Gizmondo refuses to stay dead

Though "it will be a while" before the handheld system returns in some form, Plextek technical director Ian Murphy insists that "the product has been recovered from the liquidators and [Plextek is] bringing it back to market." Former Gizmondo exec and Ferrari killer Stefan Eriksson won't be along for the ride this time, but company founder Carl Freer is reportedly on board. He was recently quoted by a Swedish journalist as saying, "I'm going to resurrect Gizmondo." In the same interview, Freer saw the device's second coming happening as soon as May 2008.
Perhaps consumer applause will be a bit more rapturous this time.

Plextek? Sounds like one of those "Evil company that will destroy everything" from a Disney movie, or something.
wootman @ Jan 24th 2008 4:46PM
meh, looks like its going to try and be a gp2x clone, but remove everything that makes it awesome.

Cheap, open-source, emulation? Yes please.
Now to see if it actually delivers. I'm not holding my breath yet.

Too late pal,too late.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 24th 2008 7:49PM
I wish them the best of luck: would they opt for an innovative responsive control scheme (a la DS?) or for high power, graphics and features (a la PSP)?
Because I might actually be tempted for open-source development.
jesus_bon_jovi @ Jan 24th 2008 8:03PM
Does this mean there is still hope for unique titles such as "Momma Can I Mow The Lawn?"
ManekiNeko @ Jan 24th 2008 8:21PM
I'm all excited about the system being brought back from the dead, as I'm one of the few and not so proud individuals who actually owns one. However, knowing my luck, they'll bring out an entirely new machine that's incompatible with mine, making it even MORE worthless. Damn you, Freer!! (shakes fist impotently)

i only clicked on this article to ask if anyone on here actually owns one of these or knows someone who does but you seemed to have answered my question already. i have never even seen one in person, let alone have a chance to buy one. where did you even get the thing from?
Rob Accomando @ Jan 24th 2008 8:26PM
Oooooh! Can't wait to buy this and the new N-Gage! Time to retire the DS and PSP
wootman @ Jan 24th 2008 8:55PM
blah, it lacks the support of the gp2x and the power of the soon to be resealed pandora.
not knowing what "pyscic worlds" is, at the best this will be a cheap easy to delevop for hand held, which could prove success full. (for kids at least)
joenz @ Jan 24th 2008 10:08PM
At least the N-Gage had a phone to go with the crappy games (I'm of course referring to the second generation, the 'taco' is not a real phone imo), this guy had better be bringing a host of extras to rival the iPodTouch if they hope to draw even the most minute of interest to a population already embroiled with MUCH larger companies with proven experience in the game market. Sony had to kick it up a notch to introduce the original Playstation by making it a powerhouse of CD-ROM bliss, the Xbox proved to the world that Multi-player could be done online, etc. So I guess my question to the dedicated Gizmodo crew is: What's making you worth my while? Sprites? Really, how original. Obviously there is not a whole lot of information as of right now on the product itself, but unless the graphics match the DS and the extras make my Skype'd up PSP look dated, then I don't really see a need for purchase. So I wait patiently for the WOW.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Jan 24th 2008 10:30PM
The game in the pic I have not played in yonks :O
TomCo @ Jan 24th 2008 10:30PM
Hey look its Altered Beast!
That game was quite unintentionally humorous and homoerotic.
Deprincer @ Jan 25th 2008 3:09AM
