First screen of possible Team ICO project: the chain
Sony has replaced muddled sketches with what appears to be an actual screenshot of the next Team ICO project. The image accompanies several job postings (for planners, animators, artists, etc.) and has been affectionately dubbed "ICO 3" by Team ICO Gamers, referring to Team ICO's mysterious third game, which may be a sequel to Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, or maybe both.
While the chain presently does little more than excite our continued curiosity, the appearance of the screenshot gives credence to hopes for a surprise visit from Team ICO at GDC next month. At the end of 2007, ICO lead designer Fumito Ueda teased, "We're looking forward to the day we can reveal our current title(s) in production. Hopefully it will be very soon."

Man, that Team Ico can make a game about just about anything!
flameofdoom666 @ Jan 24th 2008 2:51PM
Lmao, its so true!
peteH @ Jan 24th 2008 3:24PM
What they should do -- like yesterday -- is bring Ico and Shadow of the Colussus to the Wii.
Honestly, it is **the** best system to port old PS2 titles too that didn't get enough play.
ComicShaman @ Jan 24th 2008 3:45PM
Sure they will. Right about the same time you see Metroid ported to the X360 and PS3. Because it would be soooo much better on those systems, right?
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are 1st-party titles from Sony. They aren't going anywhere.
Spirit-of @ Jan 24th 2008 4:50PM
Because if Ico and SotC don't get played on a system with a 40 million-ish user base, surely it will catch fire on a platform that has 10 million-ish!
Hilarious!
ronald.raygun @ Jan 24th 2008 2:38PM
i call this game, "what will make me buy a ps3"
GenoBoost @ Jan 25th 2008 3:26AM
Glad to see I'm not the only one calling it that.
Juice @ Jan 25th 2008 12:48PM
Me2. As long as it's Shadow 2.
ComicShaman @ Jan 24th 2008 2:40PM
No, the screenshot is not very informative, but the fact that these guys are working on another game is cause enough for delight. Both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were brilliant and unique, and I would play either one of them again in a heartbeat.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 24th 2008 7:44PM
The screenshot shows us the insane level of texturing they're aiming for.
Velvetelevator @ Jan 24th 2008 11:30PM
It looks like that is one huge motherfucking chain. Look at the size of the plants and the tiny rocks are in patterns. I want to see what hoooje colossus monstar is pulling that chain, and crawl up the fur of his back and kill him in his hed with my stabbaring sward.
Zootittles @ Jan 24th 2008 2:41PM
DING DING DING!
My first "MUST HAVE" PS3 game finally comes to light.
More or less.
Ranus Studios @ Jan 24th 2008 2:46PM
While I doubt the new game will be Shadow of the Colossus related, I still get giggly imagining SotC as a PS3 game. 'Cause that'd be SEXY.
Nter @ Jan 24th 2008 3:01PM
Hell yes.
zelderman @ Jan 24th 2008 7:54PM
as much as it pains me to say this, but I agree
MD @ Jan 24th 2008 2:47PM
A picture of a chain has never turned me on so badly.
LeMuRfArT @ Jan 24th 2008 2:54PM
yay!
RogueJedi86 @ Jan 24th 2008 2:54PM
For ICO fans, a chain is a lot. Our old pal Ico from ICO was always swinging on chains. A minimal tease, but maybe we'll see Team ICO's next game at TGS, since they're giving out some meager screenshots and information now.
jack shaftoe @ Jan 24th 2008 2:57PM
I love all of their work.
That said, the chain kinda reminds me of Silent Hill...
Princess Skittles @ Jan 24th 2008 2:59PM
What is it with the mundane things that PS3 fans get so hot and bothered over? Mud, sweat and a now chain.. it's.. creepy. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Ico and Shadow of the Colossus (to a lesser extent) and I'll be grabbing this day one but a single screenshot of nothing is hardly that enticing.. other than the confirmation that they're working on their next game.
Ranus Studios @ Jan 24th 2008 3:06PM
Not to defend some of the more aggravating fanboys out there, but that's an awfully generalizing yet overly specific statement. I say this because it's not just PS3 fans, but fans of anything in general. The first time a screenshot of ANYTHING comes out, people get excited. Or pissed.
Think about the Transformers movie, here.
a.j. @ Jan 24th 2008 3:12PM
what is it about people being stoked about something that bothers people so much? god forbid anyone is happy about something you don't find exciting. and then you go on to say how you're buying it "day one"...lol. good post.
ComicShaman @ Jan 24th 2008 3:43PM
Think of it like an announcement that your favorite author is working on a new novel. Maybe the press release is useless for saying what the book is about -- perhaps it just says the book will definitely contain verbs. Doesn't matter. The fact that they're working on it and making progress is a good thing.
xFenixKnightx @ Jan 24th 2008 3:12PM
Ico & Shadow of The Colossus...
Man these games were SO awesome that nobody bought them!!!!
I keed I keed, I actually liked ICO but never played SotC
ViagraFiend @ Jan 24th 2008 3:18PM
You should get it if you have a system that plays it. SotC was truly artistic.
GRANTED @ Jan 24th 2008 3:32PM
i have shadow of the colossus. if i ever have kids i want them to play it, even though by that time there will probably be games built not of polygons, but of virtual molecules. and will require a holodeck to play them. and if you get caught in GTA 9, the cops actually arrest you. realism ftl.
Mike-453 @ Jan 24th 2008 3:41PM
Eh? You don;t need to buy the game to appreciate it's artistic quality. Just watch youtube vids.
You would buy SotC to climb HUGE enemies and strike their oil patches for MASSIVE damage!
