All I'm saying is, my Odin Sphere (on a 20GB) is prettier than your Odin Sphere (on a PS2), which given how awesome the game looks is definitely saying something.

I remember reading one of the Sony Exec's saying that all of their lineup would not support backwards compatibility. So it was assumed that when he said it that they meant to discontinue all the other SKU's

I work at best buy in gaming and this is way off. They are getting rid of the 40gigs, I just got an at risk report and the 40 gigs are on there. At risk pretty much mean sell these cuz they are not going to make them anymore and we are going to lose money on them. Being that sony just cut the cost of making an 80 gig from $800 to $400 I think your gonna see the 80gig for awhile.

BC is still nice as it allows me to play my PS2 games on a High Def tv with decent upscaling. Before asking people to shut up about BC and saying get a PS2...have you actually tried playing PS2 games on a PS2 versus emulated? The upscaling makes a huge difference and the games look much better for it.

To Liam, I also work at Best Buy, and it looks like someone doesn't read the employee newsletter. The 40 gigs are at risk, yes. Rumors around work say because spiderman 3 is being removed. But right in the new toolkit news is the news update about the 80 gig going closeout. I hope you don't work in the gaming dept.

Well - something is happening as Best Buy does not have the 80GB version on their website anymore. Makes me mad as I really wanted BC. BC did not stop people from buying PS2 and games - the problem with Sony is they never took the consoles to the full extent of their capabilities. They should quit trying to compete with 360 and focus on what they have.

I am a Best Buy employee, and this is the real real. The problem is that Sony is looking to take advantage of all of it's early adopters. You paid the price for your POS and now everyone else is stuck with what they decide to sell....... until the next Holiday season anyways. Then they will offer systems in the format you want, for at least 2 months. This is why Blu-ray is winning, cuz people are stupid and trust Sony, Please dont be the victim of Sony and start thinking for yourself.... go with Microsoft or Nintendo......... Sony is taking advantage of you!

@All

Honestly, I really believe that Sony is got something up their sleeves. I still say that Sony is up to something big that people are not getting yet. I narrow it down to couple of options....

1) They are getting ready for a software firmware with Backwards Compatibility. I know I maybe a nutball guy who hasn't a clue but I think they are getting ready to do that.

2)Or they are just setting it up to go PS3 $299 and drop the PS2 to $99...Maybe even a device that would that will connect the two together to form a super unit. This maybe a stretch but it has happen in the past, Sega CD, 32x and other ilk...

OMFG!!!!! All this SPECULATION!!! The memo says that bestbuy will discontinue the 80GB PS3 (sell threw the remaining supply of PS3 80GB) THAT'S IT!!!!! Nothing else. Stop SPECULATING on what Sony is doing or planning because you Have No Clue!! You are not employed by Sony's Gaming Division (SCEA). You are not CEO/CFO/ P or VP. You have not been in any sales meetings or read any Sony Strategic Sales Reports and etc. You Have No Clue!!! Please people stop speculating and confusing one another of what YOU fear or what YOU think is going to happen. Chillax. You are crying over spilt milk, that frankly, hasn't been spilled yet, nor do we know if its going to. And for those, speaking as if their word is bond and think they know eeeeeverything.....SHUTUP!!!! For all those with opinions....well they're your opinions, your entitled. But relay it as such. An opinion is not necessarily fact.

and for some of you Bestbuy heads, that run off at the mouth before checking everything, it's you that give BBY a bad name to consumers......"I work at BestBuy and I....".Aaaaaah SHUT-THE-HELL-UP!!! Probably the same one askin dumb-ass questions to "the Bus" lol, you kill me.

For you other guys who are "in the know", sane and use your brains, i apologize for the rant. I now return you to your regularly scheduled bloggin'.

Best Buy.com has already pulled the 80GB version. The PS3 hardware page only lists the 40 GB.

As a home theater enthusiast I'm a little disappointed that an infrared port has not been made standard. Before the PS3 was released Sony touted it as a home theater centerpiece. BS if it can't work with your universal remote out of the box! I'm also holding out for wireless N.

