These numbers are insignificant. PC Gaming is still around and still strong. People say it is "dying" but thats been said for years. Yet, its still around. Its not going anywhere any time soon. Its just changing. The main medium now for the most part of people getting PC Games is digital downloads, which like the post says isn't even included in these numbers.

Sure the price of a new gaming rig can be an issue. Personally I got a 360 because I didn't have $900 to drop on a new top of the line computer. (TOP of line from Newegg that is). Though I could drop $400, get a 360 that can play great games, and so forth. But I still play PC Games, maybe not Crysis but some. Eventually I hope to get a computer that I wont have to worry about if I can run it at all (even low settings) or not.

PC Gaming is here, and it isn't going anywhere. It may be changing, and there are some problems and even perhaps it has slowed down a little but in no way does that mean its "dying".

I find "figures" like this humorous when WoW alone brings in a billion a year for Blizzard...

Wait wait wait.

You mean to tell me that people don't give two shits about the pc?

I am shocked.

Your comparison, i think, is flawed. That $18.85 billion accounts for both hardware and software sales of consoles, but not for any hardware sales of PC (for obvious reasons).

Software sales of just console/portables versus just software sales of the PC (a more reasonable comparison) would mean that PC accounted for around %25 of software sales.

The big problem with the PC is, yes, it costs too much.

I know I can get a bargain at NewEgg and assemble it from scratch, by why bother? Why go through the yearly upgrade of video card/memory/processor/whatever? Why should I pay for developer's laziness in optimizing code for the regular PC?

I should know, I've been playing PC and console games even before I entered elementary. And now that I'm working, I know I can afford a PC that can run Crysis...but why go through the hassle when my Xbox 360 works great with any games for it?

I'd rather have one box that can handle games from day 1 to the next gen upgrade, rather than tinker around every few months or so.

Don't believe a console can last years with great ganes? Two words: Playstation 2.

Ok, agreed. PC gaming is dead.. Now, MS will you stop releasing your 360 console games on it so you can actually have some TRUE exclusives.

Nothing lamer than buying a 360 game and then finding out 6 months later a much better version of the same game is going to be released only to flop with mediocre sales.(I'm looking at you Gears!)

I feel sorry for all those Halo gamers out there.

Just give me mouse/keyboard support on 360/PS3 games (like its really that hard), and I'm sold.

Wait... $910 million? really? I'm pretty sure I read that WoW pulls in over a billion annually in subscription revenue alone. I know that's worldwide, but still, I can't believe that WoW eclipses the entire US PC game market.

And if this report doesn't count annual subscriptions, well then it's pretty much worthless right? Thats like saying that the Yankees have no good hitting infielders other than Jeter and A-Rod.

I'd imagine direct downloads are the future. Steam, gametap, etc.. and I'd imagine Microsoft will have a DD system pretty soon.

That said, CASUAL games on the PC are a huge market.. you know, cards, minesweeper, etc.. but they aren't ever gonna show up on sales charts.

I used to be a die-hard PC gamer who laughed at console users... but now I just don't have the time or money to devote to PC gaming.

Console gaming is just much cheaper, easier and more accessible for a 10 min blast. (love steam tho..)

Er - 910.7 million isn't 14% of 18.85 billion. It's more like 5% (4.8).

My next PC is going to be a cheap-o laptop.

Not worth spending more money for more compatibility issues and games that outclass your rig within the year.

Also: Captain Hook Sparrow D. Luffy Karnage loves the PC. Wonder why?

Seriously now Jostiq, this is getting really annoying. You royally ignore this kind of articles : http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/npd-pc-sales-decline-not-worrying/19192/?biz=1
but every little bit of news in the "PC gaming is almost dead now, it's TRUE!!!" category gets a post (even though in this case you're just trying hard to make good news look bad : 14% in the US without digital distribution is good, no matter how you spin it).

How is 14% bad?

14% seems good to me when you have PS3, X360, Nintendo Wii etc.

I don't know, how is it a bad thing?

14% of the market share - hardly ever any ads made for "PC" as a console. Compare that to 86% shared by Xbox360, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, DS and so on. Granted that the movement of cash isn't the same for each console - average it out and its about the same across the board.

I play games on the PC because its convenient - I don't upgrade every 3 months, I can't. But it plays games just fine - my Wii is gathering dust next to the TV, I've not touched it for months and my other console is the PSP which I use in between class time when I'm at school. So yeah, I think PC as a gaming platform will continue dying for ages.

Concerning the PC vs. console argument... WTF? You can't prove that one is superior because it's truly a matter of perspective.

Some people like (and need) the pinpoint accuracy you can get with a keyboard and mouse in order to be the best. While some people really don't care and are satisfied with analog sticks. Some like to spend money on achieving the ultimate PC gaming rig. While some would rather achieve the ultimate home theater system.

It's true, you can adapt one setup to emulate the other (i.e. big screen PC with a comfy chair or mouse/keyboard on PS3/360) but you can't ignore that consoles were designed for the living room while PCs were designed for the desk and because of this, they each have advantages over the other. Try playing DDR or Rock Band on your PC with 3 other people in one room. Then try holding an RTS LAN party with 8 360s. Both situations are definately doable with the right setups, but obviously not what they're designed for (which can be half the fun if you're a geek like me).

A lot of this PC vs. console crap is just stupid... especially to the majority of us who enjoy both. In the end, you have to remember that these are GAMES; and as such, it really comes down to one question: Are you having fun?

Is this something new? Did anyone see PC game sales rising? They just don’t seem very appealing. The only game that I ever got into for the PC was Counter Strike. I just like to play to shot some people. How many people actually play PC games often…I sure as hell never do. That’s just my opinion on it though. I don’t see PC games sales sky rocketing now, or as a matter or fact ever. A game like War Craft that attracts so many people…I never knew how people got into those games. It just seems that it is wasting time. The PC is just an alternative to playing games. The main consoles are where the focus should be. These would create the most revenues, obviously. The gaming world on the PC just seems like another world when it comes to gaming. People have their preferences and PC gaming is not one of mine.