Noshino @ Jan 24th 2008 4:16PM
Fenix,
You really need to play SotC, its the first game that has ever made me say "HOLY SHIT", seriously, throughtout the whole game, you can feel that the gaame is epic (and seriously, the soundtrack helped a lot, I freaking fell in love with that soundtrack)
xFenixKnightx @ Jan 24th 2008 4:31PM
Then I must play it...
I just saw the review on Gametrailers.com and they did a great job of making me want to play it.
*Dusts off the PS2*
baby sea tuna @ Jan 24th 2008 3:35PM
If this game involves a horse, I can only hope they throw out the control scheme from SotC and look towards Zelda, Gun, and (most importantly) Assassin's Creed to firm up the handling. The horse-riding mechanics was pretty much the only problem I had with the brilliance that was Shadow of the Colossus.
Neptune @ Jan 24th 2008 3:49PM
I agree. The horseriding had somewhat realistic(?) feel to it, but it wasn't enjoyable to me.
Toasty @ Jan 24th 2008 4:45PM
Actually, I've had the opposite problem. After playing SotC, it feels weird and dumb to hold forward to make the horse go forward. I prefer the SotC scheme, even if Agro disobeys once in a while.
Jon @ Jan 25th 2008 3:24AM
Agree with Toasty. The way Agro handles is great. It shows that Agro isn't someone the player controls directly, but has sort of a mind of its own too.
KushielsScion007 @ Jan 24th 2008 3:35PM
Umm why are the sony fanboys stroking themselves to a long piece of rope?
Like its one thing to see Master Chief's helmet or Kratos killing someone...
Just weird. But then again there are no games for the system so I guess any lil thing will cause excitement for you guys.
Ranus Studios @ Jan 24th 2008 3:50PM
I am in awe that I keep finding myself defending people from overgeneralized statements in this post.
This isn't a fanboy issue. If this were a fanboy thing, then people would be yelling about how this will finally kill the 360, or some such nonsense. What's going on here is that people are excited for a new product from one of their favorite teams. It's no different than people getting excited because there's a new Batman movie, or because it's a new Christopher Nolan movie.
So far the only fanboy I've seen in this thread is you, because you've pointed out how the PS3 "has no games." As an owner of all three new-gen systems, I concur that the PS3 is short-staffed in the area of quality exclusives, but jeebus man, that's a bit much.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 24th 2008 3:54PM
Good call. I remember shitting my pants when they announced Dark Knight and all they did was show the damn bat graphic!
Geist @ Jan 25th 2008 3:18AM
Ah, a member of the "hur hur I like blood and guns" gamer group. Way to stupid things down for everyone else.
People are enjoying this picture because of what it represents, not because of what it is. Go play Halo and pwn some n00bs or whatever you people do.
Neil @ Jan 24th 2008 3:50PM
I don't even care what they come out with, I'll but it without reading one review. I LOVED both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. TeamIco is one of the game developers that truly makes art and not just games.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 24th 2008 3:59PM
Why would they waste their time with such an inferior system?
Oh thats right loads and loads of Sony money right?
By the time these games come out for the PS3...the systems early troubles will be a thing of the past and even the most anti Sony nutt out there will be playing (or wishing they were playing) these games.
Ibere @ Jan 24th 2008 4:24PM
Kay, for a Sony fanboy you are pretty misinformed. TeamIco is "wasting their time" with PS3 because, well... they are Sony exmployees. This is a first-party game.
Anyway, I never imagine I could be so excited about a screenshot of a chain. I loved Ico and SotC... if they did such an incredible job with the PS2, just imagine what they'll be able to do with the PS3. It seems like they will finally launch a game that will make me by a PS3.
Mr Khan @ Jan 24th 2008 4:28PM
I think you missed his sarcasm, although you can never be sure
Mr Khan @ Jan 24th 2008 4:28PM
They have my attention so far.
I hope its more like Ico than Shadow though. Shadow was epic, but Ico was definitely more unique. This generation is in more need of Ico than SotC
Hirsbrunner @ Jan 24th 2008 4:32PM
Hooh! Aahh!
Hooh! Aahh!
That's the sound of the men working on the chain...Ga-a-ame! Well don't you know!
ALH @ Jan 24th 2008 4:52PM
DONT YOU TEMPT ME TEAM ICO, DONT YOU TEMPT ME.
Seriously though, those guys can do no wrong, its gonna suck not being able to experience their new game. Maybes i'll make friends with a ps3 owner before then...
LaughingTarget @ Jan 24th 2008 4:52PM
The objective: To pull the chain up to the top.
The problem: An irritating girl with OCD wanders around playing with everything that moves. The things that move want to eat her. Giant monsters with epic battles.
The issue: What you're pulling up, combined with the girl, gets you out of the room, but when you let go, the chain falls again.
Further problem: The room is going to explode in 4 hours and if you let the chain drop all the way down, the object breaks.
You know, this could work out as a Saw-inspired video game.
theCardinal @ Jan 24th 2008 5:22PM
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY TO SEE A CHAIN.
Vampt Vo @ Jan 24th 2008 5:42PM
Wait, didn't 2K already do a game about The Great Chain?
Ranus Studios @ Jan 24th 2008 6:09PM
I see what you did there.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 24th 2008 7:46PM
Based on that chain, I'd buy a PS3 JUST for a Team ICO game.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Jan 24th 2008 10:29PM
Sounds good, SOTC sounds like a good game to follow up, or Ico for that matter, alternatively, work on something brand spanking new to twist our heads.