As to all these rumors. The Dual Shock seems like the most likely reason.

"Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey who told us, 'Sony is likely dumping the 80GB version because it has failed to meet internal sales projections.' "

By that logic, shouldn't they just dump the PS3 altogether? :P

"The 360 has 10% Backwards Compatibility and is doing well."

The 360 is compatible with just over 50% of Xbox titles through software emulation if you have a hard drive.

To be honest, backwards compatibility is not of main interest to me. Sure when the console is first introduced, there may be games from a prior generation console you may want to play, but once the new games appear for the current console, backward compatibility means less and less.

However, the odd thing here, Nintendo *IS* making money on selling older games via the virtual console. So people are re-buying or discovering old games. So it that respect it would be cheaper to play the version you already assuming you already own it, rather than buy again. Same with Xbox Originals. You can download and play older games at a premium. I suspect Sony is traveling down the same path in respect to older Playstation titles.

This not an internal memo. This is an employee blog. Would a memo having a ratings button? Please pay no attention to this. The 80 gb is still being sold. They are just removing the free game.

ai have the Official news update on the PS3 so called rumor. THe the PS3 is being taken off the shelves at Bestbuy since the SKU has been deleted from their system. This does not mean Sony is discountuing the 80bg PS3. Sony wasn't expecting so many of the upper model to sell so well that many high traffic flow locations never had any 80gb models to offer. Sony has a new marketing idea since Playstation fans aren't willingly to rehire their PS2 due to the high cost of the latest PS3.

Finally Sony has gotten the idea like microsoft to not bundle everthing, and give a lower cost unit. First 80gb units won't be on the shelves for at least a month (until tax return season) which Sony will launch their 80gb units without Motorsport game. The 80gb unit i was told by internal source of Bestbuy would be released for $429.99, a very appealling price. They could not verify if these newer models would carry the new heavier dual shock 3 wireless controller. However, sony did promise the USA that the consumers would start to see these controllers in 2008.

LLate spring, expect to see the 40gb units dispear when the 80gb models are in fact stocked on the shelves again. The new sku for the 40gb model may drop the price in a big way since it won't include the $34.99 spiderman blueray movie. just image PS3 for $349.99 for anyone without ever owning a ps2 getting an excellent deal to switch to SONY!!

Guys this rumour isnt true. Sony hasnt said anything
about taking away the 80gb ps3. and they havent
even started making the next gb model of it. They
are taking out the bundle (motorstorm) and putting
another movie or game with the 80gb ps3. So dont
believe this rumour. ITS NOT TRUE

I spoke with a Best Buy employee at length about the pull of the 80GB PS3. He says they are talking about a slimmer PS3 with a 120GB HDD. He said if this is to be true, Best Buy is to get them in the fall. It's funny; I get my tax return so I can buy an 80GB . . . . . . and they no longer carry them-- anywhere. That's okay . . . if they are making a white one too, that's awesome. I've always wanted a white one. And if it is slimmer, has Blu-Ray 2.0, contains a 120GB HDD drive . . . I can wait until the fall for that. We'll see what finally comes out. Thanks!

I hate SONY!!!!!!!!! I bought a PS3 80 gig in Nov. and it crashed in Feb. I had a Replacement warranty through Best Buy and now they don't have 80 gig's anymore so they are sending me a Gift Card instead of giving me my money back.Best Buy and Sony sucks for doing this to their loyal customers. I've had a PS1, PS2, and now a PS3 the only reason I won't go to XBox is because I have too many games to transition over to it. I will never buy anything fromBest Buy again!!!!!!!!!!

I'm confused.... I never got a PS3, but now am looking for one since I pre-ordered GTA IV. Now I don't know what to do, the 60GB costs $700.00! I don't want the 40GB since the bad comments about it. My wal-mart only sells the 40GB. Ahhhh! Please someone point me into some direction, I would like to have a good functional PS3 before April 29th :(

I was just at my local Best Buy this evening. The guy there told me that in June 2008 they were supposed to be getting a new 80 GB PS3 with a different bundled game (he said what it was, but I don't remember) and that it would be PS2 compatible and $499.
