Joystiq hands-on: Rez HD

Rez HD surrounded me in a coordinated, sensory bombardment. The controller in my hand shook and bobbed with the beats while controllers under my feet and on my back vibrated a counter-tempo pattern. 5.1 surround-sound flew from all directions, and the neon-sharp HD game-world pulled me into its reality.
In my brief time with Rez HD, I decided that it wasn't a game as much as an experience. There's a game inside somewhere, but the title feels like a journey, rewarding meandering through levels instead of racing to the end. And even though it's a linear shooter, Rez HD hides a lot of exploration; I look forward to moving slowly through the game after its January 30 release.

Rez HD is a re-release of Sega's original Dreamcast and PS2 Rez. It includes the same levels and audio-driven gameplay as before. But the sounds have been remastered into a 5.1 field, and the graphics take advantage of the Xbox 360's HD power.
Tetsuya Mizuguchi explained that Sega still owns the rights to the 2001 game he helped create. However, Sega is on good terms with his current company, Q Entertainment, granting the license for the XBLA re-make.
I missed out on the original, since I waited until it was scarce before trying to buy it. Mizuguchi hopes that the digital distribution will give gamers like me a second chance. He also thinks that the demo download will introduce the experience to new players better than a retail box.
I was initially concerned that the controls were too simple. I tapped A to lock on, then I hit it again to fire. I could hold A to charge up a more powerful shot, and B launched a limited arsenal of missiles.
But even in my ten-minute play-through of the first level, the streamlined controls -- and adjustable difficulty -- began to make sense in the context of the whole experience. Rez HD doesn't have to be a tense shooter. I was content to experiment and take my time. I followed the game beat, peppering sound effects with my shot patterns. Brightly etched graphics drew me closer, while vibrating controllers rumbled against my back and feet. And even though I felt like more of a dork than usual, the vibration actually added to the experience.
Q Entertainment wouldn't officially comment on the 800 Microsoft Point ($10) game's release date, but reconfirmed that it's still coming in January. (And yes, there's only one XBLA Wednesday left in the month, on January 30. So expect Rez HD next week.) Q Entertainment hasn't ruled out Rez HD for other platforms -- especially PSN -- but has no current plans either. I look forward to trying it out again soon, at an even slower pace.

