Circuit City was so very kind to inform the populace that the cobalt blue Nintendo DS was ready to pre-order -- too bad nobody called "no take-backsies." GoNintendo reported on the pre-order for the sexy new DS, which looks like a blue version of last year's crimson model. It would appear that Circuit City jumped the gun announcing new model, as the page has now been removed.
We've contacted Nintendo for comment, though we don't expect confirmation outside of a potential, upcoming announcement.
Update: Buy.com is offering the Cobalt Blue model for pre-order.

Old news joystiq, i saw this in like, 1985 with Doc Brown. Biff had a red one and had stolen the flux capacitor, so we just had to battle our pokemanz. Biff was all like, "My pokemanz butthead, let me show you them!" At first the Doc was like, "Dont battle Marty, not with the Biffster! You could cause a paradox! Then Biff was all like, "What are you chicken?" So then I said to biff...MY POKEMANZ...LET ME SHOW YOU THEM! Biff was then pwned.

Ugh. I think the whole color on top, black on bottom scheme looks tacky. Where's my all navy-blue Lite? Didn't they have one in Japan?

I didn't like that for the red one, but it really works for this blue one, IMO.

Do new colors really make people finally get a system? Or are they supposed to appeal to nut jobs that feel compelled to buy every color?

Actually, yes. I would almost definitely sell my Wii and buy a blue one like the one they showed during the prototype phase, if it was available.

Yes and no:
* Nintendo has a habit of releasing portable consoles in "limited edition" colors. This appeals to collectors and to people who want to resell their console for a higher price later on (for reference, compare the going prices of the original black Xbox and the translucent green one).
* For a DS owner whose DS is in sad shape, and who has been been looking to replace it, the announcement of a new color can be just what it takes to give them an excuse to buy a replacement.
* I admit that I have, in the past, purchased portables in a newly-released color if it is significantly more appealing to me than the one I already owned. In that case, I usually give my old portable to someone who doesn't own one, which creates one more potential buyer for that portable's games. I doubt that Nintendo is unaware that this sort of thing happens.
At any rate, retailers never fail to advertise the availability of consoles in new colors, so there must be something to it.
