At this point I don't think the Wii "craze" is ever going to subside. It's basically selling to everyone. It's become the McDonalds of gaming for the casual market and it the second console for many hardcore gamers. I even bought a Wii and I don't actually like it that much. But it was cheap and I picked it up at launch hoping for something different than the GC.

You're crazy to think that in 2008 the Wii fad will die off. You do know that Smash Bros and Mario Kart are coming out this year, right?

Remember Wii fans, on Feb 17, 2009, analog TVs go bye bye. Better get those converter boxes now! Not implying anything, just sayin'.

And ask anyone who's had a Wii longer than 2 months what they're playing now. What will they say?

Their 360.

Uh, Fanboy, I think you meant to say "Wii Fit" not Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Remember, at least 4 of those 10 million Wiis are owned by old ladies and little kids.

Wow, analog TVs are not going to just up and vanish. The converter boxes are for digital signals (plus, that bill has been delayed numerous times, I remember it supposedly going into effect 4 years ago at one point) to play on televisions that don't have digital input capabilities.

Plus, guess what, HDTVs play Wiis right now AND digital signals. Surprise surprise, someone doesn't understand what the digital signal in the US means.

You realize the majority of Americans aren't even going to notice the Digital switchover, right?

Cable and Satellite aren't affected at all, which means most of us will keep on truckin' with our 480i Coax-only (not even Composite) sets

Granted, at our house we have 2 HDTV's, one with an ATSC tuner, the other with PC inputs, but 2 years ago, Coax was our limit...

Interesting, I still only know one person with a PS3, and he has about half a dozen games compared to 35 or so on 360. Hmm.

And as an aside:

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=X360®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=Wii®3=All&start=38354&end=39467&weekly=1

Stretched it out a bit and made it worldwide. Not so much of a gain by that one. Also, is it just me, or does it look like the Wii has sold pretty much as many as the GC already? Crazy.

Banzai indeed.

Good chart. Has the Wii really already outsold the 360? That's insanity.

By that chart, it looks like the 360 and PS3 are selling neck and neck right now. Trying to be as impartial as I can, I think the PS3 will start to close the gap some with the games in the upcoming year - MGS4 and FF13. They're big draws, and I personally know a lot of people who are waiting for one of those to hit to make the jump from the PS2 to anything else.

I don't really care who "wins" the war, as long as both consoles keep getting great games. Maybe one day we'll all have both (or all three, five, however you count) and have nothing to argue about.

Price per console factored in, Microsoft made far more money than Nintendo did in terms of console sales $.

Time for another lesson in accounting.

Microsoft has a larger REVENUE base than Nintendo.

Nintendo has a larger PROFIT base than Microsoft.

Microsoft may get more physical cash dollars for each sale, but each sale generates a loss. Nintendo gets fewer cash dollars for each sale, but each sale generates a profit.

Revenue is pointless if the expense is higher.

False. The 360 has been making profits for over a year now on each console sold. Don't remember where the article is, but if you really need me to find it I can. As that was a whole year ago, I would imagine the profit margin is pretty substantial now (not factoring in the loss on their new return policy).

Factor that in with the amount of games sold per console (more per console than Wii and PS3 combined, almost multiplied by 2) and I don't see why people are calling the Wii the only money printer.

Won't it be an interesting next five years when we have a console dominating each market. I think with the types of games the 360 is putting out and the love of online gaming that the Americans seem to have the 360 will probably maintain its lead here.

Wii-Japan
360-North America
PS3-Europe

Of course, mentioning the Wii in this article is completely useless seeing as it's a different type of product and aimed at a different type of consumer- the non-gamer.

Or the fact that most people have accepted Wii's victory this generation as an inevitability, and the only remaining variable is PS3 v 360?

Much like last generation, the real contest this time is for 2nd place, since 1st place has clinched it (although not so severely, of course, as the PS2 did)

PS3 software is also leading in 360 and PS3 at amazon UK. I think its the same story at PLAY.com as well!

Because, Lord knows, we have to believe everything Sony says. Like this time last year, analysts said the PS3 would outsell the 360 in July. No, wait! August! ... um... September... rats.

Okay, it'll outsell the 360 in the next quarter! Yah, that's the ticket!

Utterly amazing! I am just about to sell my PS3 because there are absolutely NO games for it (and all of the cross-platform games are better on the 360). I guess Europeans really are stupid, and to think all this time I defended them.

We're not all stupid. I for one haven't bought a PS3, because the majority of the games I like the look of are already out for 360 (Orange Box, Assassin's Creed, CoD4), which I already have. Though Little Big Planet.....
Also, for my HD movie playing I got an HDDVD add-on for my 360 for Xmas. Whoops, good timing on that one!

The first ones is just Japan if anybody is interested.

This second one is world wide.

One way sony could make up lost ground is to add .mkv support to the current DivX and H264 codec support.

Seeing that I'm a 1st gen gamer (so in my 30's and with a JOB), the addition of DivX is what made me get a PS3. Plug in USB2 hard drive and off we go. I didn't mind paying the premium, as this now serves as a media centre first, gaming console 2nd. With the recent collapse of the HD DVD spec, Sony seems well poised to take the entertainment centre market, and as more exclusives come its way it will come into its own.

My opening paragraph leads me to this point: the console war might potentially be decided by not only country regions, but rather by demographic.

Here's the split:

Wii - young kids (under 10), women, the elderly
360 - male teens, tweens (20s)
PS3 - males late 20s 30s 40s + gearheads

My 2 cents. Or Xbox points or whatever.

Thanks for your time, back to regularly scheduled programming... er.. downloading.

Discuss.

El Serpiente,

To their credit, a state in the US can be larger than an entire country in Europe and travel within Europe is as easy as travel from one state to another. So really, it's not all that surprising that Europeans travel outside their home country more than the rest of the world.

You can hop on a train and pass through 3 countries in Europe in a few hours. It takes a whole day just to drive from one end of Texas to the other in the US, so a bit of perspective is in order.

(For the record I DO have a passport and travel for non-business purposes pretty frequently)

How does moving state have anything to do with Ps3 catching up to Xbox in Europe?

If your saying that Europe is insignificant, your damn out of order and need to actually visit other countries rather then sitting in one and making dumb ass comments about countries you have never been to.

This is not aimed at you El Serpiente, just prats with low intellect and high ignorance. To all those making these stupid comments, if you honestly think that by Xbox selling in America alone is anything to go by, then maybe it should only be sold there, seeing as how all the other countries are insignificant and all.

America is a wonderful country, but there are some individuals there that fit the 'stupid' wrong, but in their case true stereotype.

The 360 is pretty much tailor made to US (and UK) tastes.

I'd put money on the success of the P3 being dependent on Blueray. If blueray is successful then it'll sell a lot of PS3s, at least in the short term until the price of players drops significantly.

The main threat to blueray is actually probably video-on-demand services.

The Wii is gonna continue as an annual product, with consumers who buy games for Xmas every year.