So... did no one play this on the Dreamcast or PS2? Was only 6 years ago. It seems so disingenuous to gush about a game that few cared about when it originally came out. Thank God for Live Arcade, I guess.
Anticrawl @ Jan 24th 2008 5:19AM
Eh I liked it, only bought it because I was a fan of on the rails shooters. Though I'm worried the only reason I originally loved it was because that was during a whole experimentation phase I had. And no not experimentation of vibrators perverts.
In any case I think the wild popularity it has gained is due to the gamergirladvance blog post about how the vibrator attachment was clearly sexual and her own story of using it as a sex toy, complete with pictures. Great way to get hits for your site. I'm sure 90 percent of the people who like the game or want the game have ever played it.
ClarkyCat @ Jan 24th 2008 7:40AM
I agree, the same thing's happening with vib ribbon, that game got little or no attention (or even a US release, but people who wanted it could import I suppose). I happen to have both games and being the horrible, selfish elitist that I am, I'd rather they weren't re-released to reward early adopters like me and punish the heathens that didn't make the effort the first time around. But that's just me.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 24th 2008 8:56AM
I've never played it, I don't import, and I've been hearing about this for years (which is how long it's been OoP). Plus, now it's in HD and 5.1. How can this be anything but good news?
Mighty Healthy @ Jan 24th 2008 9:53AM
I played it on both, and there was plenty of word of mouth/internet buzz then.
It's just been long forgotten, until they decided to bring this ultimate version out and reshine the spotlight on a fantastic experience.
I'd also like to agree with Anticrawl's reservations about playing this game sober. As a former psychonaut, I gotta say I know it'll be different. Maybe even better.
That Fuzzy Bastard @ Jan 24th 2008 3:16PM
I played it on the Dreamcast (thanks to the DC's spotty copy protection), and loved every minute of it. It's a simple shooter, but plenty of fun if you're a fan of the on-rails genre. This review seems not to have hit the massive difficulty spike in level three, and lucky him---it gets *hard*!
But of course, it's not all about the shooting, it's about the experience, and here, Rez gets high marks. It's definitely the most successful of Mizuguchi's attempts to build a rave-in-a-box, and I've never played such an immersive and fun music game. Believe me, it's going to be 800 points well spent if you've got any taste at all for awesomeness.
outforprophets @ Jan 24th 2008 5:08AM
I. Can't. Wait.
I've only had the pleasure of renting it from Gamefly about 4 years ago but now I finally get to own it.
GreyFox @ Jan 24th 2008 5:32AM
I've been aching for months man. I only got my hands on this at a friends place, who rented it like you, and I've never forgotten how awesome it was.
bigsofty @ Jan 24th 2008 6:45AM
REZ...Zzzzz! This should never have gotten past its PC demo roots... Zzzz.... what a shit game...
Gavin @ Jan 24th 2008 7:00AM
I can't wait to get this and play it while under the infulence of certain substances which will remain nameless.
StrangeBum @ Jan 24th 2008 8:37AM
tetrahyrdocannabinol?
dextromethorphan?
diphenhydramine?
dimenhydrinate?
methylenedioxymethamphetamine?
lysergic acid diehtylamide?
I'm done guessing?
Jcarpio @ Jan 24th 2008 8:57AM
you do know that you never catch the dragon, right? ;)
KiraXD @ Jan 24th 2008 2:55PM
ahhh gavin... the memories you induced... i originally bought rez for the ps2 for the same exact reason (and the fact that i used to be a raver.... and the conception of rez started when Mizuguchi-san was actually at a rave)
Gapati @ Jan 24th 2008 8:38AM
Good lord, Zack...you wrote all that when "Yeah, it's just like panzer dragoon." is all you needed?
Greyseal @ Jan 24th 2008 9:13AM
The game is only getting "lots of attention" from the perspective of people frequenting sites like this. Believe it or not, regular Joystiq visitors are a ridiculously tiny portion of the population.
The rest of the gaming world has assuredly zero clue that this extraordinary game is being re-released, and will shuffle unknowingly past it as they head off to pick up whatever well-licensed crap is on the shelf this week.
Superstar90 @ Jan 24th 2008 9:13AM
Is there a demo out now? I have never played this game before.
Paul @ Jan 24th 2008 9:56AM
how could there be a demo out? xbla has never released a demo of an arcade game before the actual full game.....they release them both at the same time.....
LiK @ Jan 24th 2008 9:15AM
omg, i'm so jealous you platyed it already. only 1 week to go! woo~
nindustrial @ Jan 24th 2008 9:48AM
Oh man; this game is awesome, and yes, even better on substance D. My PS2 finally bit the dirt a while ago so my lonely copy of Rez will have to get used to the idea of a digital copy invading its turf.
It is indeed more of an experience than a game.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 24th 2008 9:59AM
Who here plays the game for the ability to shoot stuff?
As in NOT because it rumbles multiple controllers like that vibrator controller.
Ashraam @ Jan 24th 2008 10:36AM
I've always figured that this must be one of those games you have to play in order to "get it." Having never played it, well... I just don't get it.
So it's just an on-rails shooter with funky graphics or what? I never could buy into the hype the first time, so I guess I'll have to try out the trial version.
Aaron @ Jan 24th 2008 10:42AM
It's a great game... remember playing it on my Dreamcast.
Cheese Muffin @ Jan 24th 2008 10:58AM
I can't be the only the only who doesn't believe that he stuck the extra controllers on his feet and back... I mean c'mon, I'm sure we've all have at least thought about sticking them in more interesting situations.
Look what happens to cell phones.
Lunatone @ Jan 24th 2008 11:04AM
Just remember, don't play it like a game, play it like an experience. Don't try to look for a story line, play it for the general atmosphere. This game is meant to be played as an art form, not an epic game of the masses.
John M. @ Jan 24th 2008 12:31PM
I've been waiting to play this for years. Since I first heard about it back when the Dreamcast was the next big thing, but could never find it. Though I did find it once for the PS2 Gamestop wanted $40 for a used PS2 copy and I just couldn't bite the bullet. I don't see how you can go wrong seeing how the price point is extremely reasonable and there will be a demo for anyone who just wants to see what the fuss is about. Hopefully other companies will follow suit and re-release unique games on XBL to gain a wider audience with the added benefit that development costs would be marginal compared to full scale retail games.
pellucidity @ Jan 24th 2008 12:36PM
I emailed the Japanese Q Entertainment site when they announced this, asking for it on PSN.
Thank for asking them about it, Joystiq - the PS2 version plays fine for me, but I would buy it in a heartbeat. I can't believe how cheap it is, either.
I hope the non-denial is code for "We're working on it" and that the bring Rez over before EEEE - I have a feeling the former will sell better.
Daveyvee @ Jan 24th 2008 3:39PM
@ StrangeBum
methylenedioxymethamphetamine?
Couple of pills with every d/l please Microsoft!
It works, and that was playing it on a crappy tv. Can't wait to play it again in HD with a "cheeky half". God I love Rez...
umm....hello??? @ Jan 24th 2008 4:32PM
put it on a retail disc or make it DRM free and I'll get it...but screw XBLA's DRM tactics.
lightswitchsam @ Jan 24th 2008 10:53PM
"I was initially concerned that the controls were too simple. I tapped A to lock on, then I hit it again to fire. I could hold A to charge up a more powerful shot, and B launched a limited arsenal of missiles."
that's...not how the controls work. you hold down X to lock on and release to fire, that's it.
snsr @ Jan 25th 2008 2:45AM
I'm mildly anticipating this game, but Lumines was a f**king RIP OFF.. nickel and dimed to death with that title.
Mike B @ Jan 25th 2008 11:29AM
The key to this game is turning up the sound REALLY LOUD!!!!!
And the lights down REALLY LOW!!!!
With that set, you can have a mildly perception-altering experience without the use of dangerous class 3 substances.
