I really don't think that using the Wii to promote exercise for kids is that great of an idea. The Wii will not entice kids to actually go out and play sports if they were sedentary in the first place. Even if playing Wii tennis for half an hour would make a child want to play tennis, he or she would soon discover that the learning curve for real sports is a bit more difficult.

In many cases, the reason those kids are sedentary in the first place is because they don't feel they are good at sports so they don't have fun with them and don't want to play. Unless you are a complete athletic natural, most enjoyable physical activities have a difficult beginning period when the activity is more stressful than fun. Wii is not going to provide overweight kids with anything but an excuse to stay in an unhealthy comfort zone (and, as far as games go, Wii really isn't that exercise intensive, compared to other games like DDR or to "real" sports).

I do think however that the Wii is a very good source of physical activity for those who are elderly or in rehabilitation for an injury. Wii games require and surely build a range of muscular coordination and are fun but also low impact (well, unless you hit the ceiling fan with your hand during an overzealous swing). I would say put Wiis in hospitals and nursing homes long before putting them in school PE programs.
