Video: The tech behind Star Wars: Force Unleashed
33
Question. What do you get when you mix the powerful Havoc physics engine, the Euphoria AI engine and a pinch of digital molecular matter technology? Well, in Lucas Arts' case, you get a game that goes by the name of Star Wars: Force Unleashed and its freakin' amazing gameplay.
Embedded above is a a tech demo video where you can witness how Force Unleashed masterly blends each engine, each program and each effect into one cohesive gameplay experience. It's crazy cool. It's crazy crazy. It'll make your jaw drop. Watch as glass shatters, AI grabs onto the nearest object when lifted into the air and you'll see the entire environment breaks at its seams. Just watch and be awe-struck.

SHADOW OF THE EMPIRE IS THE BEST ONE TO DATE.
This is the only one that can dismount it from it's throne.

I'll admit, that got me really pumped for this game. I'd say it's now in my top 5 anticipated titles for 2008.

Looks ok, the physics stuff looks cool but I'm not so impressed by the Euphoria "AI". It seems like there are only a couple of canned responses depending upon the scenario. How is grabbing a box that is flying away from you smart? Also bouncing a Storm Trooper off a Tie Fighter is fun, but why does it explode? That's a little silly. I think the more "realistic" games get, the more these things stand out(uncanny valley and all that)

Yes, objects do neat things. But how well does it PLAY?
Don't get me wrong, I'll still get it and attempt to break the physics engines, but I just hope the game itself is as good as the technology they're putting in it.

However this game turns out the physics behind it are groundbreaking. If these technologies get licensed out I see a pretty sweet future for games.

All I can say about this game is that Im gonna have to wait till some sites get thier hands on it and review it. I remember how cool Starwars episode 3 revenge of the sith the game was looking too. Then it came out and it sucked hard. Infact it was like a month later stores were selling it for 9.99. I hope this game rises above that and is worth montening with the names Jedi Academy and KOTAR.

I'm a little bit confused...
If I'm Darth Vader's apprentice, why am I fighting Storm Troopers? What sense does that make?
If there is one feature I'm hoping for, it's lightsaber-destructable environments. For instance, if I take a lightsaber to a blast door, it should melt through it like in the movies. I'd settle for accurate burn/amputation damage to enemies though. I'm going to be really bummed if I can't do a Darth Vader and chop a dudes hand off.

I can't be the only person wondering why all of the stormtroopers become noodles with super grip hands when they are lifted into the air, right?
Besides that though, I'm really looking forward to this.

You know, I really want to be able to say, "Eat your heart out, Bioware," with this game.
And, as great as that video was... does anyone else still feel a little iffy? I mean, gameplay wise, I'm sure Unleashed will make a pretty damn good impression on the gaming community.
But, come on folks, Star Wars is all about the badass lore. Maybe I'm just afraid that the story will be crippled by all the attention on the tech.
Summer '08 is still a long ways off. Time will tell, I suppose.
Fingers crossed.
