a delete date. He then went on the blog to spread his assumption. He then emailed a snapshot of a screen shot and sent this to PS3fanboy. Notice the ratings button on the screen. Major corparations send memos through fax and now more then ever through email. This is a blog for nubes.
After simple research it was discovered that a new 80gb sku was coming without the motor storm game. This is the exact same thing that happened with the 360 except when the 360 did it we did not have a bunch of seasonal employees. Please pass this on. Thanks
